Warren G and Nate Dogg sampled this song in Regulate. This came out in the early 80s. His voice is very distinctive, and he sings backup vocals with so many other artists, and his voice is instantly recognizable. Great reaction.
I'm still embarrassed 💯 to this day for how deeply I loved Regulate and never heard this first!
@@scottallencarr, well I’m probably older than you, and remember it. Regulate is a GREAT song, too, though.
@@Tuesdays_Gone I'll shout to that! One of the first songs I had the cojones to throw at karaoke!
The Doobie Brothers, maN!🔥
Love this song
I love seeing the lightbulb moment from rap fans when hearing this song for the first time 🥰
Me too!!
😅 exactly!
Or when we heard the first rap version. I love hip hop and had a big smile the first time I heard regulator
@@2steaksandwiches665 yep it was sampled from white boys, deal with it.
Me too this song and beat really hits a chord
It`s great that you actually check out the comments...Michael McDonald just has a great unique voice. When you hear him, you just know its him. Check out his duet with Patti Labelle "On My Own". Very Nice.
I was going to suggest that too!
Regulaterrrrrrrrrs, MOUNT UP!
And the bass line IS EVERYTHING. Got some stank on it jack!
Funny enough, they recorded the song separately and didn’t hear the finished product until well afterwards. The same goes for the video. They were in opposite sides of the country for both.
He has one of the best voices of all time in any genre.
Best voices of ANY generation!!❤️
You're listening to his voice because that's the most special instrument in this whole band.
You know his voice from The Doobie Brothers and everyone who was anyone had him singing back up on their music in the 70s. Steely Dan (Peg ) , Christopher Cross (Ride Like The Wind ) Stevie Knicks and Kenny Loggins just to name a few . This dude is a badass singer . Always has been . Check out What A Fool Believes from the Doobie Brothers. He wrote this riff and Warren G sampled it
You beat me to it. I was looking to see if anyone told Van that he was the lead in The Doobie Bros
Someone did tell him already - that’s how he got the recommendation to do this song.
Check out the scaled down version of What a Fool Believes with him and Kenny Loggins.
@@brynneholt1990 Ted Templeman produced most of the Doobie Brothers’ hits with Michael McDonald for Warner Brothers Records.
I don't think you'll find a more humble individual in the music industry than Michael McDonald, that's as impressive as the talent the man has!
Greg Phillinganes, Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro of the band Toto played the clavinet, guitar and drums on this song. Michael McDonald did lead vocals, electric piano and synthesizers. Maureen McDonald sang backup and Louis Johnson from the r&b band The Brothers Johnson played the bass guitar.
Why am I not surprised that Lukather is on this track?
'On my Own' with Patti Labelle is an absolute reaction song!!!
yep and I'm sure the same room was used for the vidio clip, that table by the window looks familiar.
True!!
The voice, the hair, the beard, the eyes...that man has set many hearts aflutter over the years. The hair is white now but those eyes are still blue & bright & he still sounds great. Hearts are still aflutter.💙
Did you know he had a hit song with Patti Labelle? "On My Own". You might recognize that one.☮
He has to watch "On My Own".
AMEN! He's STILL beautiful to me & his voice will never get old!
White hair or not he is still sexy!
Blue Eyed Soul personified. Sweet Freedom is another great song that he sung.
He can still get it!!!! (2022)
Van, now you have to hear: Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald - On My Own
That’s a good one, Sweet Freedom is a banger too
My grandma probs told me he was from the Doobie Bros when she bought this 45, but I probs forgot lol.
Definately.. I love that duo.. they both got so much soul..
Oh, Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhh!
❤
You heard that right. The song Regulate used a sample of "I Keep Forgetting"!
This song never gets old👍❤❤
He is one of the greatest singers ever!!!!!! And bro he has a voice all his own, nobody sounds like him!!!!!!
I think Michael has sung with everyone. He and Kenny Loggins are great together.
Kenny has always been a favorite of mine
No he hasn't sung with me...
Blue eyed soul brother wow
Ok, first off, this was recorded and released in 1984, a whole 8 years before Warren G's Regulator. So Warren G used this sample! Love the channel! Also love the Montreal Expos hat!
Fall 1982, 12 years before Regulate(1994)
Listen to patty LaBelle and Michael McDonald sing On My Own like someone else said. Crazy good. Love the 80s music and Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers. Danced many nights away listening to this crazy good music.
