    XTS built me a board centered around the HX effects. all my analog drives are in the loops of the hx and the hx provides the switching and the effects. To avoid volume pedal issues i just use a mission expression pedal to control the volume inside the hx. Works great! Hope you have fun putting everything together!

    Finally upgraded from my beloved M9 to HX FX after 13+ yrs. So glad I did. I think you're really going to love it Shawn. Your brief run-through of the M9 was super helpful to me. I'd really love to see you do the same and hear your thoughts once you add the HX. To my ears, even the legacy FX sound *much better. I'm using the Dunlop mini vol. purely to save space and its been great. First heard of the Chime from you and love that pedal as well. Always appreciate your insights Shawn! Cheers and Happy Holidaze!

    Your vids helped me decide to get some J. Rockett pedals. I currently have the Rockaway as an always on (clean boost), the .45 set up just over the edge of breakup for a very light OD tone and then GTO in front of it (activating it to OD the .45 when I want an awesome rock sound that will cut through the mix)

    Dude you need to check out the Lehle volume pedal. I used to use EB volume pedals and they never lasted more than a year, either the cord or pot or something went bust. I switched to Lehle a few years ago when they came out and I couldn't be happier. No pots or cords to wear out, no lost high end and you can use it as a line driver with the 10db gain pot. You wont regret buying one!

    I think the drive pedals you are using sound great by the way. I also love the Bogner Burnley for higher fatter gain. Some say it’s a little dark. But I’ve had no trouble getting mine to cut through live. They clean up nice with the volume control too!
    I run mine into a Hamstead artist 60rt and it really sounds fantastic.

    Im running the Revivaldrive almost last in the chain as an always on pedal with low gain, this gives me the opportunity to switch between fender-ish and marshall sounds and push them with other pedals. This works great with all amps, since the only thing you have to do is adjust the eq on the Revivaldrive according to the amp you're currently using.

  • @silverdrive35

    Hi Shawn! Thank you for all the great and inspiring videos. You’re doing a fantastic job!
    If you haven’t already, you must check out the Greer Lightspeed, made in Athens Georgia. That pedal sounds amazing and sits right into the modern country genre in my opinion. I thought I was done searching for overdrives when I tried out my friends pedal a few weeks ago. It has a very dynamic and “airy” sound and doesn’t get too muddy or compact.
    Its more aggressive brother Southland is now next on my “to buy-list” and definitely worth to check out too. It kinda takes over where Lightspeed ends.
    If you try them out, let me know what you think!
    All the best and keep up the good work.

    Great video, Shawn! For Volume Pedals, the Mission Engineering VM-1 is very good. Never a problem with mine. A slightly shorter throw than a E.B. VP Jr,
    but no tone suck.

  • @97guitarzan
    @97guitarzan Před 4 lety

    When I use a volume pedal (which is off and on for me) I use an Ernie Ball vp jr 25k model, after dedicated buffer. I don't hear any tone loss wherever I put it in signal chain, providing all pedals are true bypass. The Vertex boost looks like a great open as well, with it's expression pedal input for use with volume pedal. You get a great tone whatever you use use...great playing!

    Shawn, my ultimate volume pedal is the Shnobel Tone-modded Ernie Ball VPJR! Built-in Bonifide buffer, 2 different signal loops, lifetime upgrades the the potentiometer and cable, and options for built-in Polytune 3 and 9v power outlets. Snhobel also does a Dunlop Volume X Mini mod. Best purchase I've ever made for a pedalboard.

    Love this video! It's so fascinating to see, out of all the great pedals you've demo'ed, which ones you choose to use for your own sound. I'm curious about the difference between the Dude and the HRM pedals, since both are Dumble-ish, but you seem to prefer the Dude. I thought the HRM sounded amazing in your demo! But I might be biased by more recent demos that I remember better. Since you obviously like J. Rockett drive pedals, how about the Flex Drive for higher gain? That demo also sounded amazing! (It's one of the videos I show people when I'm explaining that you're my favorite guitarist!) When you build the new board, please do another video.

