Under the ownership of Roman Abramovich Chelsea achieved their most successful period, 17 major trophies in total. The club adopted more of a galacticos approach to success, but has this short term focus affected Chelsea in the long run?
Jon Mackenzie investigates whether Abramovich’s tenure has made it difficult for Chelsea to rebuild. Illustrates by Philippe Fenner.

Fans of nearly 90% of the other clubs in England would have loved to have been held back like that

It's not Roman Abramovic held Chelsea back, it's the fact City and Liverpool changed their entire culture of their club and raising the bar in the Premier League so high that the rest fell behind. Despite this, Chelsea still managed to win silverware regardless City and Liverpool challenging for the Premier League title. So no, Abramovic did not hold Chelsea back. Matter of fact, Todd Boehly fired Tuchel and hired Potter who's out of his depth.

Sacking Ancelotti is one of the worst decision I’ve ever seen under Roman

Roman has been probably the best owner in world football over the last 20 years. He wanted nothing less than the best for the club and truly cared about Chelsea.

Roman was one of the best owners to ever grace the EPL and even elevated the EPL to another level globally. Turned Chelsea into the most successful London team during his time and for a long portion wasn’t even allowed to be in the country and still ran it incredibly well given the circumstances. The culture he built here can never be beaten, the standards never dropped, and you could see from our past players that they loved it

Sponsored by Todd Boley? 😅 Roman was by far the most successful club owner in history. The stats don't lie.

Roman abromovich's takeover changed football forever..Since his takeover, many Middle eastern investors have followed suit, but Abramovich set the trend...(Man city,Psg and now Newcastle)

The fact that he ensured that 1.75 billion is locked in the club is enough to say he’s helped our long term future

As a Chelsea fan, seeing the rise of Liverpool & Man City going head to head for 5 seasons in a row, they just took it to another level. We were always rhe 3rd best in England with those 2 around. Chelsea would still be competing if Abramovitch was still around. Need to remember that he was forced out by the government. I as a fan do not trust Potter 1 bit.

With abramovich we knew that chelsea was gonna minimum at least win a trophy every season only three times during his 19 year tenure we failed to win a trophy in a season and with Bohley looking like he’s gonna end his first season without a trophy just shows how good chelsea were under his ownership never forgotten 💙

Roman never held us back. Not winning a PL for years doesn’t mean we have been a failure… we have still competed and won other trophies in that time.

Without Roman Abramovich it is highly likely Chelsea wouldn’t have existed due to the financial situation, let alone win countless trophies and buy the best players
