  • KAV, 31, was first seen in our office in 2004, when she was 11. At that point, she needed eyeglasses to help her see better. We saw her again the following year, and her prescription become worse. She was becoming progressively more nearsighted each year. When she turned 13, she began Orthokeratology. She did great and continued seeing 20/20 without getting worse. We replaced the lenses each year, but did not have to change the power or design.
She married and moved to Florida. I referred her to a colleague that prescribed Orthokeratology, who practiced close to where she lived. Several years ago, she returned to NJ. Her prescription had changed. Now, as an adult, she spent considerable time on computer, and it was less comfortable than ideal, in part because the lenses that had been prescribed in Florida, were less than ideal.
We went through a process and prescribed new ortho-k lenses for her. She now sees 20/20 with each eye and 20/15 (smaller letters than 20/20). She is now more comfortable when working on computer.
I am grateful and proud that I was able to help KAV for all of these years and that she continues to see clearly. Ortho-k has given her a "re-set" to her vision and enables her to continue seeing clearly. No surgery. No eyeglasses.
Some ask: "How young can we start Ortho-k? Can adults have Ortho-k? How long can you do Ortho-k?" We have patients as young as 4 or 5, but 6 is a normal young age to start Ortho-k. We also have patients to continue to wear their Ortho-k lenses into their 70's. Some have worn Ortho-k molding lenses for 20 or 30 years.