    I love my Mission Engineering VM-Pro volume pedal. It’s active, doesn’t suck tone, has a tuner out, which means you’re not going through the tuner, and you can tune while playing. I wish (maybe they do) they had an Aero version, which has more pedal sweep, but I use the VM-Pro mainly for muting, using the guitar’s volume for tone shaping. I have it after my gains, before delays & reverbs, so I can do swells off I need to. Highly tweakable!

  • @officerockstar

    I've had a few compressors, including the Origin Effects Deluxe, and I ended up with the Walrus Audio Deep Six v3 as I found it to be in the nice middle ground between using it as a 'transparent' compressor and as a compressor 'effect'. I like it. They market it as being derived from the 1176 compressor but with the simple interface of a Ross of Dynacomp. Good luck.

    Shawn, I am currently using 2 Rockett Touch ODs. One is set for a mild bit of hair. The other is for more lead & high gain sounds. I think you are spot on with wanting the Origin Cali 76 comp. The ones I've heard sound fantastic, versitile, very consistent in tone. For high gain I think you might be remiss if you did not revisit LPD gain pedals. He does several. Looking forward to see and hear the new board.

    Hi Shawn, get onto the latest mini volume X pedal from dunlop - smaller footprint on your board. Also you can't go wrong with the Cali '76 - a superb piece of engineering, and what makes a point of difference, apart from sounding great, is the 'dry' pot to add the dry guitar signal to the compressed signal. Have you ever tried the Mad Professor Supreme o/d?? Love your playing and melodic approach to guitar improv. All the Best for 2020!

    Hey Shawn great video. Hey if you decide to go with the HX Effects something to think about is the standard power supply that comes with it. There are a couple ways to go to keep your pedalboard uncluttered. I use a Voodoo labs Mondo supply which has the 400ma outputs. I ordered a current doubler cable from Voodoo which supplies the needed current for the HX. It works great. You can also go with other power supplies on the market now which will supply the needed current for the HX Stomp or HX Effects. Just remember if going with a current doubler cable it takes two 400ma outputs.

    This is really useful, thanks Shawn. I’m redoing my board and I’ve been undecided about having my comp first (as I usually do) to putting it after my overdrive as suggested by many, and then there’s the issue of where the sfuzz goes. At the moment I’ve got Comp > tuner > Crybaby>SD1>MojoMojo>BMF Sisyphuzz > Flashbak mini > Marshall Reverb. The fuzz sounds fantastic on its own but I get a huge mid-hump (not a pleasing one) when I stack it with the SD1. It’s good fun experimenting though.

    The great thing about the Rockett pedals, to me, is that they seem to sound really good through small amps, uninspiring clean amps at lower volumes, as well as larger/louder high-end amps. I think you can fit 6 on a pedal train nano, maybe with a slight overhang, gotta love the top jack. I think I had six once with a one spot daisy chain and it worked fine. They take batteries too so if so when someone nicks your wall watt or you break or forget it you can run on batteries. I’m They’re extremely durable. Also, the nano with six of these doubles as a weapon: if someone tries to steel my guitar and amp I can pop the Nano off of my gig bag and bludgeon them if need be. They sound really good. Can have a lot of different tones in a compact space. Same on the volume pedals, and I’m a mediocre amateur. I break them and some seem to suck tone. I love them and hate them. Looking at running it through the vertex boost thing. The Cali 76 is awesome! I love the 1176’s...so good.

    Great video Shawn! For high gain, either the Revv G3 or the XTS Precision Multidrive.. We talked about this recently. I don't use a ton of gain either, so no distortion pedals, but the XTS is as close as I have gotten to a Lukather type tone. One thing I like about the XTS pedals I've tried, is for lead work, they sound fat and killer by themselves, and have no need to be stacked or pushed by another pedal. The Revv G3 is intriguing because it blurs the lines between OD and distortion, but I have not played one. For the volume pedal, the Lehle Mono Volume pedal, hands down. It's active with up to 10db of boost, ridiculously smooth taper, buffered out for the tuner, and dead quiet. Lehle makes top shelf equipment. It's expensive, but you won't regret it. It's worth it. Out of curisotiy, have you ever spent any time with the Wampler Euprhoria? Merry Christmas to you and your family!

