3:06 9-year-old kid throwing around words like "undignified"! I love how they pulled off writing a smart kid. A lot of fictional smart kids are either essentially adults in child bodies, science nerd boy genius stereotypes, or only smart in one really limited area. But they wrote what a smart kid is often actually like: Still a kid who likes doing normal kid things, and doesn't always have common sense, but is a resourceful and quick-thinking problem solver, outwits Mansley multiple times, and has higher than average verbal expressive skills.
It also helps that Mansley himself is a glorified idiot

Like Squidward if he tried acting stereotypically cool
I didn’t get the joke until just now is that in the diner scene, Dean literally had a squirrel in his pants, and it wasn’t until I had recently saw the full clip of the Phineas and Ferb song “Squirrel in my pants”, where the guy said “she literally had a squirrel in her pants” that I realized that the phrase had a metaphorical meaning, but I wasn’t able to figure out what that meaning was until I saw the diner scene again and it all made sense
I just knew he was a cool cat to hang with 😎👉👉

Watching this as a kid I did not understand the implications of a grown man drinking coffee late at night. Now as an adult, I realize how much I relate to Dean.
what’s the implication? that he doesn’t sleep much or something?
Dean was having very dark thoughts
Theory: Dean was in Japan after WW2 as an architect hired by the UN Occupation force to redesign and rebuild the bombed out buildings. My reasons for thinking this are:
His aptitude for building scrap metal art.
Wears a Taoism smoking gown
Knows of Japanese popculture, like Godzilla.
His causal nature of working with the US army.
I don't know I'll think of more.
This is a seriously good fan theory. I'd imagined he was in Italy (Monte Cassino specifically) as a regular G.I. who'd always done art ("Monuments Men", anyone?). That being said, I can also imagine him in Occupied Japan, and seeing the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
"Gojira" ("Godzilla" to us English speakers) came out in 1954, the events of "The Iron Giant" happened in 1957, so that part of your fan theory definitely fits.
I always thought of Dean as Asian.
Holy shit this is such a well thought out fan theory! Impressive job! 👍
@@MizzWGGrrrl especially nice comparison here because both Iron Giant and Godzilla are about giants who stand in for military might. Both are about the horrors of war, and especially nuclear weapons. Those three movies (and Treasure Planet) were all amazing but became victims of terrible marketing at that time, when people were still too enveloped by the Disney renaissance and felt animated movies had to be a 'certain way'. Atlantis probably suffered the most out of those movies.

Supposing that Squirrel Boy’s dad died in WW2 since the movie takes place in the 50s there’s nothing stopping Dean from becoming his official step-dad. And call him Hogarth by night lol.
His father actually died in the Korean War, I had 2 uncles who fought there in the Army and also several friends of mine.
@@CrossOfBayonne If Hogarth's father did die during a war, it would have definitely been the Korean War. When the Giant's hand is inside the house playing with the TV, you can see a family portrait above the set, presumably Hogarth and his parents, so Hogarth knew his father for at least a brief time. I still wonder about the timeline, though, bc in an interview Brad Bird said that we were supposed to conclude that the father's death was a recent occurrence. IIRC the Korean War ended in 1953, and the movie takes place in 1957 - which is quite a bit of a time span. Maybe Hogarth's father was killed during a routine military training exercise, or something like that, after the war ended.
@@yooneeque1 Yeah, I have friends of mine who fought in Korea one of them named Charles Garrod who was the USAF like Hogarths father
If Hoghart's dad would have died in WW2, Hogarth wouldn't have been born. The Movie takes place in 1957 and according to Wikipedia Hogarth is 9 Years old which means he was born in 1948. WW2 on the other Hand already ended in 1945, 3 years before Hogarth was even born.
After watching a lot of Stranger Things the past few weeks, and being reminded of this movie… I’ve realized that Jim Hopper from Stranger things is almost exactly like Dean. When shit ISN’T going down… he seems like your average lazy guy who doesn’t take anything seriously. But when shit DOES go down, turns out the dude is a badass.
Holy shit you watched Stranger Things!? I love Stranger Things! And I love SEASON 4!!!
I can kinda see that? Except Dean is more of the weird but chill artsy type, and sure his place is messy, but he runs his own business, he feeds his creativity and seems content and happy. Hopper, on the other hand, uses a laid-back, can’t-be-bothered demeanor as a front for his unprocessed trauma, loss, and depression. All of which gives him character growth, a great story arch, and a motivation for the choices he makes throughout the show. All that to say, Dean and Hopper are great characters, but I don’t think they’re that similar.
