Today I'm going to review the #canon #sl3 (#250d 200d mk ii). The latest Canon entry level camera is the first Canon Rebel to offer 4k.
I’m going to review the SL3 for both photography and video and will be looking at the various features and functions it offers.
I’ll cover the SL3’s ergonomics, autofocus, sensor and processor, battery life, resolution, framerate, 4k, time lapse and a lot more!
I will also bring up some areas where I think Canon could have done a little better.

That technical explanation of 18mm lens cropped 1.6x because of the APSC sensor, then a further 1.6x to record at 4K to achieve an equivalent 46mm frame is the best thing about this video. You're awesome dude.

Hello, I'm an aspiring Filmmaker and was wanting to get the SL2 for my films, but when I watched this video, I don't know which one to get. Both the SL2 and the SL3 are pretty similar, the only difference being pricing. Which one should I get? Love the videos by the way

@@user-ez6ks5vo9p Unless you need the 24fps at 1080p, I'd get the SL3. The prices I am seeing now show that you will only save $50 by getting the SL2.
The sl3 for me was a great starter and backup camera. Since have acquired a c200 and r6 so I can use the same lenses mostly and have more choices and angles. We still use it in the field on live streams.

I bought it for my Wife and as an owner of 7D, 5D Mkiii and M6 Mk ii I'm very impressed. The single most disappointing lack of feature for me is the lack of a Custom option on the mode dial. Even just a single C1 would have been useful

Oh wow! I gotta say, I was stoked for the SL3, but the loss of 1080p/24fps is an absolute deal-breaker. I mean, I'm trying for that cinematic look! So I'll stick with my SL2 for now. (I don't need 4K; it's a nice-to-have, not a must-have.)

I have had a sl3 in my hands yesterday and played with the settings and it had fhd 25 frames 🤔
Yes, it does have 25fps, but not 24fps when shooting in 1080p/NTSC

I think I've decided going with the Canon SL3 as my first ever proper DSLR. I have a question : Is there a downside to shooting 25 fps in PAL instead of 24 fps in FHD for a cinematic look, since the latter doesn't exist. Even if I would need 24 fps (which I won't as I am a hobbyist, so no work requirements), can't I just export the 25 fps into 24 in my editing software ?
The issue is that if you live in an NTSC zone (like the US) then 25fps may give you light flickering because of the frequency the electricity is served here. Other than that, you can shoot and export in 25fps and you won't be able to tell the difference.
Tech Gear Talk Thank you ! I have another question as well concerning the hot shoe functionality. I heard that Godox released a firmware update on their external flashes that make them compatible with the SL3 . Do you know if this has completely solved the problem and the flash works like it should or are there still drawbacks ?

My son wants a camera that would be good for him to get started with and one of the features he really wants is an articulating screen. I'm so glad you gave that feature such high praise. Maybe the battery is upgraded enough but I tend to sit down and film for a few hours and love the idea of bypassing batteries.

Your video are simply the best at doing explanations. I can’t believe that Cannon took the 24 Fps. It’s like the developers just took their common sense out to lunch during this phase of development. I am going to buy an SL 3 but hope and pray they do a firmware update to correct the 24fps. Thank you again for your informational video. Will I have to buy a Cannon flash as they have taken to center bottom away?

As far as the flash, I would get a Canon one, or at the very least, I would go to a store with my SL3 and make sure the flash I get works. What lens/es are you getting?

Thank you for this great information. I am confused about video recording size. I wonder if we can shoot a video 30 fps or 60 fps at 1080 with Canon SL3. I am quite new on these issues. 4K videos need more space than in 1080 on the laptop, especially when editing. Therefore, I don't need 4K. I only need 1080/30 fps or 60 fps. I wonder whether Canon SL3 has it. Thank you in advance.

@@TechGearTalk I got the 18-135 USM. I'm travelling soon so I needed a versatile lens. I had traveled with the kit and the nifty fifty before, and the Tamron 18-200 (but wasn't too impressed by that lens) so I got this setup. Thanks for educating us and keeping a relatable dialogue. So many experts sound too expertly, you know? :)

First let me tell you that I have been following you for a few months and your reviews are the ones i trust as I see that you really know your stuff. Although I'm not new to Photography I'm definitely at a beginner's level and I had been looking at the M50 for while but as I'm sure many people did, decided to wait for the Mark II to be launched but now I'm kind of undecided between the M50 Mark II and the SL3. Which one would you recommend considering I'm not a blogger and the truth is that I care more about Photography than Video?

Tech Gear Talk another source tells me if I have it plugged in for live streaming and have disabled auto shut off, it will stay on all day.....