Michael McDonald has such a distinctive voice. You know it’s him when you hear it. The instrumentation is banging as you said😁
Not only did he sing with the Doobie Brothers, he also laid down some tracks with Steely Dan.
Michael McDonald tore it up back the day
I LOVE watching younger people discover music from my generation. It keeps the music alive through time.
He also sang with Doobie Brothers in the 70's/80's, some funky music ("What A Fool Believes" is GREAT). He also had a duet with Patti LaBelle "On My Own". Check out Hall and Oates "Sarah Smile", I think you like that smooth R&B type jive.
The other instrumentalists in this song are the band TOTO. They were all very famous studio musicians. You can hear them on hundreds of records from the 70s and 80s and on alot very famous songs from people like Diana Ross, Madonna, and Earth Wind and Fire. They were also the musicians for the entire Michael Jackson Thriller albulm minus the solo from beat it which was Eddie Van Halen. They also had their own hits including Africa and Rosanna. You should definitely check them out.
Michael McDonald has such a unique voice. This is a great song. You have already discovered the wonderful Doobie Brothers and hopefully you will check out Steely Dan. I will bet my left kidney (I got that from you😂) that you will absolutely love them. Their production is always top notch! I would never steer you wrong, Van! Another great reaction 🌺✌️
The Great Louis Johnson of The Brothers Johnson plays Bass on this song (R.I.P.). Michael McDonald's sisters normally sing background and accompany him on his songs as well
Michael McDonald has a unique voice that sounds deep but high at the same time.
I have had a mad crush on Michael McDonald for years not just his voice but his looks And he has swag
You need to check out his duet with Patti Labelle -- "On My Own". Trust me!
You know his voice from when you did a Doobie Brothers reaction. He was one of the lead singers for that band.
Every "new" song I hear sounds like an "old" song made at a time when talent and creativity was the driving force.
This song is one of the smoothest song ever! Yes, it was sampled in Regulate. Another song you should react to is The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby and the Range....you won't be disappointed!
I have heard this song hundreds of times and seen the “video” ( pre videos) and only now realized that is Stevie Nicks singing with him. I never paid attention to her face but her voice was driving me crazy. lol wow
I’ll be 50 in September and I’m on a nostalgia trip with these songs
From what my fading memory can recall, it is his sister doing background vocals. The woman in the video does somewhat resemble Stevie. Great song, great era in music.
Van, you can react to MORE Michael MacDonald by actually reacting to two other Legendary artists that I don't think you have reacted to yet; React to Christopher Cross's "Ride Like The Wind" (a CLASSIC) and you can hear Michael MacDonald bringing his heat to the background vocals 😊. Also, MacDonald often sang background vocals for my FAVORITE group, STEELY DAN, and you can hear him on one of their biggest hits, "Peg"; I guarantee both reactions would get a TON of likes 💖
I meant to suggest this song, but kept forgetting. 😁
It's like sweet incense and silk had a baby! This is an incredible song given life by an incredible singer. Thanks for sharing!
He has a duet with Patti Labelle and it started all kind of discussions.
Hey Van! Great reaction. Michael McDonald is iconic. Check out "ECHOES OF LOVE" by The Doobie Brothers. Also, "YAH MO BE THERE" MICHAEL MCDONALD and JAMES INGRAM...AWESOME!
McDonald was the absolute definition of blue eyed soul. Smooth as fine Scotch. You should check out the song Sweet Freedom from the movie Running Scared. It's like an anthem to everything good and joyful (and the movie is excellent, too, with the late great Gregory Hines).
💯❤️
"Round" is a great description of his voice, Van.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for listening
Michael MacDonald's duet with Patti Labelle "On My Own" is a real jewel too, a great pairing of voices.
The band behind this were 🔥🔥! Michael speaks, well sings, for himself.
You always make me appreciate the music I love even more after watching you’re reactions💜
His voice is so recognizable...
maybe cuz that voice has been on million hit songs ✌😎
Patti LaBelle - On My Own (Official Music Video) ft. Michael McDonald - you would LOVE this !!
"Regulator! Regulator! That's what this is! This is from Regulator, that's what this is! Yea" --- your funny Van.
