I met Chris this week purely by chance. We chatted for an hour over a drink. I can confirm that the guy is absolutely as nice and thoughtful as he seems on his videos. His passion for the instrument is so inspiring and of course he’s a masterful guitarist. I suspect there is no guitarist out there who has a better touch when it comes to passing notes. Please keep the content coming and I’m so excited to see what is next for this guy
Cheers Killian! Lovely to meet you mate. Hopefully see you in Manchester in September 🙂
@@ChrisBuckGuitar Greatest guitar design? Fender TC-90. A set-neck, thinline double-cutaway Telecaster with P-90's & a stop tail. Prove me wrong...
An ES 335, and a Telecaster. That is all I need for an electric guitar.
That’s what I have and a mesa boogie and katana amplifier
That's all anybody needs. After years of trying to figure out what my guitar preferences are (and owning almost every guitar type there is), I finally came to the conclusion that the Tele and the 335 (or equivalent semi-hollow with humbuckers) are what speak to me the most. Of course, I own other guitar types, but if I had to pick only two, it would be a Tele and a 335.
I’m beginning to see a theme here, since I’m of the exact same mindset. 🤘🏾
@Luthiart ^ tongue firmly in cheek ^
Truly, play whatever the hell you feel like
just don't assume that you know what anyone else _should themselves be playing_ without getting an eyeful/earful backatya ! ☮
0:32 holy smokes!
This Buck kid should start playing the guitar for a living. He's got a future with the instrument...
:)
hey, do you know the name of this song?
It's a Cardinal Black song. Dunno which one
@@mattgilbert7347 i guess they don't release yet
He’s banking with this channel 💵 👍

Hey Chris, I grew up in Germany but I moved to the US in 1979 when I was 22. English is my second language. So maybe that is why I am so aware of the fact that you not only have an impressive command over your guitar, but also the way you express yourself, using the English language, is equally astounding. There is something calming, lyrical and beautiful about the way you speak. You would be hard pressed to find anyone here in the US who could keep up with you. I am mainly a bass player but I love playing the guitar as well andI truly enjoy your videos.
True and seems like a dude you could talk for hours with over a few beers
I was born and raised in the US and I'm listening to this video simply because I like the way Chris Buck speaks. My wife and I were talking about how much we enjoy British English (a blackbeltbarrister video had just ended). So I pulled up a Chris Buck video for an encore. David Bennett Piano is sure to be next. :)
Setting aside the legends for the moment, it's my feeling that you are one of the best guitar players in the world.
100%👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
He is a Modern Day Jeff Beck. Absolutely incredible
I can't think of any other current players in this genre, if that's the right word, that even come close to his expressiveness. Maybe Eric Gales. But Chris is definitely a phenom.
Just realized I'm not subscribed. I've been watching your vids for years! Shame on me. Subscribe people, this mans a master of his craft.
526 to 719 is some of the most tasteful tuneful playing i have heard. on level with all the masters
Ditto.
You can thank Hank Garland for the design and especially the playability of the 335. He’s the guy who worked with McCarty to design the 335 and also work the bugs out of the original design. Hank ended up with the prototype.
Chris, it has been a long time since a guitarist has made my face pucker, eyes squint, and body contort all while you feel tears welling up, and the only release is that next cathartic way you Chris choose to phrase that next run. Man thank you so much. Don’t stop! Come back to the states please and thank you!
Different guitars I know, but I have always preferred 335s to LPs. I consider them to be more versatile and richer sounding. I love teles for their simplicity, but I think the 335 is in many ways the pinnacle of electric guitar design
Every time I watch this dude play, I’m put in a trance, wondering why in 30 years of playing have I not come close to that level of talent.
I understand your pain!
An over driven humbucker in a hollow body seems to create otherworldly overtones that no other combination can match. Conjuring musical feedback from a 335 is pure magic.
