    In this stellar episode of AJIO Presents The Ranveer Show, we host Dr. Vikram Sampath. He is a popular Indian historian, noted for authoring biographies of Gauhar Jaan and V. D. Savarkar.
    Bangalore-based historian Dr. Vikram Sampath is the author of 8 acclaimed books of history including biographies of Gauhar Jaan & Veer Savarkar & Bravehearts of Bharat on unsung heroes of India. He was elected as a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Historical Society of the UK, a winner of the Sahitya Akademi's first Yuva Puraskar in English literature & the ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Research in New York. He has a Ph.D. in history & music from the University of Queensland, is a trained Carnatic vocalist & has established India's 1st digital sound archive for vintage gramophone recordings called the Archive of Indian Music.
    This video is a breakdown of the Indian Freedom Struggle. The Indian independence movement was a series of historic events with the ultimate aim of ending British rule in India. It lasted from 1857 to 1947. Few leaders followed a more violent approach, than the others. This became especially popular after the Rowlatt Act, which permitted indefinite detention. The Act sparked protests across India, especially in the Punjab province, where they were violently suppressed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Indian independence movement was in constant ideological evolution.
    He is one of the most knowledgeable guests on the show. Hope you enjoy this episode.

    I’ve been studying Ramayan for years and I don’t understand why ppl keep saying that Ramayan has very linear characters. Each character have so much subtlety. Bharat wasn’t perfect, Sugreev wasn’t perfect, same with Dasarath. Even look at Raam, he was so full of emotions. The fact that each character is so human is why I love this book.

It’s very clear raam broke protocol and went against scripture to uphold a greater dharma. Unless I’m reading a very different ramayan from the rest of the world 😂

      @@dvine3488 Its not about Good or Bad. Thee are just qualitie of every Human Being. What was important was who sided with Dharma. Dharma is defined by Yudhistira as follow - One needs to protect Dharma (Righteous order of Justice) based on these things in the Descending order - "What is Good for you, What is Good for your Family, What is Good for your Kingdom, What is Good for your Civilization, What is Godo for the World".
      So one should prioritize what is Good for them last, Over other things like Family, Country, World. Mahabharat War was not fought to defend Pandava's Honor, It was fought to save the world fom Wicked Kauravas who had broguht Corruption and Evil in the Society.

    In addition to being the grandest epic of India, the Mahabharata also pioneered the idea of non-linear story telling which is followed by many movies and novel plots today. The story of Mahabharata actually starts many generations AFTER the war with a descendent of Pandavas doing yagna blissfully unaware of his own identity and history. The story unfolds as a flashback retold by a serpent that appears in the yagna!! Even within this retelling there are multiple backstories of varying depths to give sufficient depth to even minor characters of the story. This innovative structure is also a reason why the epic has outlasted all other tales.

    It appears Dr. Sampath has not read the Mahabharata. He mentioned that Pandava departed from their Kingdom and proceeded to the Himalayas after killing everyone else in the war.
    Yudhishthira ruled for almost 36 years after he won the war. It was time for them to retire due to old age. He would be in his late nineties at that time. Therefore, they crowned Parikshit, son of Abhimanyu, and then proceeded towards the Himalayas.

It is crucial for us to explore and popularize these texts, ensuring their accessibility to the general public. When you approach the Mahabharata in the light of Kriya Yoga, you realise that the Kurukshetra War is but a metaphor for the battle between good and bad action within each individual. Shri Lahiri Mahasaya sets it out in the finest of details in his commentary of the Bhagavad Gita, which can be found at the Yoga Niketan online library. Ipso facto the question about the reality of the Mahabharata becomes redundant.

    • @AshwinSriram
      @AshwinSriram Před rokem

      Even the great sage Sri Ramana Maharshi explained the Mahabharata as an internal battle between good and bad forces within each of us. But I also think one can interpret Mahabharata through the lens of actual historic events (although some of the story-telling may have elements of embellishment). I think as 'itihasa' it implies the telling of events that actually happened but the way it is told may also reveal many symbolic or metaphoric meanings which are left for the reader to explore on their own. I think Vikram in the clip gives a good account of what itihasa really means through the use of that sloka. Spirituality allows for nuances and subjective interpretations of ancient texts in so far as it helps the seeker advance in the right direction. Even the Ramayana is symbolically interpreted through the lens of Vedanta in the scripture 'Adhyatma Ramayana' so both the 'actual' and the 'metaphoric' versions of the story find relevance.

    Scholars who differ in their thoughts or views, why don't they come forward and have an open discussion to find out the truth?
    For example: If X has some evidence which proves Mr. A was great man, whereas Y has evidence too which proves Mr. A was a bad man and both X and Y publishes books stating their views and citing their evidences for the general readers. But then why Mr. X and Mr. Y do not confront each other and delve into a discussion to find out the truth, instead it is left for the general readers to find out the truth among the two views, where the general readers does not even have the primary sources or the intellect to assess.
    Isn't this a good way to earn money through book selling? Maybe the scholars have an unwritten understanding that no one shall come across their way, so that both can sell their books.

Many don't know some facts about him like - He was the Greatest Spear Warrior of his Era and he ate only once a day, Lived a simple life of Honor and Dignity. He prioritzed Dharma over everything else. He can be considered a Great Role-model for Judges today in the Court of Law.
