Schubert was lying on his deathbed and the music he requested was that of Beethoven's String Quartet, Number 14, Opus 131, in C sharp minor. All throughout his life, he was an avid admirer of Beethoven.
He had good choice.
That is correct.
I read that when he was delirous with typhus fever, he said, "No, this is not heaven, Beethoven is not here."
The players in a quartet that play any of the the late quartets MUST understand Beethoven's intentions, especially in the last movement of this piece, and this group does. I would think that you have had some pain and to have lived at least a certain amount of distress in your life. Perhaps I am to romantic in my assessment about that, but I would think it helps Beethoven touched on the deepest yearnings, pain and desire like no other composer. These players were up to it. Beautifully played!
Opus 131: the absolute summit of classical music, here wonderfully executed.
All right - one must never suppress a bold opinion . . . especially one I like, anyway!
Came to listen to the 6th movement because of BoB.
Actually listened to the entire quartet. Wonderful.
I love this performance of my favourite Beethoven string quartet.
The presto ❤

00:49 - 1. Adagio ma non troppo e molto espressivo
07:03 - 2. Allegro molto vivace
09:59 - 3. Allegro moderato

23:48 - 5. Presto
28:45 - 6. Adagio quasi un poco andante
30:36 - 7. Allegro
Thanks very much... Very useful!
Rachel Freebird? :P
Just wow... I listen to Beethoven Quartets every single day. This is special. Among the most estimable recordings...Italiano, Hungarian...thank you so much and bless you.
Very satisfying. I often listen to Beethoven after a particularly demanding day of work. His music commands calm to rule over distemper.
what animation, what tightness! Beethoven would appreciate your vivacity.
Band of brothers fans. This is what you are here for 28:46 ;)
that's what got me here. "those German's sure clean up good."
that's not Mozart, that's Beethoven...
What about 30:37 until the end? I don't think BoB portrayed this Beethoven piece truthfully by using only that small clip, and disregarding the development that *immediately* follows (not to mention the build up that proceeds). The transition from 30:34 to 30:37 is transcendent.
thanks for the heads up man
Thank you.
Oh hell yes!!! Entire performance is a BRAVO. What a fantastic😂 interpretation of arguably is the most demanding of the Beethoven quartets . Even though I am late to this party, sure glad I didn't miss it entirely.
I saw this group in Raleigh- with Caroline Shaw- I was totally enraptured by the tightness of their coordination. I would go hundreds of miles to ee them again
Really. I was going to listen to late Beethoven quartets, but fortunately happend onto this incredible performance of an unbelievable work of phenomenal intricacy and intimacy which rivals anything.
Thanks Nathalie Schmalhofer, Nu Lee Joung, Sheila Browne, Ludwig Schmalhofer, Andreas Schmalhofer, Streichquintett. Could you get a more euphonious name for the quintet? Perhaps not. Bravos.
The sobering “adagio quasi un poco andante” at 28:48-30:38, can be heard at Band of Brothers episode “Why we Fight”…
A beautiful, serene piece.
“That’s not Mozart. It’s Beethoven.”
George Luz : Hitler should have killed himself 3 years ago.....saves us a lot of troubles..! Capt. Nixon: Yeah he should have.......But he didn't.. 😢
Stunning performance of this great String Quartet in C# minor... loved every note and moment... wonderful.
Thank you! I've only recently started listening to Beethoven's "late" quartets. It's great to hear a new (at least for me) group.
Maestro L. van Beethoven at one of his best!
He composed this long after he lost the majority of his hearing.
The man created this beautiful, brilliant and timeless piece of music without being able hear it. He was such a musical genius that he had essentially memorized what each individual note sounded like. Then, he was able to put that down on paper, note by note, and arrange it into what we’re listening to here today. Today, around 200 years later, it’s still being enjoyed by people all over the world.
Ludwig van Beethoven was an absolute musical genius and a brilliant mind. How he was able to continue to compose music after losing his ability to hear is mind boggling.
Most people would have given up and likely would have fallen into a deep depression. Which I’m sure Beethoven considered doing at some point. How he managed to push through it though and continue to make music is incredible to me.
Waiting for minutes 28:44 so calming
An AMAZING and incredibly skill full performance! Keep up the fantastic work and without a doubt you will reach the top! 🎶♩🎻
The last slow movement is such a sad sad song.
That scherzo is the craziest thing he ever wrote.
Piano sonata 16, 3rd movement is the most crazy
Alec Jones That's a relatively conventional rondo compared to this. It's his early period anyway.
Especially near the end, where he imitates a quartet screwing up and losing their place
Haha, not quite but I agree it was kind of….
The master would approve
Hi, great performance, love the energy you bring.
Like!
excellent music...thanks for sharing
Played like a lake of waves in April
Lovely
Superb! A wonderful performance like this makes me think of why Beethoven wrote what he did as to any failings of the performers.
Thanks!
Bravo!!!
Excellent !
COPOK40 Yes, the minors are very good.
5th mvmt starts at 29:00
Bravo!
30:35 Drop it!
Bloody hell, that was something! 36:02
🎶♩🎻🎶♩🎻🎶♩🎻🎶♩🎻
23:49 Presto
28:45 band of brothers
28:45 beautiful 😍
Amazing performance
I don't wanna be critique but I felt presto part was little too fast
Last few movements seem a bit rushed, IMHO. I prefer the more romantic interpretations of the Op 131. My current fave is the Alban Berg Quartet.
Like a taste of lemon indeed
Absolutely Wundervolle Bravo
Mike C pick one of those instruments and play it as passionately as the music asks for along with the others and see if you don't move a little bit oh you probably don't play any of those instruments or you wouldn't have made such an ignorant comment.... let alone this piece is being hailed as Beethoven's best
wot no washboard?
berechtigte Frage
I've played Frisbee with this quartet :)
band of brothers fans...this is played some too fast--- it had to be a little slower...and- this quartett is some better than any smphony !!
I want sushi

anybody else notice the size of the place? anything to make money it seems, even if it means taking away the whole point of going to a quartet; I don't mean to complain, so I will end on a good note, d#.
Revelation of Bacchus. Excellent
I also dated one of the students of one of the members of this quartet
You just wasted a bunch of words
The whoop at the end was unnecessary
I'd argue the opposite
A bit like that comment then
one of these things just doesn't belong here...
my pitiful 2-cents is that it sounds like fingernails scratching a blackboard-
i just don't care for Beethoven's compositions.
they are just too long and meandering.
I love Beethoven and I've tried so hard to like this piece but I do not.
Try again
Sorry for the late response
@@danasheys9300 superbe musique
@@caffarelli1 how goes it?.
Please someone correct me but is this the piece that played in the t.v series BAND OF BROTHERS Ep. 5?! The scene were Capt. Nixon and his men looking at the rubbles of the destroyed city in germany...😮
Bravo!
