God, I love the sound of the old DOS TIE Fighter game, You have no idea how much I still think "I'll just go back and play TIE Fighter and X Wing Alliance, Again... Even if I don't have anything to make a video about for it".
The vr is worth it. The vr controllers don't work, but anyone who plays vr flight sims don't use the vr controlled options. They use a flight stick and keyboard. Squadrons works very well with a cheap Logitech flight stic, actually. You still need to use the keyboard for the menus, but most of the flight controls can be mapped to the flight stick, which makes controlling much easier. Unlike flight sims like dcs which require telepathy to use in vr. It also adds a slight advantage when you get practised with it that compensates for the lack of visual awareness with the controller, and the cockpits are really cool in vr. Pick up a used quest 2 or something.

I just started getting back into Squadrons and let me tell you. Flying these Star fighters in VR is so much fun. There’s no option to up the FOV in each eye (makes sense but it’s still a bit inconvenient) so you’re having to constantly move your head away from the front to check radar, see the power distribution, or check your cooldowns. However, I personally don’t think this game’s VR experience is worth getting a brand new vr setup just for it. Great video!
Right there with 'ya. It seems like most VR games still have some quirks they're working out... but playing this game in VR was crazy fun!
Yeah it's alright.
I follow community channels to more easily get multiplayer games in Squadrons, including fleet battles.
That's a good idea. Maybe that's how I got lucky with my one and only que.
Bruh. Thanks for this. I also came from X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter. This very much looks like that old goodness with new paint. It's on sale, I'mma grab it thanks to your explanation.
Fingers crossed it works on your system! If it works it's totally worth it, I think!
I played through the whole campaign in VR, it was great. I used a flight stick
I wish I had the flight stick when I tried out VR at my brothers... but sadly he only had an xbox controller, so I felt like I was playing with half my brain since I hadn't played with a controller... wasn't my finest flying, I'll confess.
This game needed a better story with dialogues and some choices with different outcomes.
It needed a free walk mode to let you walk around ships and different areas of the base.
Even a bar to hang out with your squadron members.
What put me off:
The constant change of sides in story mode.
I wanted to play as an X-Wing pilot.
I wanted to master the X-Wing and get into the fight (PvE or co-op) with the best knowledgeof my ship.
I didn't want to learn how to fly imperial ships.
At least not together.
The key binding and functionality of significant things in flight was tiresome and frustrating.
Power allocation is an interesting mechanic in these games but it turns up being overused and become the main focus of the player that needs to be a master piano player to manage his fingers to constantly push buttons for 80% of the fight.
The game could be awesome with a few different development choices that affect the overall gameplay.
That's fair.
I would have preferred to influence the outcome too... but some games you just follow a story and I'm fine with what I got (but I agree influencing the story would definitely be more compelling and give a reason to replay!).
And I can understand disliking the constant story switching, the rebles were more interesting then the empire (and yet, they should have leaned into the betrayal more to make the imperials more interesting and vengeful... it could have been so much more).
I think it's just one of those "we're lucky we got anything like it to begin with." But totally fair criticisms. Thanks for the comment!
I finally started playing this on psvr1 2 nights ago. I really like it, looks great in V.R.
i also bought a used psvr1 a few weeks ago after having played it flat. its a transforming experience, almost like a new game and how it was meant be played. made me a vr believer and ordered psvr2 soon after. but still play squads campaign regularly…
I was visiting my brothers and tried it out in VR since I made this video, it's so cool to play in VR!
Well, not talking about how well the VR in Squadrons scales against other VR simulations, but once I started to play in VR, it really feels a huge downgrade to play it without VR. Flight simulators is really where the VR shines
See, that's kinda what I always expected from VR! Just leaning the scale towards getting a VR headset. haha
Yeah, Squadrons VR is the best thing that ever happened. I play on PlayStation, using the PS VR1 on PS5 with the visual upgrade. It's just too much fun in VR. The first time you buzz a Star Destroyer's deck in an X-Wing..., oh wow.
@@13lakeThat sounds epic.
@atratzu, yes you really need to play in vr. its a whole new level…
Its a shame squadrons didn't catch on more. It was pretty surprising when it came out that EA would put out a $40 game with such a big ip. It didn't get too many updates, but it was pretty cool when they dropped the defender and b-wing a few months after launch. I'm not much for flight sims, but squadrons was pretty fun for what it was
It really is a shame. This game had so much more potential in it. I just hope we might get something like it again in the future...
They keep remastering star wars games, so maybe I'll get my TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance remastered before I die of old age.
The flying feels good but I couldn't get into it because of the story and mission structure. I wish they would just give you missions to do and let you carry it out with however you want but the game insist on handholding you and having these meh characters. I got it for 2 bucks and I still felt like it wasn't worth it. I wish there were also areas that just weren't "space". Maybe take places on a planet? I also wish you could play 3rd person too.
So is this going to gtet support for VR? This would be awesome in a Quest 2.
What do you mean? It already has VR support, the game was designed with that in mind for many of the features in the game.
Dunno if it's only supporting steam VR or if any VR headset can work... I haven't tinkered with it, just played in while visiting my brother.
@@Atratzu so the reason I can't play this on my meta quest is... it just doesn't work?
Gunny is a species from South America in the southern hemisphere.
No comment. xD
my only issue with this game is that the craft feel a bit... light? and drifting kinda feels weird.
Confession: I still haven't gotten used to the drifting mechanic. I just half power turn like I learned from TIE Fighter. haha
Bought it on release to play in VR and it was unplayable
That's a pity. did they fix it eventually? Because the VR did work for my brother.
@@Atratzu they have claimed to have fixed it several times. I gave up on checking. Haven’t been in vr in a year or so now.
@@hkravchI bought & downloaded the game from EA and play it on VR. Works great! My hardware is nothing special; Quest 3 with wired link, i7 CPU, 4060 GPU using a HOTAS 4 for control. The immersion really is amazing! Tie fighters are IMHO claustrophobic, but the ‘look-around’ cockpit of an X-Wing is magnificent in VR.
It is very sad that EA's past got in the way of Squadrons' longevity. Coming off the last Star Wars multiplayer game launch being p2w and a complete PR disaster, they refused to have any form of monetization past buying the game itself. Then they cut the game's support almost immediately after launch because of its lack of revenue past launch, due to a problem that was... their fault. Squadrons is another failure for EA, albeit a quieter failure that was well received and sold far beyond expectations. As somebody who played the game an *intense* amount, it is glaringly obvious the potential this game had, and the actions EA took that lead up to the destruction of that potential.
Just finished the campaign. mediocre game compared to the old star wars flight sims like X-wing: Alliance.
Well yeah, but that's to be expected. What can hold up to the classic Star Wars Flight Sims? There was way more magic in video games back then. haha
Thanks for the honest take. I've played that game a few dozen hours in VR when it released. Too bad it got shipped with Denuvo and that tanked performance and made it harder to mod it with FSR upscalers.
There's also an upgrade / VR mod for XWing Alliance I'll need to check at some point...
If there's a VR mod for X Wing Alliance I MUST find and try that out. omg.
