- I've received quite a few requests to do a rundown of my big pedalboard so here it is! Hope you dig it.

Another amazing video Shawn! Would love to see a video of you setting up your cab with the 121 and 57, how you run it in your home set up and what sound proofing you use. So many home recordings happening these days - would be great to see how you set it up at home as these videos alway have amazing quality (obviously 121, TG2 and amazing tone in those fingers play a big part!).

Thanks man. I think I screwed up and said dotted quarter. Yeah its a quarter with a dotted 8th. Sometimes my brain can't catch up to how fast my mouth is running!:)

That was the JHV3 Audio and Switches mod. He also added a gain control on the top of the M9. That mod made a huge difference for sure!

Great rundown man! For verb I sort of dial in similar tones, but I use the Matthews Effects Astronomer. 2 channel verb with a shimmer in it if you want it. pretty small footprint. you should check it out if you're every wanting to cut down on space or need something for the fly rig!

Shawn. Excellent! So Ive been with Tim Pierce for these last few years and I just found you! Thanks for being out there on CZcams! So Shawn, is there a list... anywhere in the world... that would tell someone which overdrive pedals fall into which categories? Some list that tells us which OD's/Boosts fall into categories such as> Boost, Klon, Tubescreamer, Dumble, Plexi, Treble Boost, (Dallas) Boosted Mids, Scooped mids, Fuzz, Distortion etc you know what I mean right?
I have 40-60 different OD/Boost pedals... because I have a problem..., lol, but what I DONT know is what the pedal is trying to do/emulate/copy. I know there is only like 5 different original circuits and even though it may be a "Boutique" name brand pedal like the Tumnus = Klon, they are ALL still clones of some amp or circuit right? Dallas Treble booster for example Thanks man.

Killer Video man! In regards to the M9... what are some of the other sounds that you use / love in other situations? I'm struggling to find a solid Trem with it, do you use a regular Trem within the M9 ever, other than the stutter. Thanks!
Thanks so much Shane. Unfortunately, I haven't found a trem I like in the M9. I've been using a Strymon Flint for trem and verb.
Some people love the multi effects pedals like LIne 6 offers, but, I have always had problems with a volume jump when using them paired up with single effect pedals. I haven’t tried Line 6. Anybody else have this problem ? Thank you.
No DUDE!?!? drives are such weird beasts, can't seem to stick to just one... I currently have a board with an archer/Winford/dude and a larger board running a Crazy Tube Circuits Starlight (check that out Shawn)/bluenote/pettyjohn chime. Great sounds!

I've become such a huge fan of your demos. I gain great insight. Can you suggest any delay settings that you don't tap in for solos? E.g. I've been using 2 delays at 500 & 375 that Andy Timmons apparently uses for soloing. I also tried 600 (Read Neal Schon uses that setting). Lastly, I've experimented with some dotted eighth and quarter note too. However, I'd love a standard one for most solos. Its too impractical to tap in the timing in live settings for me. Thanks.
I tend to sit in the 275-325 range and keep the delay dialed a little darker. Thanks for your question and kind words.
Thanks for this Shawn. Curious about your use of the Archer, as Rockett say it isn't meant to be used as a standalone drive into a clean amp but that seems to be how you use it and it sounds great?

Was expecting more from Pettyjohn considering how much you honestly seemed to love their pedals. I can see why you went with those drives you did choose, however, due to their individual levels of variability. Still haven't ever been a fan of the morning glory no matter the amp/guitar. I love the m9. To me, it could probably handle 90% of my pedalboard duties if I wasn't such a nerd.
Yes I do really like the Pettyjohn stuff. I try not to have too many of the same pedals on different boards. That being said I'll probably put a Lift or maybe a Chime pedal on the board when I have it re-done.
Hey Shawn in the video you said that you ordered the wrong cable, 2524, do you typically use something different? I'm debating on going with either 2524 or 2319 on a pedalboard I'm currently building. Do you have any suggestions? Watched this video quite a few times, your a killer player/tech and awesome guy for doing this video! Thanks!
2524 was a heavier gauge than I wanted for the sake of aesthetic but it sounds perfectly fine. If I were to wire my board again right now I'd go 2319. It's way more pedal board friendly and will sound the same. Thanks man!

