    I couldn't put my finger on why that first Conan page looked so familiar and then I realised it was like a cross between Frazetta's Princess of Mars cover and the original Star Wars poster.

    I have the Windsor Smith Dark Horse collections, and feel pretty much the same way you did here about them. Don't really love them, but enjoy them for what they are. Also, Buscema drawing and Chan inking, FOR LIFE!!

    Great channel, great vid. really enjoy it. I Somehow feel like my bike is laying down on the curb, outside the old grocery-store and im hanging out with my friends reading the comics we just bought inside. Its fun. Thanks so much.

    I do think a lot of enjoying the older coloring is nostalgia. A lot of the time artist say if they had those colors or techniques available back then that's what they would make it look like. If a recolor is done well artists have said that was the look they were intending but due to the limitations of the time it ended up looking different. I'm talking about the Dark Horse recoloring by the way.

    This is a great video which will help anyone thinking about investing in the Omnis. I am on an older reader but oddly I like the new colouring in the dark horse editions. This contrasts with how I felt about the Neal Adams recolouring where I prefer the look of his Green Lantern and Batman stuff as it was orginally intended. As for Buscema by issue with him is that he too good an artist. Someone once said that what makes an artist’s style distinct is their mistakes. Buscema doesn’t make mistakes and as a result I don’t find his style distinctive or appealing. The stuff he did on Conan which I prefer is where he is inked by artists like Alfredo Alcala or Ernie Chan where they bring in a bit of that dark gothic look that these artists have. I know what you mean about the appeal of newsprint and the smell. I like owning some stuff in its original form form for that reason. I own some of the early savage Swords. I used to love seeing them on spinner racks together with the racy men’s magazines of the period.

    Thanks for the Interesting insight into various formats. I personally liked Smith's quirky and unique art in the latter stage of his stint on Conan, he refined his technique and gave a certain 'classical' quality paticularly the b/w stuff in Savage Sword of Conan but my definitive choice would be Buscema only because of Alfredo Alcala's sublime inks when they worked together again in the b/w Savage Sword , some of that cross - hatching technique rivaled the great Bernie Wrightson.

    Oh my goodness I've been looking for a comparison video just like this because I'm only 22 and my first experience with these books was with the dark horse reprint (With a later Buscema book) and I wasn't sure if it was just me, but something about it felt a bit off, a bit garish and hard to look at to be honest. I thought I was going crazy because I love looking over John Buscema's work, but I had a hard time reading the reprints because the art looked kind of janky to me and I thought it might've had something to do with the coloring and looking at the video, it for sure does! Something was definitely lost in translation with the coloring and looking closely at these Dark Horse reprints I think the coloring really screwed with the line art, because it looks a bit more muddy and I can't tell if I'm just being nitpicky, but it's really screwing with me.

    9:25 I think who ever translated the art did it poorly. I have no ties nor have i ever read a Conan comic so no nostalgia goggles here. Its lost its grittiness. Its too clean. I cant think of an example off the top of my head but i know I’ve read comics that are a modern take on old art and that would have been perfect for Conan.
    Its the same problem when they do video game remakes or remasters. Sometimes the flaws and limitations of the original creation process is what creates the charm we all love.
    If i could translate this old art to modern gaming then something like Shadow of the Colossus Remake or better yet Dark Souls games would be the perfect translator. Dark, gritty, lots of grays almost washed out in a good way. It creates a serious tone like Diablo 2 vs the bright and colorful child like Diablo 3 style.
    Your criticism is on point bruv. 👌

    Love all the new conan omnibus, the only real drawback I think is the price! It can get expensive. Would love to see a video on Prince Valiant books! Thinking of diving into that Fantagraphic goodness.

    • @Steininger_Art
      @Steininger_Art  Před 3 lety

      Yeah, the price put me off for a long time. They came out years ago and I just picked them up now because I have such a hard time spending that much money. I only have 3 of these huge omnibuses - hoping to eventually get a couple more. And yeah - the Prince Valiant is amazing, and far cheaper and way better quality.

    I gotta-have my old "pulp" paper stuff to collect. (And have collected), SO Awesome.. I enjoy reprints as 'reader copies', and a magnum size omnibus I was never the biggest fan-of. However if its done right Im ALL-in.. Such a fun and satisfying hobby to enjoy. Wish i was an artist. But im happy to be a fan of those people who are.

    Also I still would go production wise with the originals, you are definitely right that if Marvel is going to do omnibuses they should be more cautious about their saturation. Personally I think a 60% white vellum would do wonders for the overall feel of the prints as a whole

    • @Steininger_Art
      @Steininger_Art  Před 3 lety

      Agree. It's too over the top and can feel almost jarring. Different paper and chilling out on the saturation would help.

      @@Steininger_Art I'd also like to point out that when it comes down to it glossy paper just doesn't have that great of a feel when reading compared to paper with any kind of texture. I only do glossy for prints I sell if I know they're going to be framed

  • @Hetnaset

    I agree with some of the comments here, computer coloring just doesn't work with older art, it loses its punch. Chris, what do you think of Kirby's 4th World and Kamandi stories?

  • @nivekleveb8872
    @nivekleveb8872 Před 3 lety +2

    I'm younger and was new to this material before I picked up the omnibus volumes (although I had a bunch of old Savage Sword issues from my uncle), but I think the computer coloring with all the gradients and rendering is ugly and is completely wrong for the older art. Honestly, I think the photoshop effects have only made newer artists more lazy as they rely on the coloring to provide definition and rendering instead of actually providing that detail and embellishment in the pencil and ink stage. Great video, btw

    • @Steininger_Art
      @Steininger_Art  Před 3 lety +1

      This is why I lean towards the black and white. It's more honest. There's no hiding behind colour at all.

    • @nivekleveb8872
      @nivekleveb8872 Před 3 lety

      @@Steininger_Art Agreed! You would ruin something like the Busceme-Alcala Savage Sword books with all that Photoshop mess.

    I also think the new coloring doesn't suit the series. I bought some of the Dark Horse book, and the Italian translations from Panini (I live in Italy.) the new coloring was full of errors, horrible and made some narration captions hard to read in the Italian editions. Give me the old school stuff any day.

    Hot pink Conan, just as originally intended. Sure.
    Conan Saga in B&W kicks both of those color reprints' asses. If you are an avid Conan collector I guess the bonus material is nice, but if you just want to have theso old Conan comic stories, both color reprints are poor choices.

      Savage Sword omnibus wins for me as it's in black and white.