Big shout-out from Cleveland! I love your pictures of Cleveland. Absolutely gorgeous. It's what inspired me to look into picking up this particular model in the first place. After doing about 2 weeks of non-stop research, I had to choose between the SL3 and the M50. It was an incredibly tough decision but I ended up going with the SL3 because I found a great deal on a new camera that I couldn't pass up. Also weighing in on my decision was also the fact that you had to buy a lens adapter to use regular canon lenses with the M50, and also having to remove the on-screen menu stuff when using the HDMI out on the M50.

Planning on getting the SL2 based on your ultimate review of it. The SL3 might have DIGIC 8 and 4k recording but i don't think i need any of that right now. Really hoping the price for the SL2 comes down though.

@@TechGearTalk I'm currently in India and the Canon 200d with lens kit is 43300INR(roughly 625USD) on amazon as for the 250d it isn't available here yet but even just importing it would cost an arm and a leg.
was gonna go for something much cheaper but i feel the 200d is exactly what i need as a beginner so I'll just have to save up for it.
That sounds like it makes sense to me. If you’re not live streaming, and want 1080p/24, the sl2 is a great option.

I loved this video! It's very informative and educational! I just bought my first Canon SL2 camera, to add to my collection; but I haven't tested it yet. I bought the SL2 to compliment, and as a backup camera to my Canon REBEL XS camera, even though I'm a NIKONIAN! But I do have a certain loyalty to CANON, since the first camera I owned was a CANON T50 back in 1987!

Thank you for this review, and I am really looking forward to your upcoming videos on the controls for the SL3. I have only ever used point and shoots and my cell phone camera, but after booking a bucket list trip to South Africa for December, I started looking for a better camera. Entry level is all my budget will allow (our trip was paid for with cc points) and I had decided on the SL2 when the SL3 was announced. Intro pricing made it the same price as the SL2 so I got it with the kit lens and also bought the 55/250 stm lens. I did not like the feel, battery life or function of the M50. Looking forward to learning to use this camera and will be watching lots of videos from your site. Thanks

Based on your wonderful review I recently purchased canon SL3 for video streaming and still photgraphy. Everything worked fine as per your review. But one problem cropped up and I wanted to place it on this platform. The recording function of the camera does not function when you live stream via a clean HDMI output. I hope this aspect will help bloggers.

Great video man. Really wanted to know the difference is not worth it plus the build quality of 200D is much better I think I'll skip for now and I will stick to my 200d I don't use 4k I use only 1080p for my CZcams videos but once again great video.

This is a sure sign that Canon has not given up completely on APS-C sensor DSLRs - a good thing in my view. Even though I already have a full frame sensor EOS RP, I'm buying one of these to use as a low-cost wildlife camera, paired with a stabilized Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 that I own. Since wildlife photos are almost always significantly cropped anyway, the SL3 will give me the "reach" of a 480mm lens, while allowing me to take full advantage of the 24MP resolution of its APS-C sensor. Because the RP set in crop mode does not use the entire sensor, it only provides about 10MP, resulting in significantly reduced resolution. Finally, unlike the mirrorless EOS M50, SL3 buyers could readily adapt their Canon EF/EF-S lenses if they decide to upgrade to Canon full frame mirrorless models in the future.

Thanks Sagi (name/spelling?). Now that Adobe is raising their subscription price for Lightroom, how about a video on some alternatives? I use PhotoScape Pro X. It works great, and is only US $40 for the full "pro" version.
I was in the same predicament as you a few months ago when I upgraded the 6dii to the EOS R, I'd personally go with the M50 if you want a B-cam, it's got everything the SL3 has and more. And because it's an M-mount camera, you can open up the smaller line of lenses which I've considered to be very useful during travel while still adapting ef lenses using the adapter. Many times I left my 70-200 2.8 at home just because it's way too heavy, but having a b-cam with the 55-200mm is amazing. Can't wait for the RF 70-200 2.8 IS to come out, that'll be a beast of a lens.
@Cheese Travels - I own two EF-S lenses (60 macro & 10-22 zoom) along with the EF 70-300, and I bought the RP in a kit with the EF/EF-S R adapter and the EF 24-105/3.5-5.6, which is now my "walk around" setup, so I don't really need/want any M lenses. However. . . I just found out that the EF/EF-S M adapter has dropped in price to just US $30, which makes the M50 body plus adapter a viable alternative pricewise to the SL3, so I'll probably choose it instead, since I prefer mirrorless.

Stuck between this and the T7i for my first camera. Photography is more the focus than video. Which would you recommend?
The T7i has more focus points and digital image stabilization. It is little bigger and heavier. I think if those two main features are important to you, you'll be very happy with it if.
when use clean HDMI the LCD 3 inch it still show ?

Hi Ariana. It will work well for you. My friend owns a salon and I’ve taken pics there with a ring light or with a window.

Can u do a comparison video comparing the canon m50 mark 2 and the canon sl3/250d/200d mark 2?
As someone who does not shoot video, the SL3 appeals to me more than the M50. The battery life is so much better.
