    My experience with the SaGa games is all old-school. I first dove into it with Final Fantasy Legend III, then went back and played FFLI+II. I owned SaGa Frontier and SaGa Frontier II on my PS1. SaGa Frontier II was such a beautiful “water color picture come to life” experience that is still stands as my favorite of what I have played, so far.
    I have SaGa Frontier 2 and 3 downloaded on my Switch. They are backlogged, but look nice. I would like to have physical copies of them.
    I have looked at The Romancing SaGa series for decades and seen mixed reviews. I am thinking very hard of getting all the physical SaGa games on Switch as physical carts so I will always have them.
    I plan to check out this demo, mostly because of your video. I’m happy about adding another good JRPG to my ever growing library.
    Thanks! 😉

    The Steam demo is my first experience with SaGa but it seems like all the budget went into the battles, writing, and music. It gave me whiplash how nice the battles looked and sounded compared to the still image storytelling. The overworld travel, cutscenes, etc. did not see as much attention. This is not a bad thing perse, there are some advantages to having simple a simple overworld, but it's mostly just budget imo. I spent several hours on the demo and have to say I really enjoyed it, the music was incredible

    Thanks for the information about Diffrent character been avaliable depending on the system.
    My story went: Witch World (+side Quest except Black Witch as I didn't understand the combat system ad that time) and then Yomi where I meet Dolares (My favorite character so far, granted didn't see 2 other gates).
    This is my first SaGa game and would honestly have miss it, had someone on Discord not recommend it.

    Just got done with the demo on Steam and it's a Day 1 buy for me. It hit all the nostalgia buttons for me from seeing Mr. S to having a Saw skill causing instant death. The world nexus? reminds me of Final Fantasy Legend II and I played that for many hours on the Game Boy. Besides that, I really enjoyed the combat system and character customization. It's really complex but the decision making is fun.
    I'm looking forward to the story and seeing how all the characters tie together.

    I played Romancing a while back but it was translated, and got super stuck with Frontier 2 with how hard it was. I played SaGa Frontier remaster a couple years back and absolutely fell in love, it felt like the first time i played Demons Souls, where its a journey to overcome the challenges and understand how to play the unorthodox game and eventually master the systems. After that i was hooked and went and played SaGa 1 2 3 on gameboy and absolutely loved 1 and 2 especially. Looking forward to this game and hopefully tackling Romancing 1 2 3, Unlimited, Frontier 2 and Scarlet Grace

    If you have been a fan of SaGa in the west since the release of SaGa Frontier, then you've probably accepted the fact that SaGa's not for everyone. It's not out of gatekeeping or anything like that--it's just that the series has always been known for being experimental and obtuse, which is a turnoff for players new to the series or even new to JRPGs.
    It's amazing how a series that looks like a JRPG and plays like a WRPG tends to alienate both audiences.

    j/k
    I played the first four SaGa games (the three Gameboy titles and Romancing SaGa 1 on the SNES). I was really not a fan of the non-linear open-ended style of RS and thought the game dragged on forever without getting to the point and fell off the series. I've been cautiously curious about this new entry and remain completely neutral towards it after your review, but I do appreciate you helping give more details about the game experience. Tried playing a SaGa game once, but the ONE thing that I HATED about those games was PERMADEATH!!! Never played another one like it again. So, I'm playing the demo right now, and I actually like it. Cause turned based RPG gaming is just right up my alley, and NO PERMADEATH. What I like about this game is that there's no end in sight and the stories are based on what you choose. The story is in your hands is what I feel in this game. I may get it eventually, but I may wait for a sale someday.

