My first boss once said: "The less morals you have, the more money you'll make. But it's only a matter of time before the world catches up to you." How well that applies to Doug's stories is kinda chilling.

A Ferrari with no service history or records??? Hard pass, something's very shady there.
My Dad told me a good story from back when he was a car buyer for a used car dealer before I was born. He was a young guy and was just getting started going to auctions and grizzled auction veteran gave him a little advice about working in the car buying business. He said something to the effect of, 'to succeed in this business, you have to have larceny in your heart!'
If you buy a car where they refuse to give you service records and they claimed “no paintwork, no damage”, assume that there was paintwork and major damage. That’s why they don’t want to release the records and bid accordingly.
One of the main reasons I look at a business’s reviews before I even talk to them. Thank you Doug for the stories makes me feel better about some of my FUBAR’s with car buying haha.
Unfortunately public reviews do not tell the majority of the story. The best liars in the car business will hire people or use other tactics to bolster their reputation and bury the negative reviews; I've even heard of dealers threatening and/or paying off people to remove negative reviews. There are a lot of unscrupulous dealers who have a glowing reputation online.
Reviews? Oh the naivety!
Always Remember:
1. Online reviews are often dishonestly "enhanced" toward the positive with paid endorsements/reviews.
2. Epstein didn't kill himself.
3. Wikipedia is not a reliable source, neither is little Brian.

but not for the ones who "searching the internet properly" - can't erase that just hide it a bit
I think looking at reviews is a solid indication, but it doesn't mean anything, sometimes people don't think reviews are worth the hassle or are worried about Karma or something else biting them, benefit of the doubt.
I recently took my car to a 4.8 star mechanic who completely wasted 2 days of my time, promised same-day fixes, etc, and didn't do it.
I only didn't fix my car because I'm busy AF with my business + my wife's DR appointments for Leukemia, so I just thought id pay someone else, big mistake.
Could I get angry and leave a negative review? Sure, and given the context, I certainly wanted to, 4.8 star mechanic lying to me isn't cool, but I also don't want to hurt someone's business on what could've been bad luck on their end.
Sadly even the good reviews are often fake. Also competition will put fake bad reviews,
There's a bully car dealer up in NW Indiana, Thomas Dodge. They'll swarm your vehicle as soon as you pull up and go so far as to ask for your keys or money/card on order to get a quote and will almost hold your stuff hostage in order to make the sale. Very intimidating when you're a young buyer.
Do everyone a favor and name them.

Gurley Leep in NW IN does that too. They “lost the keys” to my potential trade after they insulted me with a crooked deal. I got very aggressive with them and my keys were “found” in about 5 seconds.
How did that guy who bought the "matching numbers" Porsche manage to be that dumb while simultaneously having access to $40k without the consent of his legal guardian?
I worked in used car sales in South Africa for +- 10 years or so, at both privately owned and big name manufacturer dealerships and the horror stories I could tell you about the shady stuff I witnessed would make your head spin...there was even a guy that used to visit hundreds of dealers, country wide that specialized in "Chopping Mileages" on used cars, you name the brand or the car and he had the software to do it...he made a killing!

Had an Aston dealer in the Northeast claim no paint work or body damage. Then looked up the vin and on the auction website the car was clearly listed by the honest original owner that a small area was repainted. Dealer still claimed no paint work, turns out they never inspected the car either for the timeless CPO certification though it claimed to be inspected. Aston Martin Preowned corporate was actually very nice and explained many dealers unfortunately don't do the inspections until after the cars listed though they claim to and they don't have the power to do much because of franchise laws are heavily in a dealers favor. It was refreshing to have corporate be open and transparent.

A long time ago had the appraiser look over a 1 owner no accident vehicle only to find signs of repair and the numbers didn't match up. Sales people move dealerships and one knew this car. Turns out unknown to the owner this car slipped nose first off the transporter the day it arrived at the original dealership and they did a quick repair job on it and then handed it to the guy as brand new....

