Cumbrian Silage Round-up 2023 (Part Three) Five MF outfits filling the clamp.

- The third part of my compilation videos following my visits during the Cumbrian silage season in 2023 features five various Massey Ferguson outfits clamping the grass. A mixture of classics and more modern machines comprise in order an MF 399 and Twose buckrake, MF 390/ Grays buckrake, dual wheeled MF 5445/ Moulton outfit with a MF 4355 rolling the pit, MF 6470 & Moulton buckrake with a MF 135 rolling and MF 390 and Twose buckrake completing the roundup. The next video post in a couple of weeks time will feature five more outfits of various makes and models.

Hi David and thanks for the dose of Massey Ferguson's to cheer up my day. Its great watching them all working away in what is really one of the most dangerous tasks on any farm, but with everyone working at a safe pace, and with great awareness of what is going on around them. The 390 at the end was running a little smoky and I could almost smell the fumes which brought back great memories of how it was back in the days of MF 35s, 135s and 165s being the main stay of many farms. Thank you Fraser, I’m very well thanks. Yes seen a few of the red and greys this year and you’re right on both counts, one of the most dangerous jobs but slow and steady is the way to go to avoid an issues! Yeh the last 390 was kicking out a bit of reek but at least it’s blowing the carb out the engine. I’m with you as many moons ago when younger I always copped the buckraking job on guess what? A Massey 165! It was 2wd in many ways mostly as the back wheels were providing the grip and the front ones… well the less said about that the better! @@davidwinthrop7077 You are so correct about the light steering on a 165, as I remember my first time on one hauling a load of hay bales on an overweight single axle trailer that made me think I had no steering at all 🙂. There is some snow around me but nothing like what you have had down your way which is surprising as usually its up here that gets it bad. Stay safe. Fraser

Yes limited headroom in many of these older buildings is certainly the issue and unfortunately there’s no getting by without taking the cab off especially when many of the farms just take one cut and it’s usually a heavy crop. Lot’s of skill involved in those tight spaces, hats off to the operator. Many thanks once again, cheers David.
