    For added realism, render an inverted camera in the water. Like the water droplet from the astronaut at 5:58 or the glass balls. It'll feel more real because our brains automatically assume it'll invert so when it doesn't, we feel something is off about the water.

    • @TamaraMakesGames
      @TamaraMakesGames  Před 2 měsíci +68

      That's a very good point but unfortunately that's where my hardware limitations come in. Unreal supports refraction and it does invert the image. It just doesn't work on my computer. This really bothered me as well and I have spent a good chunk of my time trying to fake that reflection but my attempts weren't successful. But who knows, maybe it'll be available for more powerful PCs or maybe I'll figure out how to replicate it

    Hello. I am studying to become a game designer/dev. A few things that could help. To make the water seem more realistic you could put a multitude of things in the water to sell the realism. A few things such as air bubbles, dirt particles, murkiness, etc. As for the inversion, it is more noticable on small droplets but if its large bubbles you can do a warp effect instead. Obviously its still in its early stages but the player should collect the water for bending. So instead of a large droplet coming out of the water it would be more of a stream coming out of the body of water into the players hands, collecting until the water necessary is bendable. This could be acomplished using a teather system that attaches the players hand to the body of water. It would sell the fluidity of the water you are collecting especially if the player moves around while they are.

      Yes, i thought the same! I think maybe when the water is floating it looks like water but when it falls down and disperse on the floor it looks exactly like liquid mercury, I agree! I'm sure is something about the reflections and the fact that the dirt doesn't "absorb" the water, that's what it makes it not look like water, like it's too thic to be water, the dirth should immediatly absorb it to be realistic. But yeah, It's a work in progress so I trust it will get even better from now on!

  • @alittletoochaotic
    @alittletoochaotic Před měsícem +2

    Hey, I had a couple ideas for how you could deal with the whole dropping the water ball down logic.Thought I'd share
    You could potentially detect what surface the waterball was dropped on as each material interacts with water differently, dropping it on soil as you did in the demonstration would result in deformation of the soil rather than spreading of the water along with water droplets that bounce off of the collected water for example. Here are some things you can try:
    Water ball dropped in:
    Water -> Treat ball as a rigidbody and use the same mesh dynamic to almost treat the top layer of water like a fabric, combine this with particle effects to give it that droplet look. After a preset threshold delete the waterball and increase the height of the water body based on the mass of the waterball.
    Soil/Grass -> Create a small pocket of water and then perform the same functions as the water to water collision.
    Soil/Grass option 2 -> Get a moisture index on the soil and increase it when water falls onto the ground. Give players the ability to extract water from the ground if the moisture index is high enough.
    Solid Ground (Concrete, metal, glass, etc) -> What you are doing rn is perfect for such materials
    Sorry for the long message, hope this can be of help. If you have more questions feel free to reach out, I am a developer myself so can help with implementation. Never worked with unreal though, more of a unity guy.

    Welcome back and welcome to Unreal !
    If you want to try again the "water plane" you could look up Unreal's "procedural mesh". It allows you to create a mesh through code and move the vertex around. I made water moving around like that using points moving up and down, affecting surrounding mesh, to have a feeling of waves, it also allows to have gameplay affect those points and have the water react to gameplay element for a more dynamic feel. It's not water simulation, but it's also a lot less demanding on performances.
    Good luck with the game !

If you want to use the dropped water later you could try using ponds, blending a water textures with a dirt textures for visuals, and somekind of method to keep track of these ponds. Alright, got some ideas regarding controlls (I don’t expect these to be added because they might be more insane than I think but still)
    Left click adds/sucks in water, and right click + hold holds water in that sphere
    If you’re already holding water but continuously adding, you increase the pressure of the sphere, and upon release, it explodes out
    If you’re fast and turn while releasing or something, you could make like a water blade with the controlled high-pressure release
    I think this has lots of potential for creative players to come up with emergent moves and attacks

    Hello, first of all great work... As someone who has been developing their water system for almost a year, I know how demanding and interesting it can be. But let me suggest a solution that will make your job easier in terms of water dynamics: look into SDF algorithms (whether it's for Unreal or Unity, Unreal Engine has a built-in SDF system, while for Unity, you'll have to put in a bit more effort to develop your own). I'm working on ocean and river system in the Unity engine, and modified SDF algorithms combined with compute shaders can provide a render texture or buffer containing everything related to water movement, leaving only the final details to be completed in the shaders, also you can use and raymarching technique too. Good luck with your further work.

    • @TamaraMakesGames
      @TamaraMakesGames  Před měsícem +2

      Thank you! Actually, I'm already using Unreal's SDF system. I suppose it wasn't clear from the video because I had to cut out a lot of the technical stuff from it. Not a lot of people would want to hear about all the cool technical details going on inside so I'm grateful for your interest. Thank you for commenting! And good luck with your project as well! By the way, I have a Discord server and you're welcome to share whatever you're working on there - discord.gg/dCJBpe2meg