    Between the GTO and the Dude (for higher gain), the GTO has more low mid thickness, but the Dude might be a bit clearer because it has less content in that part of the spectrum. Would to Dude cut better in a mix because it would stand out more from the bass? I'm sure whatever choice you make, it will have plenty of thought involved (and your ear is great at hearing what sounds good).

    Only two Volume pedal situations I can stand are to use the Vertex Boost with an expression pedal. However , I just switched to the Mission VM Pro with ultra sweep . Set the internal switch to buffer on, other two options off. I like the Mission as good or better than the Vertex Boost option ! Make sure to get a newer Mission VM pro with "Ultra Sweep " . I'm actually moving along in the decision process but coming up with the finances is a different story. ;) I've definitely settled on the idea of using a Lehle volume pedal and I'm leaning toward using an Eventide H9, Strymon TimeLine, and a Strymon Flint for verbs, delays, and mod. The Pettyjohn Chime MKII is going on the board for sure and the Rockett Pedals Majestic will most likely end up in the mix. I think I'm going to keep the Suhr Koji Comp as well. Still need to choose at least one more dirt box as well as an Octavia style pedal.

      @@ShawnTubbs Interesting, cheers for the response. I went for the HX Stomp for my mod/delays as the H9 only allows one effect at a time, and I also use the Flint. Check out the Mission Volume Pedals. Specifically the VM-PRO (Red one with switchable buffer). They make a million pedals but that one seems to be the one-solution for all.

    It's going to be interesting to see how you use the Stomp. I'm considering the Strymon Iridium for my amps and relegating my Stomp to effects only.

    • @ShawnTubbs
      @ShawnTubbs  Před 4 lety

      I don't think I'll use the HX as a modeler. I'm way too into my OX box but I'd be interested to hear what you end up doing as far as the Iridium is concerned.

    try the Thru-Tone modded Ernie Ball volume. He adds a buffer and strengthens the string. For comps, I have owned the Ego Comp previously and now the Cali76-CD for about 3 years. It is the one.

  • @lunarlabaudio

    I’ve had a really good experience with the 40th anniversary VPjr. It has a Kevlar string. I think ShnobelTone does some sort of mod to VPjrs called like an everlasting string or something.

    Revv G2/3 for gain? I was really impressed with both of those and the variety of tones they have. The EB mini volumes are really nice, I also have a Mission volume pedal that’s been indestructible. I’m with you Shawn, I have destroyed a lot of volume pedals but for me I always end up going back to EB.

    Wampler pantheon. Or rev 3 distortion. Im taking my pinnacle deluxe vs2 and tumnus deluxe off board and go with the wampler gearbox. You did a nice demo on it.

    @aarondurham75 Před 4 lety

    Shawn, your playing is inspiring, and I love your demos! Barber Electronics make two OUTSTANDING drive pedals: Direct Drive = high gain/British flavor
    Gain Changer = can be set for low gain and has a high gain option too. David makes FANTASTIC products. A fun “clean” octave pedal that is currently on my board is the Lovepedal Believe which stacks with overdrive and/or fuzz.

  • @frankgrocholski
    @frankgrocholski Před 4 lety

    Great video as usual Shawn!! Check out the Barber electronics Direct Drive for higher gain stuff. Really rich harmonic overtones. I'll send you a shot of my board, I currently have an old Budda wah, eb vpjr, tumnus (always on depending on amp), Dunlop Hendrix octivo, Direct Drive, Dude, archer, (all drives are running into the loop of HX effects for different placement of modulations)

    Such an awesome demo of your board. How does the majestic or 45 respond if you push it with a clean boost in front of it? Does it get overdriven madness or does the tone get mushy? Eg goes from ac/dc or zztop into the next level of gain.

