@@Junelily89That’s not true for everyone though. Cassandra even notes in the video that some people with acne prone skin saw improvement in their acne when using petroleum jelly. It’s such a highly individual thing that it’s not applicable to everyone.

It's so versatile that it is a lip balm, emergency scrape protectant, and a dry skin rescue solution all in one. Saved me from getting cracked elbows and knees, and overall did a great job when I'm sealing in those skincare layers. Has been 2 decades and yep, still using it lol. It's nice for buffering my retinoids around the eye area too.
Can't leave the house without an ultra mini tub of it wherever I go (and it's a mainstay on my skincare counter). However, I could understand people being averse to it because it does not work for them (as everyone's skin is different).
For the ones fearmongering about petroleum jelly, they could potentially be missing out on the benefits (who knows?).
Same! I have super dry skin and slather it everywhere including the tips of my hair to keep it healthy. The soles of my feet stay soft because I use Vaseline before putting my socks on

My Dad was an A grade truck mechanic. He always had a giant tin of Petroleum Jelly in the house & at the Workshop - used for lubricating machine parts.
He was an avid Hunter as well, & once out alone at his camp fire - his water kettle blew up shooting boiling water on his face. It took him a day to hike to the nearest river to cool his face. By the time he got out of the forest his face was red, swollen & he could barely see his eyelids had stuck together. We did not recognise him. Despite being in pain he refused to go to the doctor. Instead he mixed a whole bottle of disinfectant called 'Camfosa' into the tin of petroleum jelly.
He slathered that on his face morning, noon & night. I thought he was going to be disfigured for life. Instead after a week the redness subsided. At 2 weeks the swelling had gone down & he could see. At 3 weeks he used his concoction as a general moisturiser & by 4 weeks his face had 100% healed.
He was in his late 50's so it wasn't youth that healed his skin. It was pretty miraculous & our family always have petroleum jelly/vaseline in the house.

Another dermatologist said petroleum jelly is about the only substance that people cannot be allergic to, or it would be exceedingly rare. I remember he said to stick to brand name Vasoline to be sure of quality. They stand behind their products.
Thanks for debunking the vaseline myths. Nothing has stopped from using it so far. I love it because it helps my neurodermatitis so much and I love it for slugging and my lips. As a German I find the background of the brandname quite funny. It never occurred to me that there was a water reference. :D

I don't know if you will see this but I have been struggling with my skin a long time and in the last few months have been getting very depressed over it. I have psoriasis on my face, but also rosacea that's new this year, and I've been so uncomfortable, so unhappy, throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it. I can't afford a derm and the NHS can only do so much. I found your vids a few weeks ago, sat and went through a lot of them, loved the science and accessible information you give. Completely overhauled my skincare with what I've learned from you and literally two weeks later I feel like a different person. The pain is gone, the itch has gone, the plaquing and flushing is under control. I don't know where I would be without what I have learned from you, I was in a really bad place and feeling so hopeless. Thank you for what you do. You saved me, I cannot tell you how much.
When I was growing up I used to hate vaseline because of the texture and how it made my skin feel. My parents always had to put some on me every winter when I got sinus infections and my nose and lips were raw. As an adult, it is the only product that works on my dry skin caused by hypothyroidism. It is extremely underrated and I wish it got more love for the succeeses it's provided people.
Have you ever tried vitamin E oil or creams? If not, it might be something to look into!
@@scarlett2249topical vitamin E has been highly ineffective for me (and in most relevant studies.) Do yourself a favor and eat the vitamin E for best results 😅

I even stopped using lotion once I realized Vaseline is more effective at keeping my skin moisturized compared to lotion. With lotion I'd get ashy within a few hours, with Vaseline, I'm good all day. The soles of my feet are also extra soft.
There are people claiming that Vaseline is banned in Europe? LOL it's literally at the supermarket for 2 euros here in France, and dermatologists prescribe it to take care of the wounds after minor surgeries. I literally use it on my lips every night 😆

I'm a chemist and I love the way you explained it. But I have to say that there are millions of hydrocarbons out there and some are very very bad for you and others are used as medicine or other great things we use on a day to day basis. I talked to a collegue of mine a few weeks ago about this topic and let me tell you she is an expert when it comes to mineral oils! They are really not that concerning, especially if you keep them away from your mouth (eating them) and when they are saturated. The only problem are the aromatic hydrocarbons which are the bad ones who could potentionally cause cancer if swallowed. If you want to inform yourself just read a bit about MOSH and MOAH :)
But how about many lipbalms that contains mineral oils then, are they safe?

