Formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1979 by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals), and Michael Conroy (bass, vocals). Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards)were subsequently added to the lineup of the band.
On 1982's After the Snow, the band's sound evolved from the dark, moody and challenging post-punk found on its debut, Mesh & Lace, to a more commercial and radio friendly mix of synthesizers, guitars, catchy drumbeats and singer Robby Grey's unmistakable vocals. "I Melt With You” brought the band up from the underground to the mainstream. It's a song so popular that the band was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 BMI Awards for 5 million plays on radio. Modern English would record various records over the years, and most recently, the band released its latest album, 2017’s Take Me To The Trees.

Wow, many thanks for this… like revisiting a time capsule … the fact that there are so little views of this video , is somewhat sad, but that’s the way it goes…
Excellent recording. Thanks for posting @DanielKirby

Louisiana, I expected more of rooting for these boyz! God bless Modern English!
Long life to you boyzz-!
Editing time. What happened to Ink and Paper?!!!!!
Saw them perform mesh and lace at Echoplex like 6 years ago. This sounds much better. I prefer Zebulon. Would have gone to this, but Martin Dupont was the same night. There were some tough choices that night. Thank you for uploading! Love your uploads
Is that actually Robbie Gray ?... So many amazing albums at that point in time. Too bad he didn't do " Love Breaks Down" from the album, Stop Start.
53:40 "Fake British Accents" LOL!!!
