at first I thought this was going to be just a regular (but fun) video on AVUS, but wow, I did NOT expect you to actually go there in person and show us the remnants of the unfinished South Turn! That's amazing!
Of course, I always go to the historic places myself :)
As Italian, it’s a shame that the old circuits like the old Hockeneim , this and the old Monza are now just a memory. They could be used for historical racing, at least 😢
It's all about cash unfortunately 😢
@@damag3plan danger as well, you need exstensive modifications in order to make them safe to race.
Monza, the footage from the Movie "Grand Prix".. is Amazing...
@@adrianzanolinot if they just use them for historic events like Goodwood.
They still use hay balls and are allowed to do that because it’s a private historic event to show the cars!
Given the circumstances I'd say they did a pretty good job preserving at least some important parts. Shame the banked corner couldn't at least be partially preserved but it is what it is.
As a local, driving on the AVUS fairly regulary, i am always conscious about the history of this place. But still i learned new things about it in this video, which is really quite impressive. especially the fact, that there is the banking for the Südschleife.
Too bad i'm too young to ever been there for DTM, my father has been there in 94 or 95 for one of the last races.
Thanks for sharing!
I drove along the AVUS' straights just a month ago. It astounded me that my friends aboard the car weren't annoyed at all by me letting the motor racing history nerd hang out for three minutes per straightaway!
So awesome to see this highspeed wonder. I love that they build a scale model next to the track to work from. Incredible that it's still there and some parts still in good condition.
Sehr interessant - auch wenn ich grundsätzlich wusste dass sie eine Rennstrecke war, werde ich das nächste Mal mit anderen Augen über die AVUS fahren. Danke für die Bilder und Infos!
Sehr gerne!
Ever since I found out about it, I've been kind of fascinated by the AVUS. Thanks for sharing it! That banking is incredible.
Glad you liked it!
As someone who grew up just down the street from the AVUS (literally) I was always fascinated by the track and what is still left by it. Great video
I'm still awestruck by Denis Jenkinson's report in 'Motor Sport' of the 1959 German GP at Avus, that I read in 1959 as a ten-year old. I still remember the newspaper photos of Jean Behra's Porsche going over the top of the North Curve banking during the supporting sports car race and reading how he died when, flung from the car, he hit a redundant WW2 flak gun emplacement.
Behra hit a flag pole, not a flak gun.
Thank you, I love these historical glimpses to the past. 👍🏻👋🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
I worked at DRM AVUS races in the 1980s, but did not know about the bits of track in the woods. Very informative and nicely made video.
Great informatve video. When I visited Berlin from the UK in 1992 I hired an Opel Astra and drove the 2 remaining lanes of the AVUS. 20 years later I took my Toyota MR2 for a few laps of the Nurburgring. The only race circuits I have ever driven on. I have walked the Brooklands bankings though.
You forgot to show the beautiful sculpture of the motorcycle racers . Amazing video. thanks
Yes I went there but didn’t include it.
Amazing to see the remnants of this very important racetrack. Excellent video!
Thanks a lot!
I love the level of detail that you put into these historical videos! Good job. After finishing one video I always want MOAR! :D
Thanks! More to come!
It's a shame a place like this doesn't bring more tourists. It would be nice if they cleaned up and repaired that model in the forest for people to visit. I think I had seen photos of that before, but I never had it explained what it was.
This is my absolute favorite video of yours and it is a commendable capturing of this track's history. Walking around the woods so we could see the remnants was epic. I'd love to learn more about the aero on those GP cars.
Thanks and wait for it!
Thank you for this. AVUS is one of those historical tracks that evoke the feeling of a 'simpler' time.
Understatement of the day. A huge jump…. Say no more.
This was really cool, learned something new, your effort is appreciated :)
Glad to hear that!
Good stuff mate. Plenty of videos out there about these old tracks that are pretty light on information, but you wen the extra kilometre on this one and taught me plenty I didn't know.
Absolutely thankful for this Video 🤝”
My pleasure
I really enjoyed this video on the AVUS track!
Great to hear! More to come!
Historical videos FTW.
Real in person footage is the best
VERY interesting! Thanks for showing us the locations of the old Avus track!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank You! Great as allways. Maybe just one proposal for next video from a historic location - could be useful/practical to add also map/illustration with Your actual position at the location at the corner. While some places are easily recognisable, some are not as much, hence such map/illustration could help viewer/s to orient themselves...
