Inspired to by play guitar by his 6-stringing father, @ShawnTubbs emerged from the Christian-music scene. By his late teens, he was doing club and session gigs, and became part of The Violet Burning. In 1992, he played with Stone Temple Pilots on an episode of MTV Unplugged, then got deeper in the high-profile Nashville session scene, and began touring with Carrie Underwood.
He’s since stopped road-tripping in favor of the studio, where he’s a first-call player and his credits include recent work with David Crosby. The 30-year-veteran guitarist’s current album, Demolition, A Collection of Short Jams, can be heard on SoundCloud, and he’s got a popular CZcams channel, but you can hear him demo is own gear in this Rig Rundown, filmed at his home studio.

He's a walking guitar legend AND Pantene commercial
So luxurious and that Les Paul is pretty nice too!
😂 the hair
LOL 🤣😂
Rig Rundowns series is the best, you can get such up close insights about your favorite players. John Bohlinger is such a chill and lucky dude.
I couldn't Agree more. Rig Rundown's and Pedalboard-builds are (by-far) my Favorite. I could watch-em . . . all day. oNe LovE from NYC
John is phenomenal, isn’t he🙏🙌👏
Shawn, what a humble and class player. I enjoy watching his channel grow as people realize what a great player he is. I wish I had neighbors like him.
Thanks very much!
I'm glad that Shawn gets the recognition he deserves! Monster musician!
You're very kind, thank you.
"I wanna play through a bunch of glass"
Shawn Tubbs - 2022
Shawn is just the absolute best!
You're due for a Rundown!!
@@premierguitar Lets do this thing
Super cool Rig Run Down
Shawn has a style of his own. I could listen to him all day.
Using the Octaland as a boost😳 I’m gonna have to try that!
Sameeeee. Although when he brings the octave back in I’m not sure why it was ever off to begin with … 😂
It's kinda cool RJ! You'll make it sound better than I ever could!
I have a Fulltone Octafuzz that works great that way.
Two of the best musicians around and absolutely 2 of the nicest happiest guys ever... neither stop smiling very often 🤘😁🎸🎶✌️
Thanks so much Eric!
@@ShawnTubbs you're very welcome my friend... Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you
Woa... 2 legendary session player talking gears and guitars for an hour. Let me make my coffee and snack first ☕
Man, how clean and pristine sound and what a player. Best sound capture rig rundown ever.
Yes. Shawn is one of my favorite players. And I love watching him in his home studio tracking. Seeing all his gear is really cool. I like to watch his process in his show.
Thanks so much for watching!
@@ShawnTubbs you bet man. I'm loyal. I try to steal as much of your outside stuff as I can
Awesome guitarist, teacher, expert tone smith and super nice person.
As always just ridiculously good playing and tone from Shawn! John you do a fantastic job on these rig rundowns as well!
Thanks so much Chris!
Shawn is literally one of my heroes, love seeing him doing all these vids on other channels as of late.
Thanks so much, Quincy!
Rich from Tyler here. Love you Shawn! In that guitar are the Super humbucker and the JTS5500s. Studio Elite HD. Also, we dig bent saddles. Must have been some other builder that doesn't like them.
Monster player and tone for days. Thanx for the Rig Rundown .
First time hearing Shawn Tubbs.
*WOW* what a player.
Thanks so much!
Shawn’s tone is so good. John should start doing a Home Rig Rundown segment going to peoples houses. Maybe share some edamame over pedal collections.
That’s almost too personal??? But brilliant idea 🤘
Thanks so much!!
Awesome video. Loving my Tilt OD. Shawn is so humble and such a talented artist. He’s inspired me in many ways. We need a Demolition Pt 2!
Demolition Pt.2!!!
Listening to JB and ST talk guitars is just a pleasure. Great vid.
Great rundown. Shawn is such a beautiful player, and i really enjoy listening to him talk about stuff. John of course is absolutely THE MAN with rundowns, with a wealth of professional experience in all sorts of situations. Top drawer. 👍👍
Thanks so much!
Outstanding interview! Shawn is one of my favorite guitarists of all time! Great interview, John! Wish you guys would have jammed a little!!
“It’s my Tyler, so my Tyler is gunna be my Tyler cuz it’s SUCH a Tyler.”
Hell yeah. I heard my sister say that when she was dating in the late 90s.
You rule Mr. Tubbs. One of my all time favs.
This man is the Humble King 👑 There are some great players and maybe equal in their own right, but there is no one better than Mr. Tubbs. This is an absolute🙏
Wow, what a great rig rundown, so glad I came across this, even tho 9 days late! Shawn has been one of my very favorite guitarists ever since I came across his pedal demos some years ago. Fantastic player, and always gets such beautiful tones. But in this video, the sounds from about 49:20 to 49:49 are truly out of this world and cosmic!
Thanks so much! I was channeling Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno!
