WE MESSED UP THIS PLUMBING VALVE!!!-- Santec Thermostatic Shower Valve

  • Most of the time we use Delta, Brizo, Moen, Kohler, Hansgrohe, etc. but sometimes homeowners like to pick out their own plumbing. What can happen is they end up with an obscure brand that can be much more difficult to install. Waterworks, Newport Brass, Rohl, and Santec are a few that we have encountered that usually have bad instructions and/or bad technical support leaving us to try and figure out how to install them.
    That is what happened to us on this particular plumbing fixture and we had to come back to perform a bush fix to make it work correctly. We used a Santec thermostatic shower valve with a volume control. The rough in part number is SANTEC ESTATE TH-8212 and the finish trim part number is SANTEC ESTATE 7096BL10-TM Britani.
    I highly discourage anyone from installing these valves, due to the very tight tolerances and difficulty of installation. On top of that, I left 3 messages with technical support and never got a call back.
    Anyways, I hope you enjoy the video!

    Thanks for posting videos that are jammed pack with knowledge. I’m from Sacramento as well but live in San Diego. My parents recently purchased a home in Roseville California and both of the bathrooms need major updates. After watching your videos and others on here it’s inspired me to tackle this project on my own. Not sure if you’ll be up to it but I was thinking for your CZcams channel having a amateur, eye for design, driven to perfection, fast learner, creative and most of all ambitious to help guide. I’ve done a lot of homework on Schluter products and feel confident that this product will allow me to give them their dream bathroom they always wanted. After watching one of your video you mentioned in it that no matter the age you strongly encouraged to get into this field, and with a possible furlough around the corner from work, your words have given me that aspiration.

    Another great video, overcoming adversity. I am a plumber and understand the difficulty of working with an unfamiliar valve. I prefer delta myself, the r1000 can even come with built in wirsbo pex adapters... no soldering or threading, ready to go. My supplier told me the delta rough in would work with the higher end Brizo trim. I have yet to verify that, but I feel it’s worth looking into.

    I’m a plumber in NY. Right outside Manhattan. I just installed for the 1st time Delta’s new or newer. Shower valve & diverted combo. R2200. Is the rough kit. It looks exactly like what you were working on just more reliable, parts easy to get etc. I ALWAYS recommend the Delta Monitor series of shower bodies. Best shower body/valve on the market. I always steer my customers to stay Domestic. ie: delta, American standard, moen, Kohler I’m not a fan off at all. Especially when your talking body sprays etc. if I walk in & see a $4,000 Italian shower valve, I tell them I simply stopped working on them. Your on the phone half a day, 100 different parts, usually metric screws/set screws. And it’s gonna cost you $1,000 dollars for my time & none of the supply houses have those cartridges in stock….so it’s just better for me at least to walk away. Unless it’s a really good customer. Then I will. But most of the time your the 3rd guy that’s been there cause the other plumbers don’t take their calls. If it’s new construction, I always steer them clear of that shit. But it was funny cause the 1 I put in today looks exactly the same w/o the headaches. Nice job diagnosing tho. I’ve been a licensed plumber for 17 yrs in the biz 27 yrs. That turned into an easy fix. I’ve had some nightmares, all the 1’s that fight me are bought on line. Or from IKEA, you know the 1’s. Check it out tho. This guy just wanted a diverter for a hand held. Very easy install. I’m old school still, all copper & sweating for me. I’m feeling the pressure to make the change. Will if it’s in a basement where it’s accessible. But behind brand new expensive tile job. Copper!!!! Good job 👍

    DIY homeowner chiming in. I only ever use delta. I had an issue with a thermostatic valve (gaskets - probably installer error) and called them, they sent replacement parts no charge and I got them two days later. Their parts are readily available and there are literally hundreds of videos and how to guides online for install and troubleshooting. The same probably goes for Moen,Kohler etc.

