  • A few weeks back while thumbing through a random box of overpriced Conan Magazines I found this: the actual movie adaptation in magazine format with CCA approval!
    Needless to say this one did NOT take me long to jump into but I was surprised when I sat down to do this one and shot the conclusion: I did NOT see that coming...
    Chapters are included for those who want to skip on through.

    Marvel definitely did not miss any opportunity with the movie. 2 part comic adaptation, this magazine adaptation, and the novel sized comic adaptation too. They are really cool to own and read.
    On your other note, the greatest single issue ever is simple in my mind. It's the first one that spawned all the others. I didn't know this offhand, but Google reveals The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck, published in Europe in 1837. The first American one was in 1933 was Funnies on Parade, gathering comic strips.

      Someone made it to the easter egg! Awesome!
      The first one: Funny on Parade. That could be the one. It started it all in North America. Definitely something to consider!

    On the topic of the color, it probably looks different because that heavier stock allowed for more than the usual four color process that was used on ordinary newsprint comics of the day.
    Also if you liked that interview with Milius, I highly recommend you sit down and watch the movie with the commentary he and Arnold did (not sure if its on the new Blu-Rays but I know it was on the first director's cut DVD and the first blu-ray.

      Oh! That may be! I'll have to take a closer look at the pages again when I have this one out.
      And thanks for the tip about the commentary. I haven't checked to see if it's included but I'll take a looksee!

      Oh wow! It was included in an annual. That's cool. Is that like getting a Beano or Dandy Annual at Christmas?

    So the single greatest comic....for me im like you, to many things that lead/connect in most/all comics but 1......Punisher The End! Now there are many things for me that make this that one comic. Firstly it is Richard Corben my all time favorite artist. Two its The Punisher, not that im a huge fan of that character but i do enjoy him. 3 it is a very bleak comic that doesn't pull its punches. Its a one shot so that helps. If you've never read that issue i highly recommend it if you are into the Punisher
    And Fishbone man ive seen them quite a few times over the years. Planet Smashers, Mustard Plug, Real Big Fish, Pie tasters, Specials, .. etc seen many a great Ska band over the years, mostly at Lee's Palace for some reason

      Ooh! Another verified viewer to the end of the video! I think we're now well over what I was thinking would make it to here.
      Good choice! Those are totally valid reasons to think of this one as the number 1. Corben Art is amazing and totally unique. I just picked up a copy of Eerie 77 today because of nothing other than the amazing Corben cover art (which is eerily similar to the theme I'm seeing in issue 97 which is another one I already had).
      Lee's Palace! Wow! I haven't thought of that place in forever. I remember seeing Moist, and Treble Charger there and I'm sure there was another one but now I'm drawing a complete blank...I think it may have been on the same night as Treble Charger now that I think of it?
      Those are some amazing shows! I ended up seeing Fishbone at the Warehouse. I was close enough to the stage that a Fishstick flew off the drum kit and I caught it. I still have it on the shelf in the library to this day!

      @@tennesseefats Well I said "fuck it" and decided to watch the video anyway. Is this the same that is featured in one of the omnibuses, or is this another thing?
      And yeah, I also stick around to the easter egg stuff, always ;)

      Hah! Awesome! That's two people that I now know made it to the easter egg stuff!
      I don't know if this is the one in the omni or not if it's the comic omni it may be the two issue movie adaptation that was in comic format. Not sure on that one. That may require a comparison in and of itself!

    I'm of two minds about the 1982 Marvel Comics Adaptation of the first Conan movie. One, I love John Buscema's art, so I'd pause and perhaps buy this magazine. Two, I really dislike L. Sprague DeCamp. So I tend not to buy anything that he had something to do with.

    • @tennesseefats
      @tennesseefats  Před 29 dny

      I can see that being a detractor for this one. The essays and interviews were good though so there is that to counter-balance it.

    • @scotttrammell3913
      @scotttrammell3913 Před 29 dny +1

      @@tennesseefats I can see your point. Unfortunately, my dislike for DeCamp blinds me somewhat from enjoying his work. Although, recent evidence suggests that my particular grievance (one of them anyway) with DeCamp's heavy-handed "editing" of the original Howard Conan stories might very well be laid at the feet of his wife, Catherine Crook DeCamp.