Shawn Tubbs has the mightiest hair game in the history of Rig Rundowns
I was very jealous behind the camera filming this one alongside Perry ... Shawn was taunting me!! Love Shawn and his playing 🤣❤
Nope....Doug Aldrich!🤘🏻
@@jacko717 too much hairspray, his hair moves like a helmet. Doug is a great player, seems like a great guy.....but his hair game is weak.
@@jacko717 Doug's ain't his.
Great Rig Rundown guys! I totally agree with Shawn on the vintage bent saddles, I put them on all my strats too.
Thanks for watching and chiming in!
Simply GREAT. John is a master of getting the best out of people and Shawn is such a Boss and Gentleman.
Thanks so much!
35:20 That Pedal Show changed everyone's lives too, Shawn
When Bohlinger says "oh wow that's bangin" I take it from him mainly because he's a gun slinger himself .He's being real ,he's being genuine.
Drinking Game...I took a swig from a cup every time Shawn touched his hair...never been so drunk in my life, and I was drinking Diet Coke. Actually, it's just hair-envy on my part...Shawn's awesome.
As good as anyone out there,is this man. Great playing
Great video! I truly enjoyed watching start to finish!
Thanks so much for watching!
Top notch. So happy to see this review/rundown John and Shawn. Thank you so much, Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much! I hope you and your family have had a great holiday season!
@@ShawnTubbs yes and for you too man!
Very true about dialing in your tone for the band. Shawn also has the best hair flip in the industry.
Love Shawn Tubbs! What a great player and a nice dude!!
Thanks so much!
What a cool dude and great player. And 100% right about playing by yourself with a darker tone and then needing to make adjustments in a band setting. Far too many guitar vids get great tones solo, but playing in an ensemble is a totally different beast.
Thanks so much!!
Shawn is one of the classiest players out there. Very understated and pocketed......... Until he steps out. Incredible player. Thanks for the insight PG/John!
Thanks so much, you're very kind!
Wow. Great rig run down. I’ve seen many of these rig run downs but got so much out of this one. Shawn’s thoughts about how to stack boost and overdrive was an eye opener. And that pedal board, especially the switcher, is a game changer.
Thanks so much for watching!
That’s the best sounding Les Paul I’ve ever heard
This was awesome, Shawn. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Happy New Year!
Great episode!
Both are awesome guitar players !
Time for a scrunchie Shawn!
Outside of the 2 consummate professionals running this ship…
Premier Guitar… THANK YOU. thank you for doing this, thank you for putting the time and effort and manpower into researching the gear and tones that make our favorite music come to life.
Y’all have saved me from a couple of ledges. And I’m sure I’m not the only
one. Cheers 🍻
Glad to help!
Thanks so much for watching!
Great rundown, thank you! You guys were talking about the Duesenberg and asking "what does this?" It reminds me of a Johnny A. Thinking that might sound similar. Fun stuff here!
I love that you guys have been interviewing people like Pete Thorn and Shawn who are known to the youtube community but might not be picked out of a lineup by the average concert-going crowd.
Shawn is a bit different as he came to the CZcams game later than most, as he retired from touring in about 2017/2018. 14 years with Carrie Underwood, Stone Temple Pilots before that etc
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words.
@@ncj7371 Thanks for chiming in!
Great to see this. Shawn is a big inspiration!
Thanks so much Nick!
Tasty player, I am always jamming along with his vids trying to glom onto his licks and style - SO great. This vid is now saved in my 'Guitar lick library' folder. Go check. Shawn is awesome
Thanks so much for the kind words!
This man is just a book of knowledge!
Legend interviews a Legend!🎸😳🎸😳🎸
Very informative! Great vid.
What a great session……so clear that these two guys really get along and are just guitar geeks hanging out and chewing the fat ……..we’re just privileged to be flies on the wall watching! 😎😎😎👍
Thanks so much!
I instantly want an HSS after this... never liked them but now I gotta have one! Monster player!
please, more of these amazing Nashville Cats!
Knowledge, expertise, passion-what a privilege to get to eavesdrop on this conversation.
Thanks so much for watching!
Great stuff! :)
I've been following Shawn since way back when he was playing guitar for the Promise Keepers conference praise band.
Thanks Jerry for the support, it means a lot!
Enough playing with your hair😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😂 😂😂
And his suppose to be"a pro".It must be the first time in front of a camera.
Though I do like watching these for the content & information I actually have no desire to sound like someone else in my playing.
👍 Nice video
Shawn is such a cool cat!!! And what a player!!!
Thanks!!
John, you did it again bro. I just discovered this such an incredible player. sweet guy too. however if he doesn't get a haircut he is gonna get crazy ha ha.
Oh this is gonna be a good one! Love Tubbs. And of course who better to do so than Bolinger!