@alfiarahma613 I don't know how other country's handle it but in Germany lip balms get tested because they often contain mineral oils and you basically eat them over time. But don't be concerned, it's very rare that they find MOAH concentrations above the limit :)

My grandma told me Vaseline did smell a bit like petrol back in the day, but they kept using because of how good it was, even on babies
For someone like myself who has Sahara desert dry skin and papulopustular rosacea this ingredient is skin saving for me.
Oh my god i am struggling with papulopustular rosacea too. Does vaseline really helps? I've been trying to find a good moisturizer for months now.
I had really bad eczema and tried just about every lotion, cream, oatmeal, honey, hydrocortisone etc. The doctor recommended Aquaphor healing ointment, which has 41% petrolatum along with antibiotics. It healed my skin completely. I was amazed!
I’m using it too for my three year old daughter. Or on our lips, it softens quickly.

The vaseline lip therapy range has been so much more effective and soothing for my chronically chapped lips (I constantly forget to drink water) than expensive lipbalms and lip masks. When I used to have to see dentists/orthodontists often, I’d ask for them to apply it to my lips and the skin around my mouth to reduce cracking/splitting of my skin. And the vaseline lip therapy products are SUPER AFFORDABLE, compared to all those expensive branded products.

So great to hear someone else say what I’ve been saying! And to add onto this, to everyone that says mineral sunscreen is “natural” but the rest (chemical/organic) are “unnatural” than why would another mineral based product like Vaseline be “unnatural” all of a sudden? We have to really look into the source and chemical compositions and full process to understand an ingredient and not just assume whatever is popular in the medical field is automatically toxic.

I originally decided to stop using petrolatum knowing that it was directly from the oil industry and I wanted to divest from that as much as possible. But later realized that as long as we drill for oil, it’s going to be a byproduct and it’s probably more environmentally friendly to give it purpose rather than dump it 🤷🏽♀️ now, i just don’t use it because of all the slug references 😭

I love Vaseline for skin. I used to do my husband's dialysis, and the constant hand washing made the skin on the back of my hands raw. It was very painful. Vaseline healed my hands in a few hours and prevented future damage.

I think the "vasaline cause acne" thing has more to do with people not cleaning their face's property before putting it on their face cause the little specs of dirt and dead skin cells to be trapped under the layer of vasaline.

I've always been a little concerned when using Vaseline because uneducated people who's seen a 60 second video on the internet saying it's toxic and will definitely cause pimples have fearmongered me all my life into believing that vaseline is bad but I'm not dumb so I don't just believe hearsay, I like to see facts, scientific studdies and proof and you're just serving the facts and now I know I don't have to fear it at all and if it's refined, it won't kill me if I use it on wounds or on my lips. My right eyelid tends to get dry for whatever reason lol😅 but then I apply a thin layer vaseline to it if I don't have Moisturizer on me. Thanks again. I would gladly share this with all the people that says it's such a horrible thing. I think companies push this idea on the internet because they want people to use their expensive products instead of just cheap vaseline.
Yes, I've used this before as a child and currently when I use Aquaphor. I appreciate the extensive research you put into this video. It's very enlightening. I went to school for esthetics in the late 70's and mineral oil and petroleum/petratum were seen as the devil incarnate for skin. To this day I avoid it except as I stated above. So for my peace of mind, and my money, I prefer to use Eucerin Essential Oil Balm and other naturally thick oils such as shea butter oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter oil etc. I think plant-based oils are closer to my skin's own sebum and I just feel safer using it. I'd like to link this video to two of mine though, to give my subscribers a different point of view other than my own. I appreciate all you do to educate everyone. Thanks!😊
Im one of those people who will get bumbs, whiteheads, welts, and/blackheads from continuously using products with petroleum or petroletum.
I use it for my lips (Carmex) but if I get it over my lup line, I will occasionally get a clogged pore.
I don't even use products that contain it such as bodylotions or face creams. My skin hates it.
I LOVE 💕 vaseline. Huge improvement in dry lips.

