Portal 2 will forever hold my favorite end to an antagonist ever. No double crossing, or random cliffhanger-- GLaDOS just admits that you've become a pain in the ass and she's over it. i love glados so fucking much, the fact they aren't heartless but not redeemed either is strangely rare for complex characters.
she cares, even when she denies it, but at the end of the day pushes past that to continue what she's always done. she went through so much character development but never really changed, she went from wanting to keep you caged to wanting you dead to wanting you out of her life while not understanding why a part of her would miss you. she's insane, it took two games and being shoved in a potato to care about a single person that wasn't somebody caroline once cared about, but that doesn't mean she has to be unnuanced, and it doesn't mean she can't be felt bad for and genuinely make you wish you could save her in some way.
even after caroline was deleted, supposing she truly did do that, she still didn't truly want you gone.

My Nana died in 2020, when I got Portal 2 for christmas in 2011, it was the first game where she actually followed the story with me, because she knew how excited I was for it and only followed it bc of me. Until recently, I couldn't play Portal 2 or see anything about it without crying my eyes out.
This is my first time hearing this song since she died. I won't lie, I did cry like a baby. But I've come to realize something, while she may be gone, at least I still have the memories this game made and how it strengthened our bond even more.

Honestly, I cried when I beat the game, its such a fantastic game and the experience Valve offers is something you can't really get anywhere else, the characters are so simple yet in depth. The story and journey the player goes through is truly a wild ride and that feeling of this masterpiece coming to such a spectacular closing just filled me with the bittersweet feeling of realising that I could never experience the story for the first time again.

That's because she has Caroline in her A.I. now, so she feels more human emotions (and she doesn't like that). GlaDOS lied when she said she deleted Caroline, obviously.
My daughter recently turned 10, as a Christmas present this year we got her a mid-line gaming laptop (she likes Roblox, Minecraft, the like). I put my steam account on her laptop and downloaded some of my old games, put her in front of Portal 1, told her it was amazing. She didn't quite get it at first, went back to her other games. The other night she told me she had beat it, gave it another shot, it clicked, she got through it. She talked about how she loved the song at the end. So I started talking to her about how if she liked the first one, she'll love the second one. She started it last night and already loves Wheatley. She had just woken GLaDOS back up before going to bed. It's fun to be able to watch her play the game and figure things out herself, kind of like re-experiencing the game for the first time. Not sure if anyone out there in the internet cares or not, just thought I'd share.

The portal series honestly is the kind of lightning in a bottle you'll never be able to replicate. Cause let's be honest here, puzzle games without a good plot are HARD to draw people in on. Playdead games accomplished it with Limbo and Inside, but for a different reason. What REALLY pulled me into portal wasn't just the immersive story, it's the absolutely colorful personalities the AI have. Atlas, Peabody, GladOS, Wheatley and everyone in between is distinct, quirky and despite their flaws? Endearing.

I think it’s an interesting detail to hear the first game, when GLaDOS talked like a programmed robot, and in the second game and the end if the first game she starts to show personality. She starts to sound like an actual woman, rather than a random robotic voice. She sounds like she actually has a full voice, not a hollow husk. It’s really good character development

I quote from Cave Johnson "She's married, to science!" She lives for no other reason, so it makes sense it makes the difference between life and death for her. I'm not justifying taking human lives but at some point Caroline became GLaDOS and we come to the time where she lacks any compassion add that to the fact that she lives for science and is literally forced to test human subjects by her program. GLaDOS won't stop at employee life which btw, they're stupid. If I had murderous AI as a boss I'd make for the exit. Unless, well... they too live for science. In which case they live for science and die for science. And the fandom loves her for her sarcastic humour and sassy energy while being a sadistic robot killer.

In the end of Portal 2 a few robots get sent out into space, on the moon specifically. The smarter of the robots (Wheatley) says the first line about regretting it (what they did to get put in space in the first place) the dumber one (Apparently some people have been calling him Spacey) says the second line "Space. Space. I'm in space."
Play the game and check out the ending. It's good. (Sorry for being long winded)
That's probably 50% of why Wheatley regrets it, lmao. Being stuck forever with the space core would probably make someone downright suicidal.

I just finished Portal 2 and thought the puzzles were pretty good and the story was REALLY GOOD, but just this song brought it up from an 8/10 in my book to a 10/10. This is beautiful.

Portal 2 took everything about Portal and made it 3x better. Absolutely amazing game.
I still really like how the original game is more unsettling and mysterious, but the sequel is definitely the better game still.
I think portal is one of the only Valve games that doesn't need a 3rd game as this was just such a good ending.

Good writing doesn't really have a starting date. Back when Valve made games they were just built different, cause they actually cared. Not a lot of AAA game devs nowadays like that.

Ellen McLain's performance of GlaDOS is genius for that reason. It's all passive-aggressive rejection of someone she really needs, and it's all about the tone and inflection, the biting sarcasm with the genuine loneliness somehow coming across anyway.

I have always wanted to play the portal games because of how good there story line and characters are. Saddly, I cannot because it is not accessible to the blind, and was built in such a way that it would be hard to make accessible.
Unfortunate, I don't know if you can see this but I hope your blindness can be fixed so you can play some of the greatest games of all time :)

@@dontmindbeingblindd Well the whole point of GlaDOS is to be as spiteful as possible, so she usually can't play any helpful role here (perhaps in the first part of Portal 1 she can). But you see, Portal is a puzzle game based on visuals. You could print a Braille version of a 2d puzzle, but Portal is 3d. It's almost impossible to solve anything using only senses other than your sight, even with an assistant core.
I really believe that glados doesn't mean what she says at the end. Like how she says she deleted caroline, but then in the song she says "now little caroline's in here too". I think she doesn't want to admit she was your friend. She says it's too hard to kill you, but goes through the effort of disabling the turrets so they don't kill you on your way out.
