as an electrician, the on/off switch is supposed to be on the outside for the emergency need of an iron giant getting electrocuted by the plant
That's an oddly reason to put a switch at the reach of anyone
not an electician, but i occasionally work for companies and factories, with huge machines, most of which have large red easy to reach emergency stop buttons. Just in case.
I am a electrician, that would be more of a lineman question. But generally yes you do want to have an emergency shutoff switch easily accessible. What is worse a kid or some teenagers shutting off power for a few minutes or exploding transformers?

the reason the giant is so stealthy when he eats the antenna is that he hasnt had his head all fucked by eating the power grid yet, so hes still in attack/stealth mode
Pretty sure his head got fucked when he crash landed in the harbor, you can see the dent when he looks down at the sailor.

Fun fact, this movie was made by Brad Bird in honor of his sister who's husband shot and killed her and then himself. Brad's pitch for the movie was "what if a gun was given a conscience and decided it didn't want to be a gun anymore?"
It's a really beautiful message and this movie is such a beautiful gem. Because of its age a lot of people overlook it or are too young to know it exists. Take an hour and 26 minutes of your time, and respect this work of art!

Other movie generals would've sent an entire army day 1 and carpet bombed the town, meanwhile this guy was level headed even when standing directly infront of the giant and was willing to hear everyone out. This movie was my childhood, I wore out quite a few VHS tapes watching it so much. I have lived my life by ' you are who you choose to be ' and it is a lesson I learned at a very early age thanks to this move.
All time favorite for me and nothing will ever top it.

As a real engineer student. In 1882 the first power grid was made, for about 12 years the on and off button was actually left unprotected for anyone to touch till they figure out why the power will turn off randomly out of nowhere

Fun fact, the giant's dream was not in the original version of the movie so it allways seems like Deen was overreacting whem the giant was triggered by the toy gun. This little 20 seconds sceen help a whole lot to explaine Deen's actions. And i fucking love the fact that they took the time to go back and add it.

Fun fact: the dream scene was cut from the original release of the film and was not even fully animated for the first DvD release in the bonus features, and now has become a permanent part of the film on most streaming services. The original reason for the cut was too keep the Giants origins a mystery throughout the film. Because at the end of the day, it does not matter where you came from or what your original purpose was, what matters is what you do in the present and "who you choose to be".
I think the reason they didn't put it in originally was so that when it does go apeshit and enters its decepticon form it is more shocking.
Afterall, all you have seen up until now is this gentle giant, who couldn't possibly ever hurt anybody, and then, suddently, it turns into this absolute planet-killing monster, it's a pretty huge impact.
But then, I guess, way too many people missed the fact that the robot is MEANT to be a planet-killing monster but instead it CHOOSES to be a gentle giant, so they probably added the scene about it's past in order to reinforce even more this idea that, yes, the robot is meant to be evil but instead it chooses to be good.
To be honest I'm like 90% sure that without that scene I'd have totally missed the point and I'd have just thought "eh, the robot just went crazy because the kid got hurt" and I wouldn't have put much more thought about it.
So yeah, I'm glad it's there, yes it does kinda ruin the reveal for the smart guys but it's a kid's movie afterall, it's not inception, it's supposed to bring all the people along until the end.

I always loved how Dean opens the door and sees The giant smiling brightly at him. It always made me happy lol.
It is said that when interviewed, someone asked why the director made this film, and the director responded that he made this film in honor of his sister who died from a gun shot, and he asked the question, “What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?” Knowing that back story made me love this film even more so. This movie doesn't get the credit it deserves, so thank you for reviewing it, so that it can get more exposure and more people would want to go and watch it. It deserves a bigger fanbase.
It's actually based off of a book called "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes (yes that's where Hogarth's last name is from in the movie)

This is one of my favorite animated sci-fi movies ever made and the fact that it happens around the 1950's just makes it even better.
The book this is based on is pretty wild. A moon dragon comes down at one point and tries to eat everyone and the iron giant tries to protect the earth.
Still get teary eyed at the Giant's sacrifice. The music, the image of the Giant flying selflessly towards the missile, Him only just uttering, "Superman" before he collides with it- God i love this movie
And then you see him with supes in multi versus and you tear up a little

I was just old enough when this came out that the pre teen level philosophy blew my mind.
It's interesting to note that the giants flashback/dream wasnt in the original. It made his weapon form reveal at hogarth's "death" that much more shocking.
And arguably made the film more family friendly as the giants past was only implied.

Thank you, I thought I was going crazy! I have seen the movie a million times and I have never seen that scene. I personally prefer the ambiguity of where the giant comes from and his history being a mystery, but I do see the value of a scene like that
Apparently that is the case, it goes against the message of "being who you choose to be." I remember watching it as a kid without those scenes and I prefer it that way.
@@natem1579 Well no, it does the opposite. It shows it was made as a machine of war, its very purpose is to be a weapon, but it ultimately chooses to not be a weapon. It's even more being who you choose to be, because it shows that even if your whole life was planned out by someone else, you still hold the power to be who you want to be.
This extends the message to people that have overbearing parents and in a culture where pre-arranged marriages are a thing, removing the excuse of your life being actively controlled is different to the giant's freedom and thus it is impossible to do what the giant did and become your own. They essentially ensured the message just reaches everyone, because I doubt there's anyone with a life more controlled than literally being made and programmed to be something someone else chose.

Given how long it would take to build a metal statue of the giant, I assume that the army already had studied the shit out of the last remaining piece and come to the conclusion that it was just a very advanced screw or something that was basically useless to them. Either that or the general, having witnessed the devastation that the giant caused, decided that it was probably not a good idea to try to develop the technology to build their own.

Hey there, my Father was an electrical engineer, and I remember him laughing at how impractical this bit is, back when he took me to see this film as a kid.
So yeah, no way they’d leave that switch so easily accessible. It’s also unlikely it’d be so cartoonishly big.

The kinda theme of this movie was taken from the fact that the directors sister got shot by an abusive husband, so the director thought that he'd make this movie around "a gun that didn't want to be a gun" like how we see the iron giant trying to be what he wants, instead of a "gun"