    • @killerb255
      @killerb255 Před 2 měsíci +1

      The only SaGa game that truly has (virtually) 100% permadeath is Romancing SaGa 2. That's probably the harshest SaGa game overall.
      The other SaGa games have various penalties for having a character reach LP=0:
      - Romancing SaGa 3: Character is kicked out of your party, not recruitable again until you defeat one of the four major bosses of the game. If a character does reach LP=0 during the endgame (when all four of the major bosses have been defeated), then it might as well be permadeath. If your Protagonist reaches LP=0 it's Game Over.
      - Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song: Character is kicked out of your party, and you just need to wait a certain amount of time before you can re-recruit them. There are a few characters that can only be recruited once, so an LP=0 might as well be permadeath, but that only applies to mercenaries, Brau, Sylvan, True Darque, the Dragon Knight, and (in the original PS2 version) Frielei (you can re-recruit Frielei in the remaster). Again, if your Protagonist reaches LP=0 it's Game Over.
      - SaGa Frontier: Character is out of commission until you rest at an inn. That's it. Protagonist LP=0 is still Game Over, though.
      - SaGa Frontier 2: Character is out of commission until you rest at an inn. Protagonist LP=0 is still Game Over.
      - Unlimited Saga: Character is out of commission until the end of the mission (where everyone is restored to full LP). Protagonist LP=0 is still Game Over.
      - SaGa Scarlet Grace: Character is out of commission for a certain number of battles. This includes your Protagonist, so LP=0 for them is NOT an automatic Game Over! I never tried LP-killing every character in my party and then battling though--that might be one of the few ways to Game Over in Scarlet Grace.

    Personally I'm kind of hoping that they don't let you go back and do the quests you chose to pass up. I can hear the OCD JRPG players screaming at my comment but it would really add a nice layer of choice & consequence we really don't get in JRPG's. Plus it would force players forward so they don't get stuck in an endless side quest hunting/grinding feedback loop.

      Have you played SaGa Scarlet Grace? That game does just that in many ways. End result: I had to spend 1200+ hours on that game in order for the guide I wrote on GameFAQs to be as comprehensive as it is! I'm not saying that as a flex...I'm saying that to show one of the possible consequences of your line of thinking.
      I also did that because other players won't want to do that much! There are so many games out there competing for players' time, and developers need to take that into consideration now.

    • @BossBash86
      @BossBash86 Před 2 měsíci

      @@killerb255 They 100% do not need to take that into consideration. Lets be real: SaGa games for the most part have never been a paragon of things like "player friendliness" or "respecting players time", hell your comment about your guide you wrote is testament to that. SaGa games are more akin to old German DOS RPG's where they'll give you a great experience but they expect you to play by their rules or suffer, it's what SaGa players come for and it's what they expect, it's part of the franchises charm.

    3:16 Might just be me, but I've found that a lot of recent JRPG's have had some pretty funny translations. Whether that's because the actual line in Japanese was quite funny and that Japanese can in fact be very funny, or just English translators have been taking a lot of liberties with their translations to make lines actually funny to western audiences, I can't really say. Works for me though.

    Does anyone else think it's a little embarrassing how small the budget is for these games? Surely Square Enix could spring for something a bit more polished than static images with no voice acting in place of actual cutscenes. Both this and Scarlet Grace are just so hideous and cheap looking, especially with that horrible filter they apply to the characters. Plus they are charging the same price for this as they are for Star Ocean: The Second Story R which is a million times more polished in every way. I just don't get it.

      The budget's small because SaGa simply doesn't sell as much as other AA titles. We are a small but loyal fanbase--keyword: "small." Small fanbase = lower budget.

      It is sad as someone who loves SaGa but turn based JRPGs are kind of a dying breed so I take what I can get. Especially ones that pride themselves on having some difficulty!
      I totally understand that it can be a turn off for a lot of people with the pop up book graphics and static cutscenes.
      Emerald Beyond is a huge step up for the series graphically and the combat is a refined version of SSG's already amazing battle system. Still need work on the art and stuff, but I'm hoping it does well so maybe I can get some voice acting for the next game.