Alex Lifeson's a big fan who was, when I was growing up, my hero. He's just sold his 355 at auction (£380,000). His first main guitar was a sunburst '68 335 which was damaged at a gig. I think he still has it. I once got to play a chap's early 70's 345 through a Roland space echo. La Villa Strangiato was first, of course!
I've owned a 1980 Gibson ES 347 for roughly 23 years. I love this guitar.
I have other toys too.
Yes i had one. An unbelievable guitar. Match it up with a Messa Boogie amp with SRO speaker it was great!!
Clapton always at his best with a 335 in his hands!
Superb playing as ever - brilliant outro (and you were the best band at Merthyr Rising by a country mile!!)
If you hadn’t seen that Chris Buck was the one soloing at 9:41 you would be forgiven in thinking it’s Larry Carlton on a Steely Dan tune. Nice
No question at all. I remember the first time I plugged one of these "jazz boxes" in to an old super bass head with greenbacks.
Goodness me. I had a religious experience. Back then you could buy Epiphone dots for
i have an epi dot. my main guitar.
Rockin' a Korean made '04 Epi Dot Deluxe w/ SD Pearly Gates and a Bigsby. It's a straight KILLER.. Love it! ✊
This is one guitar where an Epi gets you in the EXACT space as a top tier Gibson CS 335. Upgrade the pick ups and never look back. I still just favor single coils and strats télés and jazz masters to my ear let you channel a wider range of tone. Still my 59 Epi with Throwbacks begs to play those Steely Dan lick ( thank you Larry Carlton, Danny Dias, Skunk Baxter..). In the end it’s the imagination and execution of the guitarist and man these videos are transcendant!
Hi Chris great as always, but I feel mention should have been made of the great Bill Nelson of Be Bop Deluxe, he was a ES 345 player who brought the guitar to rock prominence, the guitar sound he got on "Crying to the Sky" was an early inspiration for me, but from what I have read it was for Prince as well. A gift from his dad in the mid sixties, It was pretty much the only guitar he played back then.
Totally agree , well said.
You can't spell Friday without tagging on the word Fretworks anymore! The easiest 'Like' of the week!
I was hypnotised by Marty McFly when I saw Back to the Future as a little kid, and right then and there decided i wanted to play electric guitar. Years later, without connecting the dots, I gravitated towards a 335, bought one and didn't look back for 10 years. Added a Tele and I don't think I'll ever want anything more than those two
Happy Friday
Always plays some of the tastiest licks on the web, never disappoints😀
That guitar solo at 5:26 was sublime!
Great vid. And yes, to me the 335 is the best guitar ever. Great tone, versatile, extremely comfortable to play, not too heavy, gorgeous looks. A 355 with Bigsby is still on my wishlist 😀.
I am a recent 335 convert. I am not even a real guitar player, my main instrument is bass guitar. Found a used epiphone es-335 pro 2019 at a shop for a really good price. Bought it took it home and plugged in…….the neck pickup…….god tone. I never even ever wanted a semi hollow…..ever. I thought they were kinda dorky looking to be honest. Made a convert here. Love that guitar
@5:27 that's one of the best demos I've ever seen of having a flexible approach to right hand technique, using and not using the plectrum. Top Stuff. and yes I'm a 335 fan,
I got a used '68 cherry 335 with Bigsby off the net around 20 years ago. I wanted that particular model because one of my guitar heros, Justin Hayward, played one. Best very scarce $1999 I ever spent! Only downside is I have to keep it chained to a pitbull to keep dear friends from walking off with it! Love your pronunciation of your name: Chris Buh-Uk!
fantastic track .. ur playing is something mesmerizing !!
That tone at 5:30 or so had my jaw drop
Amazing playing - and feel!
Great video and playing - time to rethink the 335 . . . never really considered one back in the day. Got my LP Custom in 1974 and just stayed with it, adding a Strat 10 years later. Thanks for the music!
I have a Es-335 type guitar that went a bit unloved for a while and I recently started gigging it in place of my Strat and yes, I find it so versatile. Especially as mine has coil taps.
same. I had one years ago, didnt really appreciate it, and then saw it used properly by some good players. I had to get a new, and Im so glad I did!
