      @Mic the Vegan Hey Mic! Always love your vids! Is it possible for you to do an analysis on the study that just came out saying that humans were apex predators for 2 millions years and ate a meat heavy diet for that time? Because honestly I'm feeling a little scared thinking how anti-vegans are gonna use that study to "debunk" veganism... 😅

    I used to be really into more and more in-depth testing like this gut one. But now I lean more toward Dr McDougall’s approach: “It’s the food.” If you eat healthier, you’ll be healthier. If you’re having a problem and still eating some junk, then just junk the junk.

    • @SevenEllen
      @SevenEllen Před 3 lety

    This is awesome!! I would love to know more about the studies about the different little guys you were tested for (I read a book where they were called "gut buddies" and it stuck in my brain this way). I very much enjoyed watching your videos on the studies on good cholesterol and bad cholesterol and for the past few years each time I got tested, my numbers were almost exactly the same as yours and I was told that my HDL was too low, yet I wasn't sure how much I trusted that "too low" was actually a thing (at least at my levels). This makes me wonder if the gut cultivates more of certain species than others when consuming a non-vegan diet, and those species aid in processing the animal foods, thereby not being needed so much in someone who doesn't consume animal products? If you've delved in to those studies, I would be fascinated to hear your take.

    I learned that eating animal products, especially meat, spends dangerously way too long in our large digestive systems. My grandad and uncle, who lived in the same house, both ended up with bowel cancer from their heavy and "traditional" meat diet that they had. There is no doubt in my mind, that their diet played a huge part.

      And just for anyone who may not know, dandelions are absolutely essential, for bees to survive in early Spring when there isn't much of anything else for them to consume. So never take more than you need, and usually the rule when foraging is only take about one third, ensuring the plant will continue growing in that area. 😊

    my mother's dandelion potato salad recipe: in spring pick the young leaves and short bulbs or purchase the leaves at the store or sub with curly endive... marinate some cubed tofu with some turmeric, salt, caper juice or black salt (set aside). steam or boil potatoes and cut them up, add whatever chopped veggies you like (onion, celery, carrot, cucumber, minced garlic, etc). mix everything up with the warm potatoes, add cleaned, chopped dandelion leaves and buds and use an italian vinaigrette or whatever dressing you want... you can also add capers and/or chopped olives.

      @@Atypical_Chad Yeah I'm really curious what parameters they test for, and how many are relevant to Gojiman's realm of study. The company points out that they don't necessarily do diagnoses, and that they're non-FDA approved. They do provide raw data and parameters that could be interpreted, though. So I'm wondering if you could save money doing Thryve's microbiome test, and still doing a consult with Gojiman, seeing as he's more able to provide access and info regarding vegan probiotics and necessary antibiotics.

    I remember reading something somewhere about how it’s actually good for your gut bacteria to change composition as you age and that some gut bacteria that might be okay for you when you’re very young will indicate bad health if you still have a lot as you age- I’m pretty sure bacteroides was one of those you don’t want to hold onto as you age. This fits in with my theory that though things like animal fat and protein might have had an evolutionary advantage for us at one point - prolly cuz they make us grow to full size faster(def a good thing if you’re a hunter/gatherer), are really bad for longevity.

Also a half teaspoon of dried ginger, half teaspoon of whole fennel seed, teaspoon of anise seed and if I have some dried fruit around I will even add that as well. Needless to say with a cup of oats and all the different additions I have to use about 4 and a bit cups of water. I just mix and match with the oats and red lentils as the base. And I always add a huge handful of the greens as well. Sounds like a lot, but between the girlfriend and I it is just perfect.

      If you find your kimchi is too salty then be sure to rinse the cabbage very thoroughly after the salting/softening step. The primary purpose of the salt is to draw moisture out of the cabbage leaves and once that has happened you can rinse all the salt away.
      Here’s a relatively easy recipe that I find gives consistently good results: minimalistbaker.com/easy-vegan-kimchi/ (and note that while it calls for a tablespoon of salt, most of that will be washed away (and the recipe makes 15 servings, so per serving it’s not that much)).