    I've tried to get into a lot of the SaGa games (specifically, the Final Fantasy Adventure games and the first Romancing SaGa), but the only one that ever really clicked with my is Frontier. Don't know if that counts as a good SaGa or a weird SaGa; I'm of the opinion that it's both, but I tend to like weird. I think a big part of it is that it has such a beautiful and wondrous universe to explore, but I do like the weirdly quirky battle system, the fact that they FINALLY got the stat leveling from Final Fantasy 2 to work, the unorthodox but surprisingly deep and progressive characters and stories (Asellus's life is so eerily similar to my own), and that soundtrack has taken residence in my SOUL. Seriously, it might be my all-time favorite RPG full stop; I replayed it last October and it kicked long-reigning champ Live-A-Live (which I'm not sure I even have the patience for anymore) right off that mountain. Not totally sure if I'd be into this SaGa either, but if I do wind up playing and enjoying it, I'm sure it'll be for totally different reasons; I think SaGa Frontier is doomed to be one of those games I want more of, but the rest of the franchise is just too different to satisfy that, like with Legacy of the Wizard.

  • @phubans
    @phubans Před 2 měsíci

    The graphics look so bland and cheap, especially when they put those static, generic anime character illustrations over those really uninspired backgrounds. Like damn... I wouldn't recognize this as a SaGa game if you didn't tell me. I will happily stick to the original trilogy for this series.
    EDIT: My history with this series is that Final Fantasy Legend was the first handheld RPG I ever owned, way back in 1989. I have fond memories of playing it in the car, in bed, on the toilet, etc. FFL2 was even better and became my favorite game in the series. FFL3 was one I wanted to like, but it leaned a little too heavily into the sci-fi themes for my liking; I loved the medieval and mythological flavors of the first two games quite a bit. I learned so much about mythological creatures from those games because I'd look up the creatures referenced on an old Encyclopedia Britannica CD rom I had in the early 90s. I've also played the Wonderswan Color remake of FFL (Makaitoushi SaGa) and the DS remake of FFL2 but never got around to playing the DS remake of FFL3. I should get around to that!

    So, this main guy, he uses... puppets? Literally the first thing I thought of was Cornet and Kururu from Rhapsody!! Tell me he gets a Ledgem. Any game with a cute bunny casting Meteor spells is gonna be a good time, as far as I'm concerned.
    SaGa is WILD. My husband and I are both huge into it, but I find it interesting that we started at two different points. My first encounter with SaGa was on the Gameboy. I had Final Fantasy Legend II and III as a kid, but my husband got started with SaGa Frontier because he didn't have a Gameboy. But while we both love certain titles of the series, we both absolutely HATE some, too. Like, WTF even was Unlimited SaGa?! That was a mess. I never did figure it out. I find it funny that Akitoshi Kawazu has been the lead on some of my favorite games ever, and some of the games I despise the most. I have shouted "DAMN IT, KAWAZU!" a few times while playing his games. XD
    It looks like this is one of those games where every choice matters, and you'll be thinking about every decision you make as it radically changes what your course will be. You didn't mean to get sent away that fast to a new world, get a robot spy, and then suddenly get him exiled. But you thought like in any other RPG game to explore, talk, get some clues and your bearings. I'm not sure if I like that or not? But it IS interesting. The end result could either be a total blast or a total bust.

    Saga and I don't have a good history. The gameboy ones annoyed me for various reasons, only bothering to beat one of them, and then later on one I played had story progression tied to party level but nothing told me that so I just went around fighting everything and got to a point where I was too late to do anything and basically got stuck. I looked up a guide and found the problem was I leveled up too much and would basically need to restart the game. I was like F this and returned the game to the friend I was borrowing it from and never went to another Saga game again.

    Romancing SaGa 2 is one of the finest RPGs of the 16 bit era and it’s such a shame it took them until 2017 to release it in the US. I think the view of the series would be vastly different had the Romancing trilogy been released here in its era. Saga Frontier was too much of a shock to many fans who only knew Square for FF at that point. The only 2 games in the series I would call weird is the third game in the series-because it isn’t a SaGa and Unlimited Saga-well, because it’s fucking weird-though I have finished 5 of the 7 stories. I’ve been with the series most of my life and will continue until Mr. Kawazu decides to retire. So excited for this game!
