In a drawing his office, there are a couple of straps with some screws and a little note that says this wine rack is unstable and should be secured to the wall.
I think it wasn't fastened properly. He probably didn't use plugs in the wall and the shelf must've hung forwards slightly. So, if you have screws that are in plaster or something similar, without extra support, and you constantly have this weight and more weight put on and taken off, so the shelf moves, your screws will start to loosen. That's what I think happened. They started to scrape away the material and eventually gave away.
I think he was smart - broken glass all over the floor and even if he was in there he wouldn’t be able to catch or grab more than one bottle at a time. If he’s insured it’s better to wait!