Doug and Rabbit have the best dealer stories. Doug is chill and Rabbit is amped if that sounds about right. Both are great though.
17 years in the car biz. Always remember: "If it smells like crap, it is crap!". Still a few honest dealers and customers out there that give you hope in humanity .
The final example is a prime one about honest vs shady business. Shady gets quick cash. Honest builds relations that gets you more sales.
My family is prime example. Life long GM owners. Would only deal with the one honest dealership in our city. Decades later? Dealer got big.... and got big business problems. Nobody in our family buys GM anymore and others? Same issues.
However the Toyota dealership that is honest seems to be experiencing massive growth and has frequently had to get allocations from other dealers to fill sales. Even before semiconductor shortage, they would sell almost every new car they get quite quickly and going by ratings? I was not alone in my excellent experience.

Seriously though issue was a 2009 GM I had bought brand new. 10 years later and 80k km thing is literally mechanically written off cause of so much stuff leaking and failing on it. But dealer side is zero support in getting parts. "Discontinued, etc." And what parts I could get? "Oh, we didnt call that parts were in because said would be 3-5 days"
Also once found a 7/11 cup in back seat after oil change. Had oil all over steering wheel another, mis-diagnosed engine issue, improperly fixed, etc.
So since that car became undriveable after steering pump failure too, I needed a vehicle with winter coming up. Found a 2000 4runner with 300k on it. Ran fine for two years with only needing service items. So screw it. Will get a nice summer car and got a TRD Camry.
Scruffy me pulls up in an old 4x4. Walks in wearing flannel and work boots. Treated me like a customer and did a lot to get that car brought in for me, especially with onset of part shortage. Not even any markup either. That was better service than I was getting at the GM dealership where we did business for many years.

There is one rule : if a car is at an auction, especially if the start price is really low, there's a reason for that.
Of course it is not always true, but why would a Ferrari dealer sell a 360 CS through an auction ?
"- Boss, we have a nice 360CS as part exchange, low miles, no crash, beautiful color combo, and it's mint, would be great in our stock !
- Nah, put it at an auction so we can sell it at a discount to another dealer"
I think people are forgetting about repos, which honestly make up about 80% of all of our cars at the auction. These range from cars that are smashed into pieces to brand new low mile cars with absolutely nothing wrong and everything in between. in this economy many dealers aren’t sending any cars to us, almost all inventory is repos… which makes perfect sense in this economy.
Sorry for replying to a 5 month old comment but I think buyers forget about this often. Many cars at auction genuinely truly have no reason to be there other than someone who couldn’t make a payment on time
For the luxury car coming from a dealer though, definitely suspicious. Just saying, we definitely sold a really mint 30k mile 03 dodge viper from WBAC at auction for full retail price a few weeks ago
Thank you for sharing these stories - I have to say though, although I don't have any close friends who are rich businessmen, I have met a few over my life-time, and one thing that always struck me was how most of them operate by trying to screw someone over. In fact, it even seems to be glorified if you can do that and get away with it. Glad to see though that you appear to be a straight up, honest guy.
Had a dealer recently scratch a cars clear coat when washing the car though it was requested not to be washed. They used a brush and there were light perpendicular lines in the clear coat. Gave them the chance to have their detailer fix it after at first they told me to put some wax on the car. Then the car came back with the lines still there but lighter and the paint now hazzy. Complained and they told me I was looking for free services and that they'd contact local dealers to black list me. Meanwhile I have dashcam footage of them washing the car with the brush, they walked me through the service area showed me they do not using a grit guard or second bucket when washing cars. You can't do anything to dealers as a customer unfortunately.
Name and shame! Fuck those dealers, they deserve to go out of business

Had a BMW dealer on a lease deal in NY at the time of signing in the finance office claim they forgot to include 800 in fees due at signing when recalculating the DAS after credit was already run. Was a nightmare, will never go back to that dealer or recommend them. They paid the 8XX extra but the salesman blamed finance and finance blamed the salesman.

