The topic of love in Scripture is so interesting, in that it exceeds any worldly thoughts. It isn't conducive to what we want, but requires we give our all. We are expected to love as selflessly and expect nothing in return as Christ Himself did. It is required that we show it to everyone in every situation whether it makes us feel good or not. It is as selfless as being honest with your children about your past so that they don't learn about it from others. It requires humility, allowing ourselves to be real before God and before those around us so that Jesus can truly be made know through our relatable sufferings. Love isn't just a word or even an action...it is the state of our heart. Our actions make that state known.