Thanks man...Well all of my PRS guitars are PRS pickups. I'm a big Lollar pickup fan overall. My Collings I35 has Throbaks and my Suhr Strat and Tele both have Suhr Pickups. In general if I'm going to switch to something other than stock it's a set of Lollars.

Sorry read that too fast. I just use plain old Fender Heavy picks. I think the shape is 251?
Wow! Thanks so much for posting this video! Totally dig your set up and gave me a few ideas along the way. Btw on your m9 you had 2 quarter notes a reverse and a what? Dotted quarter?
Sorry I wasn't very clear...my fault. I had a tape delay set to quarters and dialed lower. The 2nd was a Digital Delay with the top end backed off but with more mix set to quarters. The 3rd was an analogue delay with mod set to dotted 8th and the 4th delay was a reverse delay set to quarters. Thanks for the question and tuning in!
Shawn Tubbs Thanks for the response! Can I ask one more question? So when your playing rhythm and want to take a solo do you turn off say your archer and then turn on say the Winford?

Shawn - I find that the same tones I'm happy with in my studio monitors using the Two Notes Live don't translate the same in my inner ear monitors even when using high end buds- much brighter and too pointy. Do you have the same experience and if so how do you compensate?
That is a dilemma for sure. I end up dialing my tones a bit darker with in-ears every time.

Shawn, when you play the analog and digital delays together it sounds like the analog is set to quarter note and the digital is set to dotted 8th note (you said dotted quarter), are these the correct settings? Also what is the tape delay set to time wise? Thanks
Yeah I don't know why I said it that way...Sometimes by brain can't keep up with how fast I'm running my mouth!!;) The Digital Delay is set to quarters and the Analogue with Mod Delay is set to dotted 8th. The Tape Delay is set for quarter.

Hey Joshua,
Do you mean ducked or threshold compressed delays? Basically those delays are compressed or "ducked" via a set threshold while you're playing and then become more apparent when you stop? I do use duck delays occasionally but only for effect. In general I prefer basic delays. Thanks for your question and the kind words!
Shawn Tubbs ah yes that kind of delay. Reason im asking is lots of times id want the delay to trail the note to fill the space but dont want it messing around when im playing rhythm. That means you'd have to hv your mix pretty low with the standard delay right?

Yes that's one of the ways one would use a ducked delay . One suggestion is sometimes it's better to run your delay level lower and use more repeats as apposed to using a ducked delay. It gives the perceived amount more delay without clutter...So say you're hearing 3 perceived repeats in the mix but it's not enough delay level, try increasing the repeats to 6 or 7 before bumping your delay level. Shawn Tubbs alright thanks for the response. I tend to lean more toward transparent drives like the lightspeed and timmy. But i am looking for a little more gain and some character. Very similar to what you said you like about the ghost drive.

What I'm trying to figure out is how the volume pedal is wired to control both the Vertex Boost and the stutter tremolo rate on the M9. What am I missing here?
Hey thanks for the question. The Dunlop EXP pedal is only plugged into the Vertex Boost. It's not controlling anything else on the board. The stutter trem on the M9 is random within the program. Thanks for tuning in!

What was the mod on the m-9? Forgive me if you already covered it.
That was the JHV3 audio and switches mod. I also had them add the master volume mod.

That Trainwreck is an Express. I'm not that hip to them unfortunately. I think it's a 50 watt. 2EL34 amp.
Is the m9 stock? Sounds great, also the playing does not hurt the tone either :)
Thanks for tuning in! That M9 was upgraded by JHV3. Lots of new components in the audio path as well as switches that wont be as apt to break. It's sounds more silky and open for sure!
Cool good to know, thanks for taking the time to reply! I've always been wary of multi fx boxes and tend to use individual fx but for something like delays and tremelo as you demonstrated it seems like a space saver and sounds great!
I have the m9, and just wondering if the jhv3 mod is really that different and worth it?
I absolutely think its worth it. Everything sounded more open and lush and it's nice to have switches that won't break.