I am smiling watching van enjoy the music that I am also enjoying . Don’t that found crazy ? Why am I grinning because someone else is vining off this track 🤣🤣🤣
That’s his sister on backing vocal
Brother got some SOUL!
On long car trips, just play the Michael McDonald game, where you sing every song as if it were sung by Michael McDonald. It's a little known [and lesser used] technique for vocal training
Do Patti LaBelle ft Michael McDonald song "On My Own"
Handsome and talented. What a great combination! Keep up the good work! I look forward to seeing you and Queen every day 👍
I saw it on your face as soon as you heard it! This was used in Regulate. I bet you have heard his voice in his duet with Patti Labelle "On My Own." It was popular when we were kids. This man has sung with everyone.
This is old school smoooth!! The bass line and rhythm guitar that is laid down in this is something else!
I saw Michael McDonald live at a free Outdoor Concert in Allen,Tx and he could Not hit that High Note anymore. He's in his 70's and he sang for 2.5 hours impressive
Iconic voice!!
Yep, Nate Dogg and Warren G sampled this on Regulate.👍👍💕💕
Michael McDonald sang lead for the Doobie Brothers. He sang lead on "Takin' to the Streets". The Doobie Brothers made a guest appearance on the TV show "What's Happening". That's one of the songs they sang in concert on the show. Check it out. I think you'll like it.
The female background singer is Maureen McDonald, Michael's sister.
This is where Dr Dre got the sample for Warren G - Regulators
Michael McDonald was signed to Motown so no accident that others on their label might sample his music.
I'm always surprised how little of michael is reacted to on youtube. I love how you notice all the little things the first time around that took me dozens of listens to find. I appreciate you
He sounds familiar because he had hits sol, duets, with Doobie Brothers, session artist with Steely Dan and back up artist to others....check out On My Own duet with Patti Labelle
Actually Warren G sampled it from Michael McDonald and you may of heard his voice from when he was the lead singer in the Doobie Brothers.
Dude what do you mean "I can't sing"?! As a vocalist, allow me to inform you, you CAN sing. That was great!
Thank you RT!!!
You're right. It's easy to get distracted by his amazing voice, but the song is funky as hell. The bass line, the keys. That bass riff at the end...understated but Funky with the big F!
I love your reactions so much. You take songs I've heard so many times and give me a new perspective. My mom loved Michael McDonald and I heard this song so many times when I was a kid. So, I recognized it instantly when Regulate came out (I was 19) and I loved how it was reworked into hip-hop. I haven't listened to this in years and your observation of how brilliant the production is had me listening to this song on a deeper level. Almost like listening to it the first time again. I also love your description of his voice as round. Yes! I hadn't thought about it like that. New ways of thinking about a song/singer makes me so happy and I love your reactions for that reason. "This joint bang bangs" is so right. It certainly does bang BANG.
I think you would enjoy reacting to the live version of the song....Yo MO Be There with Michael McDonald and James Ingram. Michael is so talented and performed with many, many other
artists, he another legend. Love your reactions as always.🫶🎤🎶👍❤️
This song features the guitarist & drummer from Toto. 2 of the most sought after session players back in the day
Fun facts:
1.Michael McDonald played for the Doobie brothers for a hot minute while their band lead was going through some health things before branching out solo.
2. The music track was performed by Greg Phillinganes(keys), Steve Lukather (guitar) and Jeff Porcaro(drums) of TOTO. Those musicians are Studio Session Musicians first, then TOTO so you probably heard their backing in a ton of songs from the 70's, 80's and some 90's including quite a few Michael Jackson Songs including Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature, PYT to name a few.
3. Yup, Warren G did indeed has taken samples from this song, Sign of Times - Bob James, Let me Ride - Dr. Dre, and Dialogue from the Movie Young Guns to make Regulate.
If you are 40+ years old, you've heard this song growing up on the radio.
The Music and Groove are Straight HOT & FUNKY!
Michael's sister on backup vocals.
Check out Michael McDonald and James Ingram, "Ya Mo B There" (1983). You've heard Michael with the Doobie Brothers. He's sung with other groups and performers as well. His voice is unmistakable and amazing!
He’s the backing vocal with Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, Patti On my own that I can name.