I agree. I had a seller of a home that was made at me for telling them the house would not close in a day, since the buyer had not signed loaned docs. My client called the other agent, who lied and my client calmed down. Next day, I tell them it will be a few days, and my client raised hell. Once again call the other agent, who assures them it will close today, my client calms down and it does not close. Finally, I just started lying to my client and they were fine. It closed about 5 days late, just like I expected. However, the moral of the story is some people would rather be told what they want to be told, versus told the truth.

Every time my wife and I have a rough day with a client. We use the word "Ice cream"
One day we were in the market our son was about 2-3. We were walking down the frozen food aisle and he sees ice cream section his eyes light up. He runs to the ice cream, as I open the door for him, he picks up a container (I don't remember what it was Rocky road or double fudge something of that nature).
Anyways I tell him "No, not that one son" he has a nuclear meltdown, after he calms down a bit. I look at him and say "Didn't you say last week you don't like chocolate ice cream... And only want vanilla/strawberry?" (he had Neapolitan ice cream couple weeks before and didn't like the chocolates).
So after going back and forth with him for a bit explaining to him there's no vanilla in that ice cream. Despite the little chunks of Marshmellow, he kept on pointing to on the cover illustration. I just said okay let's go get the ice cream.
My wife trying to hold back the laughter, looks at me and gives me this eye. As soon as he's distracted, she takes the container out and switches it with vanilla ice cream. 😂
Doug, if you read these comments, I'd just like to say thank you, for sharing stories about your business. It gives me a chance to see a piece of a world, I'd never see, unless somebody, like you, steps forward, and shares.

On the subject of the so called clutchless “automatic stickshift” on the Porsche, this transmission actually had a clutch servo that was activated when you touched the shifter. I had a ‘73 VW Super beetle which employed the same clutchless system, we called them “slush-a-matics” Pretty much everyone I tell about this, looks at me like I’m out of my mind.
Mercedes had one too, the infamous Hydrak transmission.

Every time Doug has a story out I immediately watch it. One day I hope to run a dealership as he does.
Corvette front bumper? How much do you want to bet they wrecked the car and were trying to get you to pay for it. This has happened to me. We got the police involved and impounded the car. And sure enough, it was wrecked. They, there were two of them; the dealer and the buyer, wound up in jail. Even the owner of the body shop was arrested. He was helping them perpetuate the fraud. This apparently wasn't the first fraud they committed together. I got the car back and they didn't get their money back. They also had to pay for my lawyer. Yay for our side, for once.
VW had that shift system. A lot of complaints because if you rested your hand on the shifter you could easily accidentally cause the clutch to go out.
Honesty is still best. I worked for a real estate office that produced a successful local magazine. I go to a listing appointment and the seller asked about the magazine? I told her it is really a tool to find sellers, as her townhouse will sell fast and won't be around long enough to be in it. She went on to tell me a previous agent from our brokerage talked up the magazine for 30 minutes and the seller thought it was bullshit. Anyway, the seller and I hit it off right away due to my honesty and I ended up selling about 5-6 of her other properties.
I hear you I bought a new vw and I had a trans problem I took it to one vw dealership they said that it was nothing and gave me a huge list of repairs that needed to be done immediately.took it to another dealership not only did they find the tras problem they were honest about the repairs saying were not needed always get a second opinion kids!
if there's anything I've learned in the car business (especially with big dealers like CNC) profits are short term, but reputation is forever. - also, PPI YOUR CARS before you purchase them! independent shops that you know and not the dealer's shops!
Easier said than done. Most sellers wont agree to a PPI because of the hassle.

