- This Caterpillar hasn't been started for ten years because of a broken pony engine. We made replaced pony motor with a hydraulic motor to get it started. Starting the main engine required almost ten minutes of cranking and some ether.

Great job guys...hope she gets restored and is back to work.....
Don't know who was more excited, you or the little girl. Good video, really enjoyed it. Would be interested in seeing a picture of the hydraulic starter motor and how it connected to the D8 motor. I ran 36A's way back when and then 46A's, 66V, 90K, and well....I can't remember them all anymore. Also that's why I say ..... what? anytime someone first speaks to me. Fond memories though.
wow that was amazing.Well done to all involved
Love to hear that turbo whistle
the engine sounds great
@bchs98 Injection pump is so badly worn, that it can't pump fuel trough nozzles on starting rpm. We need to use ether to give it enough rpm to get it running. Good indication for that is that there hardly no smoke when we crank it. The second, but more serious damage is, that the condor bearing damaged during first start, so I have to take the engine part, reground the crankshaft and install new bearings. You are right about that turbo. In real life it sounds even louder! :D
2:51 was awesome, you got a great daughter that is very addicted in starting that old machine.
Awakens!! after a long nap
Very nice.
Nothing better than old iron running again
@NesteHukka2 Yes. The conrod brearing had seized and had 1mm of clearance. The plan is to rebuild the engine this winter.
Id like to see the old girl recovered :)
that is one strong turbo on her
IT"S ALIVE !
I can't believe the hydraulics still work!
@ONEOLDCHIEF I try to get pictures about the hydraulic set up. I been forgetting about it, but i will eventually get you some photos. That set up is only a hydraulic gear pump(which is now used as a hydraulic motor), that we mounted were ponymotor used to be. The flywheel was mounted on the hydraulic motor. 20gpm hydraulic motor will give you enough cranking speed for start. You need to get that hydraulic motor turning about 2000-3000rpm.
If that turbo was any louder, if you can ignore the sound of the diesel itself, you'd think a small jet fighter was nearby
Fixing the engine in this tractor will be very expensive. Lots of things have probably rotted off in 10 years, and the cost of pulling that shaft and turning it as well as a bearing set, maybe a sleave and piston set, go through the valves and injectors, ouch, OOOHHH, mucho bucks. But---I love it when old iron gets a new chance at life.
they do make a 24 volt starter setup that replaces the pony engine all you would have to do is mount a battery box off the side and runs the cables we had a old d7 used daily pulling a cable pan and had it changed over
nice dozer. I much preferred the older cats to the next gen of power shift.
You know you could build 2 Cadillac's or 32 Hyundai's with that war-horse. CAT POWER!
Thumbs up! ( I Dig it :-)
That turbo makes my third leg arise..!
what kind of turbo is that??
Quais são as diferenças do D8K e o D8H?
O ruído da turbina deste motor é uma melodia!
Saudações
why was the camera so far away while trying to start it?
Did they build the d8h in the days of the cable blades?
Whats the story behind this farm, looks like a lot of machinery's been sitting for awhile.
@784plb That could be an option, but since this doesn't have the glow plugs, I would be forced to use ether on cold starts. This hydraulic startes is only a temporary solution to get the machine moving. I have already rebuild the ponymotor. When I get the main engine repaired, I'll put the pony engine back.
I would think that they could easily rig up an accumulator of some kind to make the machine self-starting. Motorized Life Boats on merchant vessels use that very setup. Of course, the engine would need to be in a healthier state than it is now or you no accumulator could, um, accumulate enough reserve pressure to ever get it fired.

no kidding!
man that turbo really sings. Whats wrong with the main engine?
It was partly so noisy because the bowl was off the air cleaner
tracks look incredibly loose
Turbocharger whistle as same plane turbine running sound
I don't know if i got this right, but is a pony engine a smaller engine used to crank the big main engine? Kind of like a starter motor that runs on gas?
Yes.
the starting engines for these Cats are 25 horsepower.
Eilif Finsaas yes
Is she around and doing work on the farm yet, or still a work in progress? My work requires me to go to mine sites all over Australia, and I see a lot of this one's descendants. Even for its day, it's massive. Although park it alongside the current D9, D10 and D12, and you get some idea of what people "got by" with by comparison

That D8H 36A is missing a roller on the left side. The track isn't straight.
Wonderful observation ,I hope the owners read that and correct that problem before any further operation. Could lead to damaged track and further expense to fix it.
Convert it to electric start. It's not that hard to do, and these Cats with the old style fuel pump start better on electric start than the later ones that had factory electric start.
but the pony motor start is easier on the main engine. allows the main to develop oil pressure under low load so the bearings will last forever. and no reason to use ether even in extreme cold. the only reason they changed the system to pure electric start is beacuse it became cheaper to manufacture them that way.
Back when we knew how to make shit!!!! What a beut!
don't understand why people left behind a such expensive equipment for a such cheap reason.
bet you made a lot of wasp mad there
good lok ,nice buldozer
TURBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'd like to see some closeup photos of your hydraulic pony motor conversion you made also, as would a friend of mine with several old Cats. If you could kindly email some to d082088@yahoo.com IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED !! Please put "Cat hydraulic pony motor" in the subject line so I won't delete it by mistake for spam. Thanks so much, good luck on your rebuild/resto !! Love to see old iron crank up and live again !!!!
NEVER USE ETHER!!!!!
Scrap it.