Like you said, the performance of the studio musicians so on point. That and the mix/production. Every instrument is perfectly in the pocket. Nobody stepping on each other’s toes. And super tight rhythm. And this was before Pro Tools where you can time-align any flubs.
Oh, I DO love Michael McDonalds voice! Always did, always will,,,,Thank You!
Amen! Me too! 🥰👍
FYI, guitar and bass on this joint are by The Brothers Johnson (Stomp, Strawberry Letter)
This guy is one of the few white artists that’d be played on NYCs most famous Jazz and R&B radio station, WBLS. He and Hall & Oates ♥️
On the instrumental: Part of the reason it’s poppin so funky, first is Michael’s affection for soul r&b funk. Then to surround himself with cats like the late Louis Johnson of Brothers Johnson (Stomp & Strawberry Letter 23), who also was bassist on Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall & Thriller Albums. Although not originally formally trained, Louis became a 1st call in-demand studio session bassist, & aside from his pocket groove, his thumb & pluck funk technique, originally heard with Larry Graham. Another components on this track are the late Jeff Porcarro, & guitarist Steve Lukather, whose rhythm line you pointed out in your reaction. They’re both from the band Toto. Steve’s funky work was also heard on the Bee Gee’s Stayin Alive, from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, another song sampled by hip hop artists. Your hip hop generation ears pointing out the guitar line confirms how a funky poppin rhythm guitar can be like a magnet for hip hop artists to Anna put some bars on top. Fun reaction! 👍🏾
One of the best song reactions I've seen. Unlike a lot of music reacters, you notice all the musical intricacies and not just the singing. This is a masterful track with some of the funkiest session musos in history. Absolutely loved your attention to detail and your funky friendly aura. Subscribed.
Brilliant song…m.mcd has so much soul
I remember when I was little, I used to sing this song so much! That and the song he did with Patti LaBelle. I would sing both all the time. Then I found out he was white, when I was little I thought he was black. Blew my little kind mind that a white person could have so much SOUL. That also made me realize that... soul wasn't about race, it was a feeling you had. Mind you, being young I wasn't aware that he was from the Doobie Brothers, although I had heard some songs from them!
@ LFR FAMILY...
One Word sir to describe Mike's voice...SMOOTH
I just discovered today that the female backing vocalist in this song is Maureen McDonald, Michael's sister.
This that music granny would put on Saturday mornings when it was time to clean the house
I don't know how everyone sleeps on REAL LOVE by THE DOOBIE BROTHERS
but that's my favorite McDonald era song... REAL LOVE...I NEED TO BELIEVE IN.
Please check out Michael McDonald and Patti Labelle " On My Own ". Michael's sister Maureen is the backup vocals on " I Keep Forgettin.
Michael is special and im glad you learned it too....just because we know its true and we can't forget man 😅
Since this was first, Warren G sampled this. Respect.
Exactly. Michael Mcdonald was first.
If you break down the people who came together to play the instruments for MM, find out their previous experiences, you'll find other bands and/or performances that you've likely heard before and that you will probably also enjoy. Like, the Drummer.....he was in the band TOTO. They have great songs, great sounds and lots of groove.
Love the fact your boy picked up on the instrumentals not just “the voice”. Two greatnesses converge
Thisis a familiar song from my younger days...All over the radio...Now I would expect to hear it in the grocery store...
I left you more solo Michael songs on the bottom of my long list of Doobie Brothers songs. One of the most recognizable voices in all of music.
U cant go wrong with Michael McDonald..esp this timeless masterpiece "l keep forgetting"!!....u do him honour to appreciate it bro!..👍👍👌...and yes Regulator was sampled from this!
Wow!!!! I never thought I’d see an expo’s hat again!!! Very cool, I used to go on Sundays and watch a game.
This Montrealer loves your Expos cap ❤ . I also love that folks now know where Regulate was sampled from :) It shows how musicians of all genres respect and appreciate each other.
You know why the instrumentation sounds so great? The legend Jeff Porcaro on the drums. Steve Lukather on guitar. Greg Phillinganes on keys. All of them were all over Michael Jackson’s Thriller album too. Jeff and Steve were members of Toto. Legends.
and louis johnson on bass
The girl singing is his sister!!!
My favorite song by him was Minute by Minute.
BOBBY CALDWELL "WHAT YOU WON'T DO FOR LOVE"...A MUST HEAR CLASSIC.
