I think it is nothing short of awesome, how you have taken this very adverse situation and turned it into an opportunity to enhance your life with new things. GOOD new things!
I was shocked to see you interested in feeding birds and squirrels. Because just about 15 minutes ago, I saw a bird feeder I have, in storage, and thought I should put it up now. I've had it for several years, I brought it from my parents home, in a northern climate, to where I live now, which is tropical. We also have many squirrels where I live, and you have to take precautions, because they will eat all the bird food. There are also about 7 cats that live here. They keep away rats, and are nice to have. But the stray cats, you shouldn't feed, because they will never leave. And here, they\ squirrels are eating giant avocado, we have growing. So I'm picking most, and giving some away, because there are too many. It is very interesting to see how Ukrainians react, to the U.K., and the U.S., as both countries have a lot of similarities'. I'm learning about both countries, Ukraine and Britain, at the same time.
A very Happy New Year to you,and your family Olga! Its great that you guys are doing well in the UK....Massive respect and peace from the Republic of Ireland.....👍🇮🇪🇺🇦🥂👍

We put out nijer seed as well. It's tiny so you need a feeder that has tiny holes. Three small, brightly coloured finches love it, goldfinches, siskins and redpolls. It sometimes takes a while before they discover it but when they do they keep coming back. Sqirrels can't get at it, another reason to try it.

Olga, for us ornithologists combating squirrel incursions into the territory of garden birds is an endless task. Not to say that the squirrels aren’t deserving it’s just that the birds are more subject to the vicissitudes of winter. You may also enjoy helping foxes by providing cheap frozen chicken around twilight, they will return and love you forever. Much as we do.
I used to have a bird feeder, but my neighbor has a lot of overgrown plants with rats living there. I took it down as I don’t want to attract them to my yard. Sorry birds. I like your Christmas tree, wishing you well going into the new year!
You can leave out wool.down feathers, lint and fur from the dog brush in a dry place and the birds will use it for their nests, also any fat from meat trimmings or solidified grease if you have an air fryer.
The one where you have the apple is where the nuts for birds go, it makes the birds eat a little at a time and not choke their babies with a whole nut down the babies throut. The squirrels shouldn't be able to get them from there. You can put them somewhere else for the squirrels maybe. ✌🏻❤
What you can do is with the oil you used or lard when melted put some sunflower seeds in them and pour into a tin or jar and hang outside for the birds
I truly always joke with people when its necessary that you cannot enter a home without seeing something I created little bits and pieces here or there but i can always take claim to the recycling system design and the trash cans BTW congratulations ☺️
