The thing with books as thick as that omnibus is that even with a sewn binding, the weight of the body will still cause the book to destroy itself over time if it sits on a shelf like other books. Glued bindings will fail even faster like you say. The best way to keep books like that is to lay them flat and they will last a long time.

I became a Conan fan when I first discovered the paperbacks in 1968, with the Frank Frazetta covers, and which led me to the very first Marvel Conan with Barry Windsor Smith (my favorite artist...) and onto Jordan's Chronicles, and than the Dark Horse issues #1-#50, which I consider he greatest graphic stories of all!, and on.........You must remember that the Marvel re-leases were not printed as an artist perspective, but as getting the old material out to younger and newer fans so they could be exposed to these classics. For that I applaud them. But you are correct in the fact that SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN, oh yeah, is a fantastic retelling of the Conan canon! Thanks for the review!

I *loved* ssoc. My earliest issue was 34. Could not find earlier.

One of the greatest comic series ever. I still buy one copy every time I visit my local comic shop. (They got an area in the back full of Savage Sword and 2000AD issues for sale.)
The art is truly unparalleled. They gave so much love to the Conan universe with this series.
Some of my favorite comics of all time. Grew up with them in my house, Dad had a bunch in a box. I am still trying to collect them all.

These books aren't meant to be handled as aggressively as you did here and definitely not meant to be dropped, let alone down some stairs.. lol the dc sandman omnis aren't a good point of comparison because those had notoriously bad binding and that's not the norm. Marvel specifically is better about their binding and this book in particular didnt have any issues. And there are ways to read omnis without it being a chore or uncomfortable. Also, unless you're outside the U.S. there are places to get these books for half off the cover price and they come in immaculate packaging that preserve the mint condition.
Edit: also, this omnibus is sewn AND glued binding and you can see it in the fact that the book does not try to close on its own. If handled properly, it should last a while. All about how you treat your stuff djdn

It gives me the feeling of reading a photocopy and it totally puts me out of the story. Terrible idea, at least they didn´t do this on the CTB omnibuses,.

It's kind of annoying that marvel reprinted the kurt busiek conan run ( which I love) but put all these orphaned issues in it. It's not nearly as good as the collosal conan books by dark horse which collects the whole series. Including the Truman stuff which I like. Hopefully marvel will continue reprinting the dark horse stuff. Kind of sucks for dark horse to loose out on that .

  • @SamlovesLulu

You spent the first 12 minutes of a 30 minute (WAY too long!!!) video expressing your individual personal feelings about at least a dozen topics. These were (mostly) related to the main topic, but I didn't come here to learn how you feel about any of them. I came here because I believed you were going to give me your impressions of the Marvel published omnibus of The Savage Sword Of Conan comics series. In other words, you wasted 12 minutes of my time. There is a time and place for the kinds of ancillary information you expounded upon in the first half of this video. Not always, but usually, it is better placed at the end, and FAR better if heavily abridged from the form in which you presented it. What you did was entirely self-serving. It took the needs/wants/desires of your viewers into account not at all. That is fine, of course. It is YOUR video, after all. But don't expect my patronage if this is the kind of amateurish drivel you intend to produce.
If you are going to talk about something, talk about IT!... get to the main topic quickly. Keep any preface short and strictly business. I have to watch the rest of the video (I stopped at about 13:30), but it seemed to me that once you finally started to talk about the actual book, you were doing well. You began with purely factual information. How it is bound. What's on the dust cover. What's in the preface and so forth. If it turns out that you keep to this format, I will be more pleased with this video. But that still means it is just about TWICE as long as it needs to be.
It seems as if you'd like to monetize your videos and maybe do this for profit. If so, I offer this critique as a way to help you improve. I am an educated, older, experienced gamer, comics, sci-fi, fantasy art and literature fan. I think it highly likely that you will fail to retain many CZcams consumers (I pay for a subscription) like myself if you continue to produce videos that are this poorly made. Do you honestly believe that your subscriber base and patrons (if any) will be composed purely of teen comics fans who have little to no appreciation for 1970's era comic stories and art? Barry Windsor Smith is one of the most famous illustrators of the 20th century. You treat his style, which is dated compared to the trash that passes for comic art today, I admit, as if it is something to be dismissed as "quaintly eccentric". You know nothing.
Incidentally, the plates to print these pages were produced photographically. You may or may not know it, but to the camera's eye, red and black are identical. This may account for the red square you noticed. In general, it is clear you know little to nothing about how these books were originally produced. From what I could see (at 4K on an 80 inch TV), they went to great lengths to reproduce the pages as they appeared on pulp paper, in the books as they were sold in the 70's. That matters.
    Study the material. friend.
Incidentally, your androgynous, metro-sexual nature is showing.
You will undoubtedly consider my words here to be harsh. I actually think you might have the ability, with lots of practice and a five gallon jug of polish, to actually do the CZcams thing if you wish. For now, however, the best part of this video, for me, has been writing this critique.
I hope you learn from it.

Sam Ash Looks like you wasted more time writing this comment than you had wasted by the slightly tangential opening ;)

    • @SamlovesLulu
      @SamlovesLulu Před 3 lety +1

@@alpertroncp2198 Did it take me more than 13 minutes to write my post? Yes. Was it wasted time? In my opinion, that depends entirely on your point of view. From mine, taking the time to write as I did demonstrates a couple of things... one; that I feel strongly enough about the subject to take the time to write a detailed post. And two; that I think the recipient (and/or his video) is worth the time and effort I expended to write it.
A blunt, or even harsh critique is not necessarily purely pejorative. Your post suggests that you think my critique was, at least, a waste of (my) time, and it also seems likely that you feel it (my post) is unnecessarily negative. An attack. This is not the whole truth. My critique was harsh. It happens that I know quite a bit about this particular subject and the related history. Hearing someone so far removed from the time and circumstances which prevailed when these books were released new speaking as if he has real knowledge of the books, or how they were produced, is frustrating, and frankly, just the tiniest bit infuriating.
So, if you feel that my critique is unduly harsh, and that is the reasoning that prompted you to respond as you did to my post, you need to go back and read my post more carefully. If you do this, you will realize that, for one thing, it absolutely is NOT purely negative.
I could go on to explain this further, but I think you have enough information now to understand how I feel about your post, and how I feel about mine. I have a question for you, now.
Why did you feel obligated to try and dissipate the intensity of my post? Do you think the owner of this channel requires your protection? Did I assail you, indirectly, with one or more of my opinions in my post?
I ask out of genuine interest, but I will tell you in advance that a part of the reason I ask is because I am always astounded when I get responses to posts which are specifically directed at a channel's owner from someone who is not that person. To someone with your intelligence, the difference between a post that is a general comment on a video (which, by it's nature, invites responses), and one aimed specifically at the owner of a channel are two completely different things. To make my point succinctly, a post that is addressed to the channel's owner is none of your damn business.
I wasn't speaking to you, slick. So why chime in?

    • @alpertroncp2198

Sam Ash You're making a massive assumption to think that I thought that your post was overly negative, or that I'm jumping to the defence of the channel - your points were all valid. I just couldn't help but notice the irony, and thought it was a little funny. And I chimed in because this is a COMMENT section that you opted to chime into as well.
I also understand how essay-writing can also be quite fun, and how a comment section can be a channel for it. I just keep mine to literary criticism, slick ;)
