As a Dutchman I was surprised people said the US had a good chance to win, while basically everyone knew beforehand how to beat the US. The Netherlands waited calmly for a chance and pushed at the right moments. Whenever the US seemed confident that confidence was crushed within minutes.

Cannot believe Ferreira started this game. I saw him play with nervous first touches, and constantly play the safe backwards pass vs the proactive pass continuing the attack. He was playing like he just didnt want to make a mistake. How can you expect a player like him (who looked extremely shaky in qualifying) to be confident playing his first minutes in the biggest game of the tournament? Bad coaching from Gregg. Gio should have started that game.
Tactical disaster for berhalter, Van Gaal out classed him.

Good post. However, there’s no excuse to turn off during a match of this magnitude. When you are not aware of where the opponents are at, it’s an issue. I don’t know if Zimmerman needed to mark the far corner but leaving Dumfries alone, unmarked is inexcusable. Then, before that, no one is positioned at the top of the box to stifle cutbacks. Netherlands scored two goals because of that. This is a coaching problem and a player problem.

Herc is so right - perfect analysis of what went down. LVG smoked Berhalter. And that was totally the issue with both goals. He continued to have Dest/Robinson push up and they were happy to soak up pressure & counter. They knew that the CBs were 35, and all due respect, MLS (Zimmerman), and could be beat as there was way too much for Adams to cover. The midfield left them out to dry on both. It's those moments and the Pulisic chance that was saved. Having said all that... this USA team did show that over the last 20 years, they gap has narrowed a bit with the quality of their players and I was happy how brave they played. Hi im from the Netherlands and was wondering how you guys were analyzing this defeat.
Some remarks were spot on. In the Netherlands the media are pretty negative about our own squad and the way they are playing (it should be beautiful, like Johan Cruijff 70's where we won exactly nothing).
In 2010 we had a boring squad with mediocre players like Joris Mathijssen, Andre Ooijer etc. But our coach then (van Marwijk) played a more pragmatic, defensive system to at least win. In short, we managed to come to the final. But the media was not happy with the way of playing, even though we did dominate (without ball). Some even said they would be ashamed if we'd won the final against Spain. Can u imagine that?
In my opinion the best domination is when you dont need the ball to be safe: a rock solid defence with closed lines and pressing on the right moment. Louis van Gaal also transformed from possesion based football too non possesion based football.
That said, kudos for the clear analyze. Hope the USA will become a stronger nation overall for 2026. Dont forget: possesion means nothing in football. Look up Inter Milan 2010 or UEL final between ajax and Man utd (mourinho).
In hindsight it wasnt 50/50. Our media is way to negative about our squad. Also it was a bit expected to get more space vs the way USA played. The dutch squad is full of talent and we managed to place into the final of the Nations League, beating prime France and Germany. And here we are now, with the same players and a pragmatic coach. I just wanted to say its not a shame if you get beaten by this side, maybe a bit of a hard lesson but we've had these in the past (98's, 00's, 08's).
We could just go all the way, who knows.

The 2010 squad was the best squad we ever had at a WC. V Persie, Sneijder and Robben are all 2 tiers above Depay. Van Marwijk was a horrible coach, which is why in 2012 Euro, it was abysmal. People keep parroting each others and are blind themselves. Football is decided mostly by turnovers and set pieces. Those few moments create the few goals we have in football. And those decide the matches. It is true that possession is not important. But the problem with many Dutch squads has always been useless possession. Even Under V Marwijk. Why? Because they put on 2 defensive midfielders. Our media is always way too positive, claiming we are favorites for the WC. It is just that football coaches mostly don't know or don't dare to make the right decisions. They are all afraid of the players getting nervous, chaotic, and then losing. So with the huge pressure, the coach wants to gain control. And they do so by playing more defensively, giving the players all kinds of rules to follow. This is one of the reasons why in 2010 and 2014, Brazil was so bad.
If you want to win in football, you need to be able to outplay the opponent. Many teams have enough quality to easily create scoring opportunities against an organized defense. So goals that do not come from a turnover. The Dutch did it once during the US with the first goal. But they are not allowed to play that way because of LVG.
Under V Basten, the Dutch played their best football. But the players lost their minds vs Portugal in a crazy games with tons of cards. And then vs Russia, a child of one of the players died during childbirth and the players didn't have the focus on the game.
In 2014, LVGs tactical plan was failing basically every game. They needed to go back to 4-3-3 every time to avoid losing. And even vs Spain, they could have been 2-0 behind after 30 minutes. It just helps to have world class players and suddenly, you look like a tactical genius.

Also LVG is one of the best coaches ever, it was a total mismatch in terms of game schemes and planning and executing. Talented players but with a world class manager compared to not as talented but young energetic American players with a manager not near the level of LVG.

Sorry but we lost because we had a bad plan and didn’t adapt after it was clear we were getting schooled. Berhalter only put in two so-so centerbacks against a very good team. He let the fullbacks get forward. Van Gall saw this and realized he could throw everyone forward on the counterattack. Netherlands had 2 world class CBs and 1 very good CB so they could afford to push 6+ players into the counterattack. Look at how many orange shirts are in and around the US box on each of the 3 goals. It was bound to happen that 1 or more Dutch attackers would be unmarked. We also failed to adapt. The three goals all came off essentially the same play.

On one side you have Louis, smart, tactically wise one of the best coaches to ever live, let’s his sides play to their qualities, but always built in certain patterns to keep his sides balanced, his choice of tactics today were simply brilliant.
On the other side you have Greg…riskant tactics, spaces between midfield and backline wide open, weird subs management, weird roster picks, and to much more honestly.

What exactly did LVG bring to this game? Weird sub management and weird roster picks sounds exactly like Van Gaal. The US was attacking because the Dutch were weak. But because they didn't score people are pretending that the Dutch feigned weakness and it was a trick. Which genius coach makes his squad give away scoring opportunities only to trick the opponent into thinking they are better? Crazy talk!

    • @BrianStorm742
      @BrianStorm742 Před rokem

@@Prometheus4096 I can't tell if you're being deliberately obtuse but structuring a team around counterplay is a really common tactic in football. In fact, it's slowly but surely become arguably the most popular tactic in European club football, spearheaded by clubs like Benfica, Atlético de Madrid, PSV, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympique Lyonnais, Borussia Dortmund and practically every Italian team except arguably Juventus and Napoli, and now implemented widely all around the continent. There's multiple different ways to do this. The Italian philosophy is called catenaccio and it's the most surface-level counterplay tactic, literally just sitting back and waiting for an opportunity to strike. But there's also counterplay tactics that actively force your opponent into making mistakes. A well-known German philosophy is called gegenpressing, and is geared towards immediately winning back the ball after losing it, so that you can swiftly catch your opponent in a forward motion. The tactic Van Gaal used against the USA is quite unorthodox, which is why it's so genius. He calls it "provocative pressing", and it's essentially a tactic that's both very defensive AND employs a lot of players high up the pitch to threaten the opposing build-up play, forcing mistakes. Then, upon winning the ball, the attackers or midfielders will immediately have their wing backs to support them in attack, which is what killed the USA off at every single goal they conceded. Counter football wears out your opponent and makes sure you always have enough space when attacking, which makes it a very efficient tactic. At this World Cup alone, we've seen the Netherlands, England, Wales, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Australia, Japan, Croatia, Morocco, Cameroon, Uruguay AND South Korea employ counter play tactics. So idk what you're on about.

Netherlands scored two goals because of that. This is a coaching problem and a player problem. Maybe we need to bring in a new coach, maybe an internationally well respected coach.