    Hi Shawn, The Friedman BE-OD is a really versatile high gain pedal, my favorite! For Octavia stuff, try the new Fender The Trapper Dual Fuzz, I'm not a fuzz guy and this one is my main fuzz tone for now, just check Josh Smith démo!

    @BalconyMusicStudios Před 4 lety +1

    Hi Shawn , try the KTR Klon thats awesome pedal on its own and can be mixed with blue note or similar( vemuram jan ray MA or Lightspeed) that gives u probably the right amount of gain that you need ,and has a lot of headroom... i don´t play with lot of distortion, like you and in my first pedalboard my setup was pretty similar to yours... so i bet you gonna like it...

    In terms of the HX Fx Shawn, I'm a very happy Stomp user. It does everything REALLY well. The effects are really good (got Strymon, Empress and others in the past) and they stand of with those. The only thing I don't like is that it introduces a kind of High frequency (maybe due to ADA conversion) that changes a little bit the fundamental tone. As I said I'm a really happy user and it's something that doesn't bother me a lot, but If you haven't tried it, you should be aware!

    Man, such good tone man! Always so good! As far as the line 6 hx effects, I know that you can get some great sounds out of there, but I was disappointed by how digital it sounded. In my opinion you can get a lot more analog feel out of the Strymon Mobius!
    Lehle volume pedal all the way!
    High gain, try the Strymon Sunset dual overdrive! Killer sounds!

    • @justusmorales6135

      Also! If you scoot the pedals closer together you could fit the dude and the .45 on the board as well! That would be a J. Rockett Party!

  • @NicoSchliemann

    Regarding the volume pedal, you might try the one by Lehle (a german manufacturer), that’s an active and I guess optical one (so it’s basically not gonna break). I have one and love it

  • @jeremygueringerguitarandsa9826

    Also, what model is your pedalboard. The way it has a shelf or second level for your reverb and delay is really cool! I absolutely love watching and learning from you!

    Lehle Mono Volume Pedal is super accurate but is magnet based if you want trad 250k pot I'd go for Shins Perfect Pedal or A3 Custom both built like tanks w no dampening of freq great throw and curve. Awesome vid man that Majestic and Pettyjohn are just nailing those tones

  • @Jesse_Johnson
    @Jesse_Johnson Před 3 lety

    @shawntubbs Im sure this has been said in the comments. A vertex Boost pedal and any volume pedal. The boost is a clean boost but also acts as a volume pedal via expression. Meaning you have control over your volume whether or not the pedal is engaged. And no tone suck because your signal never enters the volume pedal!! Just a thought! Stay well.

    Hi Shawn. Great video as always! Two questions for ya 1) What are you powering your board with? 2) What patch cables and instrument cables are you using? Maybe when you do your new board unveiling you can walk us through that stuff too 👍🏽

    • @ShawnTubbs
      @ShawnTubbs  Před 4 lety

    I’ve really thought a lot about the HX Stomp. I could use the Stomp to replace my 2 TC delays. I don’t look forward to programming patches.
    Maybe you should just give in and put all those ROCKETT pedals on the board.
    That’s really good choice on compressors. You have some great pedals already.
    After all, we live in the “golden age of pedals.”

    Great Vid Shawn. To tell you the truth, as amazing as your ears are I’m not sure I could give you much input. I do have a Origin Effects Revival Drive Compact coming today. I use to have the bigger Revival Drive but I was just too overwhelmed with it. It sounded great but tweaking was a nightmare for me. I’m hearing the Compact sounds great and is a very manageable pedal. My Volume pedal is the Tapestry Bloomery pedal. I’ve had many volume pedal but this one has a nice long throw and is a thinner pedal and doesn’t take up a lot of space on your board. Also has a nice feel to me and works great for my needs. Hope this helps and I’ll let you know how the Revival Drive Compact works out for me. Pairing it up with a Greer Lightspeed, so I’ll see. God bless