Germany Guys - Lehle is from Germany...!!! 😀 - and they do great stuff (apart from the Volume Pedal).. - that aside, this was a great session and fun to watch, always been a fan of Shawn, his playing and Demos... - same for John!! You had a great time, that was obvious.. - more of that please..! Greetings from Germany; Markus
So just this morning I was doing the dishes...ha! but it is true. How the West was won came on via shuffle. I started thinking why is it the best tones ever came from the 60's, 70's and 80's? Back then they had no options, they just played through what they could get...at least in the 60's-70's. It seems like once gear became more nuanced and widely available in terms of options tones have never been as good to me. When you started talking about the 10 year cycle it reminded me of how I have come full circle from just amps to amps with pedals to rack gear to digital etc. I have now come full circle and prefer a Les Paul into a 100 watt Marshall. Practical indeed not but man, you can't replace that sound and feel. Not to plug a Rockett video but to my defense this particular product is no longer made, however, Shawn the vid you did for us for the Flex Drive using my Les Paul is still my favorite tone you have had on the demo vids you have done. Also your playing on that vid (opening song) was ridiculous. Glad you are getting the attention you deserve my friend!
Thanks so much, Chris!
It was time!
Time to do the rig rundown with one of the best!
You're very kind, thanks so much.
Man, the friggin intonation in the intro demo.....I didn't think guitars could actually get that in tune!
I have a Duesenberg Starplayer too, and it really is a different animal, like Shawn says. The string length effecting the tension, all that is dead on. It's so different from my other guitars, yet I connected with it, big time. I was expecting something somewhat similar to a Les Paul, but it's WAY different than that. I was fooled, but in the best way possible! Great segment. Shawn is an amazing player. BTW, I want that Dave Grissom PRS!! haha
Thanks so much! Yeah, that Duesenberg is such a cool guitar!
Great playing, very Mike Hermans (that's a VERY good thing)!
Fantastic interview and rig rundown. Bohlinger should do ALL rig rundowns. I could listen to these 2 cats chat guitars and tone for hours. Great stuff! God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Thanks so much for watching!
I have seen a lot of video's of Shawn the past weeks. But man, that hair must drive him insane in the end.
I'm growing it out so yeah, it's driving me a bit insane but it's just about long enough that I can start tying it back.
@@ShawnTubbs It looks great Shawn! Don’t give up on it. 😁
Man Tubbs is a monster player!
Thanks so much, Justin!!
i replaced my fender highway ones bridge with a brass bridge and saddles , later i replaced with the original bridge and saddles the bent steel just seems right for a strat even with the annoying threaded screws sticking out
I "play" guitar, not very well, but it makes me happy... until I see guys like Shawn Tubbs. Then I just want to sell it all. And he's such a nice guy. I can't wait until puts out his record.
Thanks so much, you're very kind!
Okay hear me out... a drinking game every time Shawn messes with is hair haahaa. I kid. This is such an awesome video. Such a fan of Shawn and his playing. Cool to hear the story with these guitars.
It looks like an Historic Makovers job from their shop in Florida
Agree
new drinking game. we take a shot everytime shawn flips his hair. kidding. thanks for the video.
Nice.
Gr8 video & content...
Thanks for watching!
Shawn is such a cool cat. What a unique player with great chops and killer tones to boot. What cables are you using Shawn?
the hair!
Great player totally friendly guy and John’s interview first class as always. Had to stop watching at 18.20 because of the hair thing! Man that’s crazy. Kept on listening to it like a podcast👍🏻
Yeah.
They call him Mr. Tubbs.
🤘🏽REVV Rules 🤘🏽
That first Suhr, the white one, has to be the most elegant guitar on this rundown.
I would be willing to bet that his R9 was redone by "HIstoric Makovers" who do incredible work.
They are the ones that did Bonamssa's Lazurus" 1959 Les Paul.
I think his hair is getting in his way
Man I'd have to tie it back or whatever.
Radius Suhr Classic Antique 9-12☝️
49:20 reminds of the album intros of Eric Johnson
Every time he adjusts his hair, take a shot.
Woul,d love to hear of Shawn's influences. Chris Poland I would geuss as one.
Michael Landau, Steve Lukather, Larry Carlton, Phil Keaggy, Scott Henderson, John Schofield, and Django Reinhardt to name a few. Thanks for watching!
I feel like I’m in the basement of the Vatican looking at forbidden knowledge
Those Suhrs are awesome but the headstock??
Someone, please buy Shawn a hairband for Christmas.
John Bohlinger earns every penny he makes, and deserves more!
Yeah, John is a talented dude!
Hey dear, the Lehle stuff is developed and build till today in GERMANY.
About modding guitars and then getting rid of them: George Harrison's red Les Paul named 'Lucy' started as a sunburst w/Bigsby owned by the Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian (who also had a Goldtop). He sold it via a shop in NYC to Rick Derringer, who was with the McCoys at the time. Derringer had the Bigsby removed, the neck shaved and the sunburst stripped and replaced with red. But he didn't like the results so the shop put it up for sale...and Eric Clapton purchased it, then gave it to Harrison. I don't think we ever saw him using it with Cream, so possibly he purchased it with the intent to give it to George.
A while later, Clapton was in a car with Harrison on the way to the studio when the Beatle suggested he be a guest player on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. Clapton had no guitar with him, so he played 'Lucy'. That guitar remains in the Harrison family's collection.
Thanks so much for chiming in!!
