    Darkest Hour is criminally under rated. One of the best metal bands out there, I just wish they'd get the recognition they deserve. Dudes have been thrashin for over 20 years now

    Kris Norris was the lead guitar on this record and he was really influenced by Dark Tranquility, At the Gates, etc. He really changed the bands sound and added all these great solos that are pretty classical metal influenced

    This song definitely hits diferently in the context of the whole album. Its the closure of 40 minute thrasher of an album, great solos, poignant yet hopeful lyrics and pummeling drums. One of my favorite albums for sure.

    Darkest Hour is such a gem. I might get some flack for this as most are more keen on their older stuff (it's damn good as you heard), but I REALLY love the stuff from their self-titled album that came out in 2014. It was the first album with Travis Orbin (the Orbinator) on the drums, and he brought a serious breath of fresh air and insane dynamic to the group. If you happen to wanna check anything out definitely give Lunar Divide, Infinite Eyes, Hypatia Rising or Surrealist a listen. Absolute banger tracks off an insane album that's most certainly worth a listen the full way through!

      @@MattJFilms yeah, what he did was to add perfect little touches in just the right spots before dropping back into the groove with the bass. I agree, his work was really nice.

    Ugh I love early DH so very much. This is also a band that I have had the pleasure to open up for many moons ago. Such an amazing group of dudes. They're music has always seemed like "melodic thrash" to me. It's not chunky enough to be hardcore and there's never breakdowns so it can't really be considered metal core either. I think they've always considered themselves a thrash band at their heart. This rings true with very early DH albums.
    Fantastic band. Going to listen to this album right now. I'm past due.

  • @paulstoliker3303

    This is early DH, & the song to me is like the cover art...brutal with sneaky beauty. Bryan, Tunguska from the same album is really pleasing to the ear.
    & you're right...the way they use the change of pace & melodicism may seem gimmicky, but for me it's more of a release. As for going back to the chorus after the buildup & layering, I like it...easy to miss on 1st listen but he's hitting NOTES, not just atonal growl.
    Not to say they couldn't have done it differently. I don't think Darkest Hour would feel like DH with clean vox...BUT if I had to I'd do it with transition to acoustic guitar after the layered bridge & very small, quiet vox like in the song "We All Go Down" by Far (check it out privately if you like...really mellow & depressing, sad song, but effective).
    As far as what you were looking for in the pitch-bearing growled vox...look no further than Gojira, The Art of Dying, during the chorus. **Of course they also add a cleanish voc. in the background.

    Cover art is very reminiscent of Baroness's album covers. DH is one of those bands I heard of when I was into melodeath/metalcore but never got around to checking them out. This track seems pretty typical of the genre, and really there just isn't enough here that distinguishes them from the multitude of other bands in the genre. I did dig the part where the lead guitar solo kicks in, but beyond that everything else sounds pretty generic to me.

      This isn't really metalcore. There isn't that much of a hardcore influence (though there is a bit but it's not the biggest influence) and there are no breakdowns. The guitars especially are very inspired by melodic death bands like Dark Tranquility and At the Gates. They're honestly closer to melodic death and thrash than to metalcore, at least this era of Darkest Hour. Also the albums with Kris Norris on guitar, of which this is one of, are great.

    • @jonathanhenderson9422
      @jonathanhenderson9422 Před 3 lety +1

      @@RikiazGaming Metalcore was hugely influenced by melodeath, especially ATG's Slaughter of the Soul, and the dividing line between them is pretty thin. To me, the key distinguishing features is that metalcore tends to have more "scream" (and clean) vocals, chugging breakdowns, and lighter/less complex guitar work. To me, this song fits the first and latter category, but not the second. Melodeath tends to have vocals leaning more towards growls, typically with more complex song structures and lead guitar work. There's tons of ways to blur these elements though, and plenty of bands fit into both genres depending on the song.
