Well, you just described me. My Mother was killed when I was 13. I was left My Father, who I had Never really known. He did a Horrible job, and I appreciate his position, but he should've stepped up. That incident has Traumatized for my Whole life. I began using drugs age 15. Thank you for the work that you do. I have seen more than 100 Therapists, Psychiatrists, and the like. None of them ever helped me. Most of them look horrified after I tell them my life story. That in itself was Frightening! 👌

Trauma leaves such a mark on people's lives. I agree a child who suffers trauma struggle with learning as their minds are in turmoil. I would love to be brave enough to do the treatment that Timmy did. I was never in addiction but I know the destruction of it as I lived it. It's harrowing. Great talk. Keep up the good work. Congratulations

Tha k you for marking trauma in childhood affecting education.
The best explanation I heard a year ago, was that trauma shunts the blood from the brain to fight or flight, hence IQ lowers during trauma.

With all respect to this professor, No need to always compare their calm life with others bad life. It doesn’t add value to the discussion. There is a young therapist who is your Uber and she has numerous subscribers and she always says we to refer to bad experiences. That is how they get into others hearts

I’m not a man, but when you talk about team sports- I found team sports traumatizing as a kid, but a few years ago during Covid I got a particular job where I experienced being a team in the most beautiful, healing, beneficial, and life changing ways. And a lot of that experience was healing my relationship with men too, as they were so supportive to me on the team, and continue to be.

So proud of how far he and they have come and all people who take this journey
This is what we are to be doing with people with trauma and get in trouble withe the law etc.. understanding developmental trauma brain gives us compassion for each other.. and of course we hold people accountable, yet we have to show them the light. The light with an is there.
It’s hard and if you can be gifted with a friend or someone who truly understands and supports you it will be easier

Violence was my only friend for most of my life because of being battered as a kid for everything and everyone else's failures. Well at 43 I'm off the drugs after 20 years heavy abuse and my treacherous family have the police knocking their doors now about what happened when I was 4. I hope for justice as I don't want to deal with it myself and they definitely don't want 😞

Ye hit so many 'nails on the head' in under 1 hour, and covered SO much, and he was very noticeably impressed by the direction the interview took from the very beginning. Dr. Van der Kolk makes such an important point in being capable of articulating what took place, being able to name what happened.
“The Holistic Psychologist”, an online community on all the major platforms, has helped me immensely - commiserating with others, reading others’ remarks and the content all have contributed greatly to my understanding AND healing and growth.
    Thank you for this.
Postscript: Another important point about growing up with a single parent in a rather isolated set of circumstances, which my experienced: “exiled” from the remainder of the extended family, and therefore completely overlooked and disregarded.

My brother sent me this video. We both, in fact all four of us, had a difficult childhood. My father was a World War II veteran. A tank commander, wounded at Anzio. He had a mental breakdown when I was nine. It affected each of us differently because we were all different ages and had different understandings. I want to thank my brother for sharing this. We lost my oldest brother who developed severe mental illness. Perhaps because of him, we didn’t recognize that we too were wounded. Little by little we are learning. Little by little we are making progress. Always too slow, but that goes with evolution.

Trauma impacts every nook and cranny. You suffer and make others suffer. All too many traumatized people live alone by necessity. Myself, I can only deal with people in short spurts. They either irritate me or stress me. I couldn’t live with anybody at this point. I like peace and quiet.
