Secret Stimulants of the Vietnam War: How Drugs Forged an Unstoppable Soldier...

  • August 1964. US President Lyndon B. Johnson has inherited an ongoing crisis in the south-east Asian nation of Vietnam from his predecessor, John F. Kennedy. The crisis involves the spreading of communism from North Vietnam into the south and potentially beyond, threatening the US position in the region against the Soviet Union in the Cold War. At first, he adopts the policy of training and equipping the South Vietnamese Army to fight the war themselves but when a US warship is attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, he and his government feel the fight now requires more direct involvement.
The US military complex was unlike any other on the planet in 1964. Large and highly sophisticated, it was believed that it could achieve any objective put before it and yet in Vietnam, this technical marvel was forced to get down in the mud to fight its enemy. This led US leaders to look back at improving the most valuable piece of equipment at their disposal - the US soldier. Science offered the possibility of giving the US trooper greater endurance, strength, aggression against the enemy and protection from the stresses of war. This was the era of the drug-enhanced super soldier but as history would prove it would come at a cost. This is the story of how the Vietnam War would become the Pharmacological War.

Admittedly its not the main point of this excellent video, but you may want to review your description of the Gulf of Tonkin as the reason for the war’s outbreak. Its generally accepted that much of the incident was fabricated and the rest exaggerated, to provide the US with a pretext for escalating the war they were already engaged in …..presenting it as an act of defence whereas the opposite was the case, as proven through access to declassified official documents and rigorous examination by accredited historians.

This is such a niche topic, btw there is a video somewhere of GI's smoking pot outta a shotgun, in the firebase, Dexedrine was given by the army though to what extent is unclear, I am sure there were officers that stamped down on that stuff especially while "in the bush", actually one story was told of a GI who almost got his ass kicked because he lit up a doob while on the trail, heroin was apparently very cheap around 5$G and was no. 4 China which meant it could be snorted instead of smoked or shot making it no different that a hit of cocaine to some which was less harmful than a cup of coffee and made you feel instantly better, thats one thing I'm unclear on is how much coca soldiers went through, if any, I always sort of thought some would have it shipped from home but I could be wrong.

The mortuary services were shipping heroin back smuggled in body bags & coffins containing the bodies of dead soldiers.
This was a huge smuggling route that went on for years right under the noses of certain officials.
The dead were shipped to Dover,Delaware and the smuggled drugs was shipped from there to major hubs and distribution networks to be sold throughout the continental United States. 💉

Our gov't has done a great job demonizing drugs...but the reality is, some people legitimately need certain drugs seen by the majority as "taboo..." because they work. The Sumerians referred to the poppy as "the flower of joy," not the "flower of pain relief." There's a reason for that. Opioids actually work for treatment-resistant depression, even long-term...but our gov't / the DEA has decided that any drug that causes you to "feel good" is inherently bad. The great irony is that the one legal drug - alcohol - is considered the most dangerous drug in the world by WHO and other orgs, and has been for years. We're still losing more ppl annually to alcohol-related health issues (not even counting alcohol-related crashes / killings) than to fentanyl. In 2024, we're on track to see over 130k deaths from alcohol-related health issues like cirrhosis. But funny how they keep highlighting the drug epidemic while we televise ads for alcohol, presenting it as a substance that brings people together for care-free fun. Alcohol is the worst drug and for some reason, we chose to make that the acceptable substance of use / abuse. Prohibition doesn't work - didn't work for alcohol and we've effectively lost the "war on drugs..." drugs won. People have been using drugs since the dawn of man - that will never change. Bodily autonomy includes far more than female reproductive rights. I'm certain our founders would've included something concerning the right to decide what we put in our own bodies if they'd have thought the gov't would criminalize such rights in the future. We need to legalize 95% of drugs (with very few exceptions) and tax them at 30%. The taxes alone would pay for detox, rehabs and outpatient treatment / social services for those wanting sobriety. Plus, legalization would bring in quality controls, thus saving countless lives from accidentally taking counterfeit drugs. It would also cripple and bankrupt the cartels in less than a year. No one would buy their drugs when you could go down the street and buy whatever your heart desires - and it'd be high purity as it would be pharmaceutical-grade. It's just that our gov't makes far more off drugs being illegal - from everything to civil asset forfeiture for drug-related cases to the tens of thousands of jobs lost once the DEA is shuttered and all the police depts that would need to downsize from lost revenue and lowered crime. It'd also open up ~85% of the prison space for actual criminals. I guess actual, full legalization just makes too much sense for our gov't to employ. It's worked in other countries...the data is there for anyone interested in reviewing it. Legalization with a ~30% tax to support treatment / recovery / social services on a national level would 100% work, and it'd be far more effective than criminalization has ever been. Legislating morality has never worked - it's just another form of governmental control and overreach.