You answered your own question in the title. Liars and cheats, bullies and thieves, they are dishonest people who put money over people. They'd rather mark a product up by 200% to make a profit, rather then keep the price at a reasonable price for everyone to be able to have a chance at buying it. Take for instance the trucks now. There's 2 types of people that buy a truck, those who actually need a truck to be used as a truck, which is why they pay 1-2K to have a vehicle they can beat up working with it to make money, and those who buy a truck as a glorified grocery gitter, who don't care if it's 10 or 20 grand. The used car market is getting despicable. Luckily, you can still find some honest people with an actual fair price for there 30+year old truck.

I used to work in the car industry. Sad to say I was not successful enough because I was much to honest and was unable to shut up and lie regarding car I was trying to sell. I was very good in buying good cars for little money but I was a disaster in selling them for what they were worth.
I met so many bigmouth, cheating and low class bastards in the business. I was ashamed to be in the same trade as them. But I am convinced that karma will bite those guys in the butt sooner or later. And I have seen that happen. We had a saying: In the old days there were the shady horse traders who often sold stolen or sick horses. Today they are replaced by shady car salesmen.
I make one thing clear: Not all car sales men are shady. Many are successful without cheating anyone. And they deserve it.
I’ve had my m3 in an accident and the guy writing the estimate was a car enthusiast. He made the estimate like 2-3 times what the car needed. I asked the insurance for cash not the repair and paid him to fix it afterwards. It’s sketchy what you can do now lol

They don’t want to be helped, they want to be told they’re making the right mistake. I tried being honest, I tried steering them right, I even referred them to other brands on occasion, but no good deed goes unpunished. After losing enough deals only to have them cry on my shoulder after, I played the game and paid my bills … _and I ain’t apologizing for it either!_ 😒

Attorney here, I genuinely think you should say who that auction was. There is a very good chance they have done that to several people and probably still are.
It was 1976 the used car manager where I worked hooked up a creampuff of a car he was trying to sell an older woman to a brand-new wall-sized car engine tester The Sun equipment salesman had set up in our service department to show what kind of great shape it was in. The printout of problems was 5 pages long the car wasn't sold and the dealership didn't buy the machine. Good times.
Many years ago I bought my wife a Ford Granada Scorpio 2.9L. Dealer someone had put Cosworth wheels on it and I guy had left a deposit on it over a month before, and not been back so he would cut me a deal (I thought that was suspicious ) car seemed okay for the money and I always had timing belt changed and a mechanic check before using cars. My brothers friend came to do the work said that the car was a solid real cosworth and had fun putting it back into tune . Lied to but came out well.
I got a good story from a used dealer knowingly clearing codes and selling me a truck and then going out of business and stealing money that was supposed to go to the sales tax

Although I was only dealing with thousands, rather than tens of thousands, I used to have a blast buying and selling the Japanese built Toyota trucks, to exporters.
In countless cases, I’d find a 5spd 4WD truck, for a decent price.
After looking it over, I’d ask to do a quick test drive. I’d then swing by my Honduran friends, sell it for at least twice the asking price, and only then hand the owner the money for the truck.
I also bought many, with my own money, and could sell every one of them to the exporters, in one sitting, knowing that Id find more, later that same day.
Boy those were the days.
I hate that they’re all now in Central America, but easy money was hard to say no to.
Well that's not only car business, it's everywhere. You want to succeed and don't have self consciousness, that's the way to go. I wonder how these people go to sleep at night...
The thing is... once you sell your integrity it costs a lot more to earn it back, if you ever can. Well done.

