  • Addressing one of the most recurring questions I've received since starting this channel. A quick explanation on how crew assignments work in Army copters and the progression of a flight school graduate to a Pilot in Command.
Also some thoughts on the rumors surrounding a DCS apache module.
Since no one likes to hear me drone on I included some Kiowa footage from Iraq and Afghanistan.

When I was living in a town not too far from the Kentucky side of Fort campbell, I grew up playing Jane's longbow...obsessively.

Thanks for sharing this insight into US Army aviation. I really enjoy these looks into how real pilots do stuff.
Here is a bit of trivia to add. The services did at one time regularly team up aircrews. I've read a lot about the Vietnam air war and there's numerous references to pilots/backseaters always flying together. You can check out the leading US aces of the war and you will see the names of pilots and WSO/RIOs matched up almost perfectly. According to a guest on FPP this practice was changed some time after Vietnam (I wish I had a more exact date) and today those slots are routinely rotated.

Oh nice. I imagine crew complacency became an issue. Switching crews up kinda keeps you on your toes.

I better get playing online and make some buddies to fly with before the AH64D comes out!

Cool stuff. Now the question about classified stuff: The Viper and Hornet are more modern and got all that stuff, why was that possible?

Couldn’t tell you. Except that those are also older models than the newer stuff and according to people I know those modules don’t account for all their capabilities.

The guest in the recent interview on GR explained this. He said ED was perfectly able to create a F35 if they wanted to. However, they couldn't make one that would live up to the reputation that ED has as making them as realistic as possible. And this is due to access. They don't have access to everything they need to make a F35 the way they want to make one and it would end up being fake. They do however have access to the info they need for the Viper and Hornet because of available reference material and SMEs that are able to talk about their systems.
Also Casmo's right about them being very incomplete. The Viper I know for sure can do a whole lot more than what is currently modeled in DCS. Its one of my favorite all time planes and I can't bring myself to buy it because of that.

Just to put it into perspective, while they are adding the AH-64D to DCS... It's an AH-64 block from 2002. Same goes for the A-10. There was an A-10 pilot on hoggit that did an AMA and the A-10 in DCS featured is something that he was flying around in the early 2000s. Combine that with the wealth of material from the 1980s and/or 1990s that are on these aircraft and you can start getting detailed profiles on how to simulate them. Combine that with actual former pilots that can tell you if something feels wrong or off and you got something that's close enough for most uses.
