You should stop thinking about suited connectors as either good or bad hands, it depends entirely on the stack depth and situation. When you are short stacked, suited connectors are not great hands but when you are deep stacked they are excellent hands! This is because of implied odds which is the amount of $$$ you stand to win on later streets when you make a very strong hand!
When you are deep-stacked, you typically want to have equity when you decide to bluff. Suited connectors are great hands to bluff with because they typically draw to straights and flushes. Being aggressive at the poker table allows you to steal the pot from your opponents, whilst still being able to outdraw them and ‘get there’ on future streets!
Suited connectors are excellent because they make straights & flushes, but remember that they also make weak 1-pair hands quite often. If you want to maximize your profits and crush your opponents at the poker table, you have to learn to recognize when your marginal poker hands should simply fold!

87s just find it weirdly aesthetically pleasing, plus it is less likely to be dominated compared to something like JTs or QJs which makes it easier to play even if it is weaker.
Any suited connector that is not clubs. Clubs will live up to their name and club you!

I love these. I am using poker coaching as well. I’m tired of being the fish at the table so i have been trying to get better at managing tilt and bankroll management. Working on 3-betting more and and also x raising too.

In a tournament a few weeks ago, I bloated the pot multi-way with middle pair + flush draw on the flop because I did not want to be up against one player with a higher flush draw and one player with a higher pair, in which case I would be in really bad shape.
I opened 9♦️8♦️ from MP and got two callers IP and one in the BB. Flop T♦️8♥️3♦️. BB donk-shoved about 1.3x pot. I shoved for roughly 3x his stack to avoid the situation above. Both remaining players had me covered. First preflop caller promptly folded. Second tank called. BB held K8o and second caller held A♦️Q♦️, so I ended up in that situation in spite of all my efforts to avoid it. A third ♦️ landed on the river for the second caller to take both the main and side pots and bust both of us.

maybe important to make sure your opponent also has a deep stack for the implied odds to pay out. if you have 80bb and they have 20bb, effectively you have 20bb. so might want to look out for that one

how long have you played for? poker has a lot of variance, it could be you play against a lot of straightforward players and struggle to get value from worse hands? just speculation tho

Hi Jonathan, at 12:44, you call again at the turn ? Vilain bet isn't too big ? I always fold flush draw or OESD at the turn if vilain bet again between 2/3 or 3/4 pot. Could you explain ? thanks for your tips !

1:56 you say suited connectors suck short stacked but im lookingn at ur gto pf charts and it says to open hands like 86s from the cutoff most of the time 20bb deep. And always open 76s Is 20bb deepstacked? Or when do you become short stacked? I’m just trying to get into context what it means for suited connectors to “suck” shirt stacked. Even HJ opens 76s most of the time 20bb deep. So from here it seems like the only hands that go from bad to playable from 20bb to 100bb are 54s and 65s.
I want my stack and my opp. to be at least 25x the bet to call is this correct

2:20 Unless I'm misreading something, looking at LJ RFI 20 BBs vs 80 BBs, 87s gets opened MORE often at 20 than 80, not less often. In general the ranges were wider at larger stack depths, but why would this specific holding be opened less often at 80 BBs than at 20?
OK this problem has been bugging me but I think I might have figured out the answer. A hand like 87s gets value from making straights and flushes and the confidence to pile money into the pot.
BUT - if your opponents' ranges consist of a lot of suited connectors too, especially broadways, you may find yourself on the wrong end of a straight. So the more broadway suited connectors your opponents have (the higher the percentage of their range that is composed of those hands), the worse 87s performs, due to reverse implied odds.
That's the only explanation I can come up with.
@@iamamish There's situations like this that come up with offsuit aces sometimes. The solver likes to play things like A2 A3 A4 but not A8 A7 A6. Possible low end straight instead of the possible bad kicker. The solver is amazing, what I love about these situations is they really make you thing long and hard about WHY it is played this way. Super great for learning!
89s is my favorite I’ve stacked people flopping a straight w it a few times haha
Yeah only problem is when flop comes 789 and you're like uh oh, lol. Suited connectors are great until you flop two pair and realize you're up against straight/flush draws all day 😅. Oh well still a great hand to play in the situations Jonathan calls out in the vid!
One of my worst folds ever is folding 89s on Q J 10 board because I was worried about AK😅
is the hand where he called 30bb in search of a flush draw. Do you always call flop and turn even if youre calling an all in on the turn? ... in all scenarios cash and tournaments? call and hope to hit no matter what?

had K5 diamond on BB pot was raised to 2BB so i called. flop is Q J 10 with 2 diamonds. At this point opponent puts me all in and I have a flush draw with an open ender... calculated the outs and seemed a pretty good call... turn and river were a bust so i got rekt by 77. Was it a good decision ? Should have i just folded the extra 1BB preflop ? this was early stage of a tournament

3:13 Are the charts backwards or something? you always open j8s 20bb deep but only open it sometimes 80bb deep. similar thing w q8s. 87s youre opening less 80bb deep then u do w 20bb. seems like the only hands u play MORE 80bb deep are 76s and 65s. so why do you value 87s less but 76s more 😵💫
sorry if im nitpicking but im hopong to get a conceptual understanding so i dont have to memorize 7 different rfi charts for all 9 positions.
What about 3 bet spots? When to defend 3 bets? When to be 3 betting?
maybe we can throw ideas off of eachother to improve. how I think in these spots is determined by what connectors you have. For example, 89 and T9 have good playability against something like queens and Jacks, because a flop that comes connected will usually lead to smaller bet sizes. Not to mention, 3 betting some of your connectors like 89 and T9 make it so you’re not only 3 betting something like AK. It’s also easier to realize your equity post flop, as your opponent leading into you after a 3 bet shows some strength
@@Ev-ly4hn It’s supposed to be a formula of EQr=Pot share/raw equity.
This formula helps us to know when spots are potentially profitable to bluff, or just continue.
Pot share is your cut of the pot, in terms of raw equity. So if the flop was But in other words, It’s when you weigh the additional factors that come with every flop. You take into account your own position, who was RFI, Stack size, blockers, pretty much all of that goes into EQr. Not an expert on it to if I’m wrong pls correct me lol
I think it's implied, but just to be clear for those watching that BOTH you and an opponent must be that many BB's deep effective not just YOU. You have to win THEIR chips. If they are only 30 BB's deep, then the situation changes. I have a friend who learned this lesson the hard way...