I didn't even realise there's a rumor of vaseline being banned in Europe, that's hilarious (in a weird, sad way) - here in Denmark you can buy the classic Chesebrough vaseline in like every supermarket and several other kinds I'm sure (but I'm a creature of habit and go for the good old yellow tin haha). I have a skin condition I'm currently dealing with and even my doctor recommended vaseline to help

Very informative! I’ve noticed that a lot of high-priced lip balms have petroleum jelly or petrolatum listed as one of the first ingredients.
In winter when it's freezing a thin layer of vasaline really helps your skin to stay healthy. We have a famous skatingtour here on nature ice which only is held in very cold winters and those skaters are absolutely covered in vasaline to have any skin left after 230 km of ice skating.

It is actually a really good barrier when you want to benefit from your skin care products.
a layer of it, on top of whatever skin care with active ingredients will make sure that everything stays on your skin (it can't evaporate under Vaseline) and can't react with the surroundings (like how your vitamin C gets oxidized from the air after some time on your face -if you use L-ascorbic acid) because the molecule is so huge
It's like putting a wrapper on top of your skincare
Actually putting vaseline on top of actives can make them lil too irritating so be careful
I use cetomacrogol for my face because of "clown" eczema and dry spots and it has 20% vaseline in it. It did wonders for my skin. ❤😊
Cassandra… we NEED a video with your thoughts on acne supplements. Brands like ClearWithin are getting popular but I want to know what you think of them.
My concern with petrolatum is that it could potentially bind any sort of oil based vitamins or actives ( retinol, vitaminE ) so that they can't get into the skin as easily. I say this bc many years ago, I remember reading that taking mineral oil for constipation would bind and carry oil based vitamins out of the body
I know they aren't the same thing but they are both sourced from the earth, versus animals or plants.

In the UK just make sure the product is marked Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly 'BP'
The BP [British Pharmacopoeia] marking indicates it is in compliance with the authoritative official standards for UK pharmaceutical substances and medicinal products. I believe many other countries have adopted the standards or have developed their own similar systems. It is very cheap and has endless uses, from dealing with nappy rash to waterproofing pit boots.
Omg thank you!! My son had horribly severe eczema when he was 6 months old. We were scrambling to keep his skin under control, the poor kid was mutilating himself. His doc recommended we use PJ. When my mom found out, she treated me like I was basically smoking with him in my lap. And she would straight refuse to use it when she watched him. I appreciate the info! ❤
Vaseline jelly is ok for me in a pinch as a lip balm, but I’ve always wondered why my super dry skin feels suffocated when I put a lil too much on my eczema. I know skin doesn’t technically breathe but? Either way I’ve recently found Vaseline’s advanced body moisturiser the best at healing and keeping my skin plump & comfortable most of the day, with little to no irritation, it’s even great on my face 😁 and I’ve tried soo many, so I’m glad it’s cheap af too 😅

Vaseline was one of my favorites and didn’t want to give it up, but was afraid it may be harmful due to the petroleum. Thank you for clearing it up. I feel much better about continuing to use it. One question: Do you think there could be any contaminated remnants leftover after the triple purification process or is everything dangerous pretty much burnt up during the purification process?
It has been suggested to stick to name brand Vaseline (as it is not like it is all that much more expensive) and Vaseline regularly tests for just this sort of thing to prevent it from reaching market.
Oh, in winter you can use vasaline on the rubbers of your car doors so your doors don't freeze shut. Just a fun fact.