Great suggestion!
You should have gone up to the Funkturm, where you have a perfect view of the whole north corner area.
I wish avus still existed. It was so unique and interesting. But people nowadays, especially non-americans, want more "interesting" (geometrically complex) tracks.
Ebenfalls danke für die amerikanische einheiten ;)
Tolles video
Danke für diesen Einblick.
Ich bin schon einige male den Kronprinzessinnenweg entlang gefahren mit Rad und mir ist dort der Hügel aufgefallen von der neuen Südkurve.
Jetzt weis ich was es ist. Danke =)
How can nobody realise the potential of drawing some tourists just to look at the old model and embankments of the old track? This is ridiculous
loved your video mate!
Wirklich starkes Video!
Vielen Dank!
Great video, they should rebuild this track and make a German version of the Daytona 500 every year :D
Good idea!
Le Mans proto type 24 hours....speed dedicated lanes on the corners and with 9km long straight aways there is room for at least 15 classes of vehicles....
Excellent video. Thanks for posting this information. It is the best I have seen on the AVUS circuit. A great history lesson. Cheers from Texas.
Glad you enjoyed it
Fascinating!
Sehr gutes Video mach weiter so hab einiges gelernt 👍👍
Great video. I quite enjoyed the tour!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! This is a track I had basically no knowledge about besides heard one time is exists. Your vid gives a nice overview of what happened and why. Great to see the remnants of it recorded! If I go to Berlin by car, I will surely drive the A115 and go to the curves
Awesome content - well done
Glad you enjoyed it
Interesting history. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Wunderbar!
Absolutely fascinating .......... damn war!
We done sir, well done!
Thank you kindly!
I had no idea that they started building a new south curve!
Awesome video - never knew this existed
Glad you liked it!
Brilliant video - I learnt many things that I didn’t know before. Generally articles and videos about AVUS focus on the banked North Turn, there don’t seem to be many images of the original South Turn, fewer still of the unfinished banked South Turn. It’s astonishing that after 85 years there are still visible remains and you can even see this on Google Earth. One question - had it been completed, would the banked South Turn have been identical to the banked North Turn? Thank you so much for producing this.
Thanks a lot! The new south turn would have been lower but with larger diameter than the north turn, so overall much faster than the old one. So that would have possibly increased average speed to more than 300km/h.
Another question - does anything remain of the hairpin used for the 1959 German GP? I used to be able to see (on Google Earth) one of the two concrete “lay-byes” either side of the dual carriageway which together formed the South Loop on the shortened circuit. I can’t see that on current Google Earth.
Excellent video! I'm in.
Awesome! Thank you!
Interesting film.
Ah I remember this track from an old rFactor mod. I thought it was a fantasy track at first.
Fascinating, I’m surprised how much has survived. Last better than the Brooklands track which, extremely ironically, has been partly obliterated by Mercedes-Benz. 🙂
Schade dass das Modell der Überhöhung und die angefangene Kurve in einem so schlechten Zustand sind
Can you do a video on Old Monza
100KPH speed limit is a travesty...
Thank you for this video, I shall make my wife drive here next time so that I can look out for all the things you mention!
I visited Berlin in 2022. Was blindly following satnav instructions on the way to Leipzig. Imagine my surprise when I recognized the race control tower!
Your pronunciation is very good
That gate from 2:40 - looks pretty similar to another famous german gate. Well, it's only a gate ;-)
👍👍
It just goes to show you that times change.
👍💪✌
Who else thinks this video has the vibes of a B Sport - Auto Shenanigans collab? 😄
So, nature wins ! 😉
the guys at AutoTopNL run high speed driving tests on the unlimited speed section of the autobahn regularly. the fastest standard production cars on the market can reach & exceed the lap speeds of the GP cars at AVUS in the races of the late '30s. the "democratization" of human desire & experience via technology.
Man if I would live near Berlin I would make it my project to reconstruct the model!
Get the proper approval from the owner of the forest and save this great piece of history!
With a few hours of work and not even 1000€ material we could restore it to its former glory :)
make it a project for your channel!
If there’d be an event I would even travel there to help rebuild it!
I agree with you there is a hotel next to it but they demolished the 43 degree bank in 1967
Is this modern archaeology that needs to be preserved?? 🤔
Really well made video and great research to.
Much appreciated!
