After 82 games per season, Millions of dollars in costs, salaries, maintenance, travel charges, food costs, equipment replacement. 2023-2024 season came down to a line I have use many many a time playing street hockey for fun. NEXT GOAL WINS. Good thing playing is still fun, but than as a fan we aren't playing are we, nor are we getting paid. @@user-yr4nm8yg1r You missed my point. Washington has to seriously begin to rebuild the club. However, Ovie is gunning to break Gretzky's record for regular season goals. He no longer has Backstrom to play with. Marner's skillset would fit nicely with Ovie. The fans in Washington and across the entire league want to see history happen.
Gretzky played on such a talent laden team the likes of which we will never see again because of cap restrictions. The Oilers scored over 400 goals a season for 5 straight seasons, once nearing 450. No team before or since have ever hit 400 goals in a season. When you look at the number of assists Gretzky got was an indication of how talented his linemates were at converting the passes into goals.
Ovie never had bodyguards or a great team from the very beginning of his career.
I know Marner would benefit.
You're too young to know of a player whose name was J.C. Trembly, a defenseman with Montreal who, you would swear had the puck tied to his stick by a string. He quarterbacked Montreal's powerplay after Doug Harvey retired the first time. The problem with JC was he avoided hitting or getting hit. His last Stanley Cup with Montreal was when they upset the Bruins in 1970-71, then he jumped to the WHA and became the leagues star defenseman.
What I'm trying to say is that's was his style of play. Same with Marner. I don't think Marner cares if he wins a Cup, I think he wants a long career and not be hobbled after he retires resulting from injuries while playing in the NHL.