There are 4 delays in the scene I used.
1 Tape Echo Dry Thru - Bass 40% Treble 10% Feedback 25% Mix 15% Quarter tap
2 Digital Delay - Bass 30% Treble 45% Mix 45% Feedback 35% Quarter Tap
3 Reverse Delay - Mod Speed 10% Depth 90% Feedback 45% Mix 50% Quarter tap
4 Analogue with Mod - Mod Speed 80% Depth 45% Mix 30% Feedback 40% Dotted 8th Tap
The percentages are based on the LED graphs on the M9. It's not going to be exact but it will give you a starting point.

The Strymon is really great but I would suggest you check into a mod on your M13. My M9 sounded so much more open and lush after I had JHV3 do there thing to it! JHS also does great work.

just setup a new scene with those delays... Wow... I am blown away. I used to add more treble for clarity, but for some reason the conservative treble settings you suggested work wonders.

What studio monitors do you use?
Really old set of Powered Event 20/20s. They're on the way out truth be told but I'm gonna hang on until the bitter end because I'm so used to them.

That was built by JHV 3 as a "one-off" switcher. Jack does a lot of custom work like that.
How does the ghost drive compare to the king of tone?
I think its a completely different beast. The KOT is more of a really great sounding TS9 kind of thing. Both killer.

Shawn, is your volume pedal a stock "pot" style rather than light technology ?
Yeah, it's just a stock potentiometer style pedal. It's plugged into the Vertex boost insert which I'm told keeps your signal isolated from the impedance of the volume pedal.
I appreciate how you take extra time here and there to explain not only the whats but the whys. You are the same patient guy you were way back when you and Scott were running the OC Boogie store.

Dynamic delay?
I don't really use dynamic or "ducking" delays.
Hey Shawn can you help me out? I'm trying to decide on an amp thats going to be my number one amp for as long as possible. I play blues, rock, and like really clean to crunch to super 80's type gain. I like the idea of a combo or something really portable that can be played at bedroom volumes and also over my loud drummer. Price isnt much of any issue right now so Ive been looking at the new Carr Mercury V, Kemper, Friedman Runts etc.. If there were a 20watt Friedman BE-100 Id die for that haha. Im kinda leaning towards tube amps but I know Kempers are amazing. I guess what Im asking is if you know of somehing that Ive described or any advice as to picking one??
Well I'm not sure how much help I can be to you because it's such an individual thing. I can tell the amps I'm into right now. The Divided by 13 FTR 37 is a fabulous amp! More of a Fender thing. I have yet to procure one but the Friedman Dirty Shirley is another. It's more of a Marshall JTM style amp. There are so many great amps anymore! The modeling stuff is great but when I think desert island amp i think tube amp. I'm kind of a fan of one channel amps with pedals. Sounds like you dig channel switching amps. I wonder if you couldn't get Dave to build you a lower wattage BE type amp? That would be cool.

Honestly I'm not sure that he does Spencer but if money isn't an issue it's worth at least asking! I don't know that he would build you a 20 watt version but he might have some ideas on how you might achieve the BE 100 sound at a lower volume. Otherwise yes by all means look at the D13 stuff and maybe take a look at the Suhr Hedge Hog as well. It's a pretty great sounding amp that gives you some gain stage options as well.

What?? I was super close to buy a Truetone VS OX - or maybe the Jekyll & 'Hide but none of those are on your pedal board????? ok I'm not getting it then :-O
Haha! That bigger board doesn't exist anymore. I took it apart with plans to rebuild but just haven't got around to it. Most of the pedals I use on a regular basis are on my small board. I swap those out quite a bit depending on what I'm doing.
Cool! I'm still revising your vids with double drives/dists. What a tough small decision!! :-p
What are you trying to achieve via OD?
Hi! Thanks for replying. Basically nothign to harshy. More on the thick, chonky drives for alternative rock / brit pop ballads. Some mid beat rhythms, which would require a bit tighter approach on the OD, and for meaty, breaking edge finger picking. If soloing then bluesy with big body tones becasue I cannot play any fast so I play just melodic lines along. . I'd like to switch from one tone to the other in a song, and to have a couple of tweaking options. :-/ - I hope I said something sensemaking :-p.
I would check out the Rockett Pedals Majestic and maybe some of the Way Huge stuff.
Yes, but why are you pointing off screen at your feet when talking about your board? I notice that a board appears at 1.16 mins as an image on the right, but no little arrows or other indicators to show what you're talking about or referring to. So, you need to do some more post recording editing of your video.
