  • Back in August I set out with friends to tackle the Tour du Mont Blanc. Crossing three countries in 9 days, we make our way around the massif Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Western Europe.
    Come along with us on this 95 mile journey through France, Italy, and Switzerland!
    This is Part one of a two part series.

    Thanks for sharing, you guys had a similar itinerary to what I'm planning to do with my 10-y.o. daughter next summer. You gave us so much useful information, including the 'cheats'. Have an awesome hiking season!

      Ha maybe well end up running into each other some day!
      And glad to hear it helps. As for the TMB I did not prepare much since I was just piggy backing off of Tim, but hopefully you can find enough info from the video. But at least it gives you a better idea of what to prepare for..and make food reservations! The restaurants fill fast. Enjoy the TMB!

    I want to do this next summer. Can you explain how the campsites work? Do they need to be booked ahead of time or can you just hike from point to point and campsites will be available. The logistics is the only thing that scares me about this trip. Thank you, great video.

    Thank you so much for sharing this video. My husband and I are doing the TMB this August. I was wondering should I pack shorts? I’m afraid I might trip and fall, so I was hoping you can help me with your advice. I noticed that a lot of people do wear shorts. Thank you so much for your time.

    • @BackcountryWahine
      @BackcountryWahine  Před rokem +1

      Hey Leslie! Ooh thats exciting! So I would suggest shorts, cause it definitely got waaarm. I normally dont hike in shorts either but I was glad to have it. I actually have fjallravens convertible pants. They were SO convenient! I highly recommend! I believe theyre callled the Abisko midsummer zip off trouser. Theyre really lightweight compared to the rest of their stuff and they did pants duty and shorts duty! So I didnt need to bring a short and a pant. :) Hope that helps! Have the best time! Happy trails :)

      @@leslietran1922 Aww thank you! the blisters were gnarly! I think my shoes needed to be more breathable. They're waterproofed leather-good for washington, not so much here. 😅
      Wes was a true hero, he continued on and he was sick like a dog that last day. I didnt want to film him cause he was feeling awful..but he was a real trooper!
      And glad to be of help! I try to answer questions, so if you have anything else just hit me up here :) Enjoy it!

    Nice video! I'm going in August. Question, do you have any resources for plant knowledge (classes, books, etc) that you could point me to (US not Europe). Thanks.

      @BackcountryWahine  Před rokem

      Awesome! Hope you have an amazing time! It was such a fun trek..dont miss out on that pizza! 😆
      As far as plant books, gosh I have so many haha. In the beginning I just wanted as many different references as I could find because its hard to find pictures that give you a clear ID especially when youre unfamiliar. I wanted all the angles and descriptions!
      I suggest watching lots of videos, using the Seek app to cross reference (its not always accurate though) and getting into as many plant books as possible .. my personal favorite is by Alone contestant Nicole Apelian-Lost Book of Herbal Remedies. Sergei Boutenko has a great book and youtube videos as well. Anyway, I hope that helps a bit! Its so fun to learn about all the amazing "weeds" we have. Youll have a whole new appreciation!

    I am going there in a month. Do you need a sleeping bag for camping? How cold does it get at night?

    • @BackcountryWahine
      @BackcountryWahine  Před 10 měsíci

      Hey its probably a little bit too late now, sorry for the late reply, but yes I definitely use a sleeping bag. I sleep pretty cold though compared to most. It didnt get too cold, maybe 50s/ high 40s? (F) but I dont remember exactly. I do know I wouldnt have been happy if I didnt have a bag.
      My bag on this was a feathered friends 10 degree..but again, I sleep cold. Hope that helps some! Have a great time!

    Fun, well-filmed video, but the host’s obsession - and frustration - with finding pizza in Italy, especially Northern Italy, is eyebrow-furrowing. Pizza is an American creation. It was invented by Italian immigrants in New York City. Yes, it has pollinated itself back to Italy, mainly in cities visited by Americans, a category that generally excludes stops along the Tour du Mont Blanc, but it’s not native to the country. You would think a little bit of background research ahead of a 10-day hike would have revealed that.

    • @BackcountryWahine
      @BackcountryWahine  Před rokem

      It wasnt so much about having pizza just because we were in Italy, its because theyre had been many talks about good pizza along the way. Especially this one spot where a brother and sister made their own cheese and bread.
      If you trek you know how most conversations are surrounded by the excitement of real food when youre done. This round it happened to be pizza, and at the end of the second round it happened to be a burger. Its just what we were craving.
