  • Twilight Zone: The Movie is a 1983 American science fiction horror anthology film produced by Steven Spielberg and John Landis as a cinematic interpretation of the 1959-64 TV series created by Rod Serling.
The film stars Vic Morrow, Scatman Crothers, Kathleen Quinlan, and John Lithgow, with Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks in the prologue segment.
Burgess Meredith starred in four episodes of the original series and took on Serling's position as narrator. Other actors from the original series included William Schallert, Kevin McCarthy, Bill Mumy, Murray Matheson, Peter Brocco, and Patricia Barry.
The film is a remake of three episodes of the original series and introduces one original story.
Landis directed the prologue, the first segment, and the epilogue; Spielberg directed the second segment, Joe Dante the third, and George Miller the final.
Dante recalled that the four stories were originally intended to be interwoven, with characters from one segment appearing in another segment, but problems with the filming precluded this.
The film gained notoriety before its release for the stunt helicopter crash which took the lives of actor Vic Morrow and child actors Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen during the filming of the segment directed by Landis.
The two child actors had been hired illegally. Their deaths led to a high-profile legal case, although no one was found to be criminally liable for the accident.[

It's sad and I read that before vic morrow shot the scene that would end his life he told one of the people on the set that he must be crazy and should have a stuntman for the scene. I also seen the death footage and your right matt it is so haunting and sad.

That is coincidentally what I read as well. I think it may be from a book that was written about him. I really wish we could have seen what the original version of the ending of the first segment would have been like, but I have a feeling we're likely not going to get anything about that on the Blu-ray though.

Good review. John Landis's sort of humourous demeanour is hiding his feelings to that terrible tragedy but I've said that before.

Everytime someone mentions this film to me, the haunting images of those deaths hits me like a glass shard in the brain. Such a terrible tragedy. I still dont understand all the facts of the case, but how could a jury not hold Landis accountable for putting those poor people in harms way which could clearly lead to such an accident occurring?

The tragic thing is that Landis himself is very much aware of what happened and that he broke a few laws, yet he is still vilified for it even though he acknowledged that he himself was partially to blame. Now I definitely won't say he was the wrong director for this, i'm pretty sure he could have done a good job...if it wasn't for the ending being incomplete. Yes it would be interesting to see what would happen if someone like Ken Russell (a British horror director) or even Stuart Gordon was hired to direct the opening bit and the epilogue, or maybe...this may be a bit of a stretch but... George Romero. There was a 2000's Twilight Zone series I believe, I have seen Jordan Peele's version of it and I think the 80s series actually did do the segment Landis wanted to have as a second segment. Although a David Lynch directed Twilight Zone segment would have been interesting.
I believe that in a book about Morrow, it is explained his last words were 'i've got to be crazy if i'm going to do this shot' and that he also said he should have gotten a stunt double. And also I may have misjudged the second story because I remember thinking it was a bit tooo...warm hearted for a twilight zone segment, but then I realized there were episodes of the original show that had lighthearted elements to them. And while it is terrible that we never will get to see what the proper ending to the 'Time Out' segment, because I don't think it's even on the blu-ray.

With an exception of John Landis, who've wrote, co-produced and directed in this first segment, "Time-Off," several others such as
Sir Ken Russell were not interested.

I read in the original script that the hitchhiker Aykroyd plays in the movie was supposed to be a recurring character in all of the stories, like sort of the host.

that scene with vic morrow and the helicopter was the one time that CGI would have been a better method than practical effects. of course they didn't have it back then. another option would be stock footage or a miniature copter.

11:10 I agree with you Spielberg had a good reason for not wanting to talk to John Landis after all these years for not giving a fuck about his segment in the film either.
16:39 Also John McTiernan got sent to prison for laying in a court of law but Landis killed 3 people what he gets done to him a slap on on the wrist WTF?

I found the opening hitchhiker segment of this very memorable horror anthology(written by John Landis) extremely exciting!!! I bought Dan ankroyd& Brooks opposite attract, stranger chemistry and how it goes from bad to worse kept me looking forward :-) this is one if not the first horror anthology I seen as a kid and it really disturbed me!! I feel that John Landis(despite the helicopter accident) Steven Spielberg and William Matheson&&Jon donte with including cast like John Lithgow,K.Quellin,Keith Gordon I believe and narration by burgess Meredith was in sync& SENSATIONAL!! I wasn't to impressed by Scotman C. short but I've seen worse plus it did fit the tone of the film, balancing out surreal horror& imagination. This anthology definitely is one of my favorite& doesn't get the apparition it deserves smh I'd put this right up there with creepshow, cats eye(which it reminds me more of)& my top favorite, creepshow 2& tales from the hood&I'd say I like twighlight zone the movie much better than tales from the darkside. Now that I think about it,I actually enjoyed twighlight zone the movie more than cats eye!! I got more of a kick out of the stories, cast& director/writers who worked on twighlight zone the movie.

My least favorite segment is the second one. It's far too saccharine for its own good and feels really out of place because of it. He did have the writer of ET work on the script, so that might have had something to do with it. I think it's the worst thing Spielberg directed. Always is his worst feature film, but Kick the Can is his worst directing job.

this film was uneven. i think it was a mistake to remake classic episodes from the tv show. As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, then don't fix it. I liked the segments with the demon in the car, the time traveller, I sort of liked the segment with the kid watching cartoons, the other parts-the old folks home, the demon on a plane-I didn't like. I thought the tv show did those segments well enough.

I enjoy all the segments despite the old folks home being the weakest one I think Spielberg originally wanted to do a remake of a horror episode but after the incident he decide to do a safe sugar coated episode. Overall the final episode about guy on the plane by George Miller is the best of the movie and it would be cool if we got a new Twilight Zone movie.
