What a marvellous recording! Moments of magic, a sense of intensity, flashes of humour. And then at the end an interesting discussion of the piece by the players. Worthy of many more listens I think. Might help to put the opus number, as then it would appear in searches.
They gave a brilliant performance of this piece in Pasadena Sunday. I love that the two violinists trade off being first violin. I love the way the Cellist actively listens to the other players, reacting visibly to their playing. Beethoven intended a light ending of this turgid piece. He was not stoic but, perhaps, the first Existentialist. 'Life starts hard and meaningless and then gets really sad. .... Hell, lets make the best of it lads and lasses.' ... or something like that.
Very interesting to compare this version to the Guarneri Quartet. Last time I saw the Emersons was a while ago, when they still had Finkiel. New cellist is great too. I subsequently saw Finkiel in an excellent recital (with pianist). This particular Beethoven Quartet is one that is very hard for "pick-up" quartets to manage -- quartets that perform and have rehearsed together for years have a huge advantage in such pieces that call for extremely precise ensemble work.
@@pauldeck4500 Thank you for the fascinating comment. I have little knowledge of music. The Guarnari quartet has been my favorite for 52 years. I figured out about 5 years ago this was partly just because I like the tonality of the Guarnari violins.