I love the vaseline cocoa butter healing jelly. Smells so good and I put it under my eyes.
I am watching this while applying a thin layer of Vaseline on my skin 💖 My favourite petroleum product is the healing ointment from Elastoplast, as it is vaseline with some extra ingredients, like panthenol.
I have weak skin from having EDS; it tears easily and heals slowly. I also have a hard time using bandaids because adhesive can cause rashes or literally rip more skin off when I take them off. So what do I use when I get a cut or scrape (which is often)? Vaseline! It helps so much in sealing the injury so it doesn’t get infected, and then it can literally make things heal twice as fast for me. I haven’t found another product that works for that (liquid bandaids have latex which I’m allergic to) so when people bash petroleum skincare all I can do is laugh. Vaseline and similar products are a godsend, I’d love to have them live a day in my shoes with and without it!
My youngest had awful eczema when she was a toddler. The only thing that worked was to cover her in this balm we got at a local herbal shop and then seal that in with aquaphor. Poor kid would scratch until she bled otherwise. Luckily she seems to have grown out of it.

Hmmm. Vaseline has been around so long that I find it strange it would still be tested on animals. At this point in time it must not be tested on animals and be “cruelty-free.”
Sometimes its not the actual company testing on animals but sometimes its a market. For example, China regulations is they test imports on animals. Thats why Cerave isnt cruelty free. Cerave dont directly test on animals but they allow the chinese government to test on animals to allow cerave to be sold there. It could be the same case with Vaseline
@@louis4809 I see. I didn’t know that but, again, Vaseline has been around for decades, and I would think testing would have stopped, by now, in all countries. I’m thinking you may have more knowledge on this. Perhaps testing is done in countries systematically, no matter how long the product has been around. Thank for you for any additional information.
In addition to what @louis4809 said, Vaseline has several products and are always making more, so it might not be the petrolatum jelly itself that is tested on animals. But any allowance of animal testing means the brand itself is not cruelty free.
@@theresatomasello1843 i agree with what @kelsey6703 said. Vaseline makes many different products and are releasing new products. For example they have body lotions, which are newer. These could have been tested on animals or not but a market like China still requires them to be. Also any formulation change, for example if they adjust the lotion to have slightly more petrolatum in it, that new formulation has to be tested all over again. So if Vaseline do test on animals, their new products and formluations will be tested on animals. If they dont test on animals, it could be markets like china who are testing their new products and formulations. Additionally, formulations take many many attempts in the lab to get correct. There could be 20 versions of the lotion and the one on sale is the final version. All of those versions would have been tested too.
It's not tested on animals, but it's sold in markets where animal testing is required to have to product approved (and that's done by the government of said country, not the manufacturer). Their parent company Unilever has phased out animal testing since the 1980s. As bad as animal testing is, people are so crazy to jump onto brands for selling in China but I see every single beauty influencer cruelty-free or not promoting tretinoin (which is tested on animals). Like animal testing isn't the most ethical thing, but I'm sure 99% of people who shill cruelty-free brands use non-essential products that aren't cruelty-free (Tylenol, Visine, OTC allergy medication, literally any OTC medication or prescription medication, personal lubricant, most brands of anti-perspirant, most brands of toothpaste, etc.) Never seen a single influencer tell you not to use lube if you want to support cruelty-free brands.
Thanks for this video. The only thing I’ll say is when the fire inspector came to inspect for our lip balm business we had to give him ingredient information because he talked about petroleum jelly and flammability. And we would have had to jump through a few more hoops.

I love the tubes of Vaseline medical grade. I was buying expensive eye ointment and ingredients were petroleum jelly and mineral oil. Now after cleansing my face and eyes I put Vaseline around my eyes, eyelashes and waterline. Gives nighttime relief to extreme dry eyes and softens lines. I'll use Vaseline after moisturizer on lines and dry patches. Keeps lips soft and nails moisturized. Any cuts or scratches gets a coating and great on kitties paws to keep them soft.

i buy lotions i like the smell of & then take 2 parts that 4 part cerve, mix them together. then i take half to 1 part vaseline & mix that in about 1/4 at a time to make a hand cream that works to heal my hands in the winter. it allows me to wear a lotion that smells nice, wears for ages & isn't too greasy. it works amazing. i adjust the amount of vaseline by how dry my hands are & keep it in a refillable pump bottle on my desk, bathroom counter & bedside table. my eczema normally doesn't let me do scented stuff but with the low dilution i can handle it. i used to use just the cerve & vaseline. kinda a tangent, but thought i would share if anyone else finds it a bit greasy or doesn't care for the scent.