  • @jerrygrayson8421
    @jerrygrayson8421 Před 4 lety

    Yesterday I installed a Moen shower valve and experienced no water shut off or temperature control and Moen tech support answered quickly and will send me a new valve stem but perhaps the issue was not the stem and a minor mechanical adjustment as you had with the Santec but it seems the design of stems and installation is just excessively complicated. Now my client will need to wait about 7-10 days for the Moen stem to arrive but having to grind/trim the Santec stem is unexpected but opened my eyes to how delicate these stems can be. I installed shut off valves while plumbing in the fixture and needless to say I am glad that I did this. I subscribe to your videos and to have this one appear just after I had a similar a problem is lucky for me. Thank you.

    • @mikemorrison4860
      @mikemorrison4860 Před 4 lety

      Go buy a $100 Moen Adler kit at a Big Box store. Carefully pull the cartridge out of it. Then when the cartridge from MOEN comes replace it into the valve and take it back to the store and get a refund. There's no harm in doing that as long as you do it correctly. That way you can get the job done immediately. you're supposed to pull the cartridge out completely in flush the system before you put the trim on anyway so it's not like it's an abnormal thing. And then I'm sure you already know ifthe temperature is backwards (turns on hot first instead of cold first) all you have to do is pull the handle off and rotate the stem 180 degrees. Or occasionally the rough-in is backwards and in that instance you have to pull the cartridge and flip it over upside down to make it work right.

    In the initial installation, the valve has been placed too deep in the wall. After removing the part at 9:18 (the dial), you remove a sleeve below it. This sleeve is supposed to be screwed into the brass fitting below it, but the brass fitting is too deep in the wall for the sleeve to reach it, so it is just loose in your video. If the sleeve had been screwed in tight as it is supposed to be, then the dial would make contact with the plastic temperature restrictor with no cutting necessary.

    @thehawk05 Před 3 lety

    What an overly complex valve setup. I installed a 3 way Riobel R45 thermostatic valve in our bathroom......temp and function all in one handle and the way they do their trim kits you have over 1” of tolerance for your valve location depth. They provide a hard plastic template with the valve so super easy to get your rough in depth in the correct range.

      The plumber or lack of plumber isn’t the problem here. It was either the installation (whether the technique or the instructions), or a design flaw. 12 years ago we remodeled our bathroom with a who knows who shower valve and it never worked that well. We instantly had diverted valve issues. We are not remodeling that bathroom and this time we got Delta because of the reasons stated here: They support what they sell, everyone is familiar with their products, their rough-ins are easy to get and are common to whole lines of products, and you can easily get replacement parts for years (if not decades) because there are so many of them on the market.

    *Bro, you guys are tile guys - not plumbers - I would highly advise to let the plumbers do their part from now on*

      Plumber here ... They did a fine job. Plumbers run into fixtures they are not familiar with all the time. We just have to figure it out the same way these guys did.

      If only they didn't overcharge. plumbing is so damn easy. there's no reason for them to charge so much

      Cesar E. Orozco some food for thought is the possibility of water damage when dealing with plumbing. There is a lot of liability there. Some things are simple yes, but the years of experience are extremely valuable when things don’t go as expected. To me I don’t see any problem with the tiler doing their own valves, I think they go hand in hand.

      Plumbing is very extensive, especially Commercial Plumbing. If it were so damned easy, you wouldn't have to be licensed by the state, they wouldn't make so much $, and you wouldn't be calling us if you could do it yourself. In California you need a 25k bond just to apply. Not to mention INSURANCE. Plumbing tools and equipment are some of the highest in cost compared to all the trades. There's a cost to do business and it sounds like you are too cheap to see the value or you just can't afford it. What do you know about the intricacies of running a plumbing business to say we charge too much? Especially with the current inflation, where parts have skyrocketed 3 to 4 times as much as they were pre covid. Did you forget gas and all other overhead. Cesar Orozco, I can tell you would NOT last one day in an entry level plumbing job.

    Please keep making videos like this. I run into this crap all the time. I tell my customers to pick out top brands or at least something off the shelfs at the big box stores, less known brands on line are really dicy