I don’t know how many times I’ve sold something with honest disclosure of issues only to see it reposted hours later as working perfectly. I don’t sell to them again, but there’s a never ending line ready to do the same thing. I don’t sell much anymore.
And this is the literal reason I DO NOT LEAVE MY HOUSE. Everybody lies and nothing is going to change about that

Just expect the worst in people , and you won't be disappointed or unprepared...
that Porsche with a noisy gearbox, 9 times out of 10 is the release bearing. They work in a pretty dusty environment. That bearing is probably $200 + R&R gearbox not full rebuild. Not likely to be internal as the thrust bearings in the gearbox are lubricated in oil, if one of those are bad it probably wont select some gears properly or even pop out of gear. If you constantly deal with cars with issues its a good idea to have someone on your team that knows a bit about a lot otherwise you end up like samcrac

I wish there was a way to report private sellers that pull some of this crap. I few vehicles I have looked at over the years, had MAJOR issues, including parts list (no labor) that exceed the value of the car. I bring that to the sellers attention because I may still be interested but they won't budge on the price. I later see that same vehicle for sale from someone else.... Several times I went to look at it again, from the new owner and they had bought it at asking price and just want it gone, or the want what they put into it...

My worst experience with cars wasn't from sellers, but from repair shops.
You need to read the last chapter of a piece titled The Hatchet Man's Playbook. It's all about how lawyers can sell their clients out six ways from Sunday without the clients ever knowing it.
Remember test driving a Mitsy 2000 gto, Manual box felt harsh, so mentioned that and the dealer said go and see the guys next door who conveniently operated a gearbox shop, $150 for a new gearbox they said, Yeah Right I said and walked, 6 months later I saw the car parked in front of a business so I went and asked about it, the girl behind the desk said she brought it, 3 months later it was repoed cos there was money owing on it, they just got it back and the gearbox seized, scam dealers are everywhere

One of my favorite stories is I bought a porche 996 s with 36,300 miles after porsche 3 year lease
They listed the car TMU so bought it 10k under market. I called porsche and got the records and they showed warrentee work done at and crossed the repair records and fixed it and Carfax fixed the records. Wahoo I made 12k on that beautiful porsche.
I have a 1971 VW superbeetle & it has that same automatic stick-shift set upas well. Very weird setup & I had never seen or heard of it in any other vehicle besides the VW superbeetle.
They usually profit from the gallons of bondo I apply before a quick paint squirt makes it sellable.

I buy and sell classic cars on a small scale (10-15 a year) as an aside to my garage business and i feel the general public would rather believe lies and flannel , when you try to stick to the truth it seems counterproductive, trouble is i cant help but be straight and honest as i dont want people coming back saying this or that - i want to be able to look everyone in the eye and say what ive done is right. I can well believe that story about the guy paying up even though hes been told it wasnt matching numbers, as they want the lies to be true so paying 10k more makes it so - the trouble is the honest man is on the receiving end of the whining!
I worked with a guy who did some shadier stuff, sometimes by accident, but we only sold antiques and rarely did they run or move. One guy was pissed his '70 Chevelle that he paid a couple grand for turned out to have frame rot in one of the torque boxes. I had no idea. A 55 Chevy wagon we sold, the guy flat towed it about four hours home and the entire floors fell out of it. I have no idea how the car could be so rusted, I saw photos after, usually the frame in those would be gone too. I never got to see under that car. Some guys in California bought a '60 Cadillac hearse and I guess it too fell apart on the way back. It didn't look like a bad car to me. But they never showed us what fell apart. They didn't care too much because they were making a Ghostbusters replica with it.
The only moderately shady thing I will do is people are just stupid, they will look at a car with the paint baked off, see rust and think junk. I throw a quick and dirty coat of paint on there and let it weather a month or so, take new photos, and the same idiots will now see a great car they can build - which it always was in the first place. I had this 31 Ford AA truck and I couldn't even get a silly offer for it. Cab and chassis, cab not in terrible shape. Well by then I'd collected enough mostly freebie parts, I put together a chassis that had been under a coupe, with axles from someone else, swapped over the cab, took the bed off another A I had bought that someone made into a truck in the 40s, and by the time I was done I had a pretty clean flat black fenderless pickup all set up. Once I relisted it, it sold in about 30 days and went overseas somewhere for $3500. Not the only vehicle that's been brush or roller painted to make look better, either.