Vaseline is a great and safe product for dry spots on the body, but avoiding it on the lips and around the nose is best.
Vaseline cannot be broken down by our body and can cause health problems if inhaled or ingested (like lipoid pneumonia). The Danish consumer council (Forbrukerrådet Tænk) have gone out to tell people to minimize use on the lips/nose until more is known about its effects, but otherwise recommends use since it (as you said) is great for dry skin, eczema, and small wounds. It's in Danish, but I can link it if anyone is interested.
A great alternative to vaseline for the lip/nose area is lanolin, which is very similar in consistency and properties. I use Vaseline on the rest of my body and face though.:) Vaseline is also great for protecting your skin against extreme cold, and a thin layer is great for preventing swimsuit and wetsuit chafing
I use it on my front baby hair and eyebrows to grow before I go to bed. Has not failed me.

I have always used it since a child. I’ve used it on my hands and feet with white socks and gloves. Use it on my lips and eyes if irritated. Use it on my elbows and knees when dry. I can’t sleep with it on my face but I do use it on my neck and décolletage.

If you have dry skin and want a “natural” product (and I say that ironically because we all know that means nothing 😂) try lotion bars. You can buy solid lotion or you can make it yourself. One part beeswax, one part solid unrefined coconut oil, and one part shea/cocoa/mango butter. You don’t need any preservatives and it’s super easy and inexpensive to make. You can throw a bar in your purse and have it with you everywhere. It’s a LIFESAVER if you have dry hands or have to wash your hands a lot. You can also use it as lip balm. My favorite company is called Made On. But I just make my own. Melt it all in the microwave and pour into a container that’s a shape that works for you. I use small bowls to make body bars and silicone mini cupcake pan for purse bars. It’s a game-changer! Plus,to the bars are 100% edible and can even be organic if that matters for you (I used them on my kids when they were babies, so that mattered to me for a while). ❤
I get eczema in winter time. Mostly on my hands. ( I live in Canada, and winters can be cold and dry). I use Vaseline to prevent and cure it. It works better than medicated eczema creams, and it's safer. I even used it on my eyelid.
Refined sugar might be defined as natural too, but it is not healthy.
Why I do not like mineral oil or petroleum products is they do clog my pores every time. They do provide a moisture barrier, but that is surface level. Plant oils have always worked better for me, save for calendula homeopathic ointment in petroleum gel for inside the nose.
Bingo! 👏 Just because most people can tolerate sugar doesn't mean that it's okay for a diabetic to enjoy the same amounts of sugar as the rest of the people around them. It's the same for petrolatum and mineral oils(albeit not nearly as serious as a diabetic and sugar, lol).
My skin is a lot like yours. Any time I use mineral oils, petrolatum, or even coconut oil on my skin, my acne flares up like gangbusters. It's too occlusive and ends up trapping too much bad stuff in my pores. I have worked very hard to get my skin so clear and healthy that I barely wear makeup anymore. The last thing I want to do is destroy those amazing results because a couple of complete strangers said it's okay to slather my face with something that I know has caused acne flare-ups in the past. Any time I have talked to a dermatologist, they have all told me to avoid mineral oils, petrolatum, and other petroleum-based products. I have a small list of ingredients saved in my phone to avoid in skincare and cosmetics for my acne. It's quite astounding as to how many anti-acne skincare items I have found to contain highly comedogenic ingredients. Isopropyl myristate is one of the worst offenders.
Long story short, use logic and listen to your body when it comes to skincare.
I use it under my eyes after applying my eye creams. It holds the moisture in.
I've found the italian version of vaseline that is cruelty free and I just love it for my lipsss🙃

In the right quantities and with the right research and control, it could even easily be used for medical applications, I mean some snake venom is just a supercharged muscle relaxant or nerve blocker

Lol I am not on TikTok so I didn’t even know this was a big thing on there 😂 petroleum jelly is literally like the only thing me and my family use on our skin. It’s been really beneficial for me and my oldest son in particular who both struggle with really sensitive skin and also very dry skin. I’m sure there are people out there who it doesn’t work for but for us it’s been amazing.