The coil taps would make it super versatile for sure, my 335 type has to be my favorite guitar for gigging
@@Deliquescentinsight yeah, with different pickup selector positions and coil tap variations there are actually 8 possible sounds, before you even think about adjusting the tone controls.
Top stuff Buckmaster. A profound assessment.
What an amazing sound. Those jams were a great way to round my Friday off. The last one was super hot like the weather today
I absolutely love your playing, so vivid and creative. A pleasure to watch!
The black finale stunning !
Hey Brother, your channel is great. I also love the fact that you added a live show clip. There are many guitar demo's out there but few actually give an example of how the guitar sounds in a real, live setting. Thank you so much. much love from Jake in Detroit.
Superb playing and great video Chris!! I mainly play strats, but after that, my favourite and most played of my guitars is my 339, love it!
That second solo on the red 335 was to my ears way better than the intro part. Much more melodic which is what I prefer personally. It’s not how many notes you play but which notes you play. This is not a criticism of your playing which is always amazing, just my personal preference. I have a 335 (1980), LP (1979) and SG (1972) and love the sound of the 335 but I don’t really get on with it for reasons I can’t figure out. Weight is certainly one factor but not really the reason. I bought it second hand really cheaply and am loath to part with it. Oh well I guess my kids will inherit it. Love the channel - please keep them coming.
Love your talks 👍. Great fella . Full of information, always interesting. Loved seeing you in lin Liverpool with Buck&Evans. … Top lad 🎸❤️👍
I am continually appreciative that you share with us your superpowers of being a superb musician and historian!👏👏👏
It's the greatest when you're playing it bro, quality 😂
Supurb review. And melodic playing!
Started HS south of Nashville 1968-70. Lot of live country music on local TV. Number of players used 335's, as much as Tele's. Got great country tones out of 335's.
Your videos have been suggested for a while now. But I finally clicked and I’m glad I did. Great playing, and great video. Subbed.
The outro solo is one of your best ever that was incredible 💯
I have a 335 studio. And I inevitably keep going back to it again and again! I plays and sounds incredible!
That live clip just blew my mind.
Okay, ,, back to the rest of the film. .
The song in the middle reminded of Doves.... but with shredding. Great stuff ✌️
Booked my Tickets, See you at the Adelphi In Hull ! Can't wait
Incredible playing!! And nice watch :)
my friend if you even play a rubber band stick you will sound like the greatest guitarist in the world .its in the fingers.👍👍👍👍👍
I do agree with your statement for the most part which you hear all the time , but if the “tone is in the fingers’ concept is 100 percent accurate , then why do all these other great players like Bonamassa, etc collect and play the finest vintage guitars and amps to achieve their “tone”?
Why don’t they just play the crappiest guitars from upper Mongolia?
@@SlavicSon for the same reason that a good big guy always beats a good little guy. That and they can afford it and probably enjoy it like the less talented of us
@@SlavicSon ask Clapton
@@juancarlosgonzalezconde6958 Ask him what? Why he plays expensive vintage guitars to get his tone which are auctioned for millions of dollars and who currently has dozens of them up for sale at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville? In addition to the newer custom shop fender and Martin pieces that cost thousand in their own right?
@@SlavicSon whatever
your playing is hypnotic! 😍🔥
I just recently acquired an Eastman T59/V and it amazing!!!!! Once you pick it up you don't want to sit it down..
I was considering purchasing a semi hollow. Now Im convinced.
Chris, you have a gift. 🙏
Chris
Great job. Have a 345 and it's a great all-around axe. Love the reference to the log haven't seen anyone say that before.
Thanks
BobT
Love it Chris !!!!
That outro though. Amazing player.
Great vid, and I like your points on the Ed 335 or similar. Iconic!
Bad ass solo Bro…really felt that energy you put into it
I have agree with the versatility of the ES335. I had one in 1969 and kick myself to this day that I sold it.
whoa that was awesome......felt that one.
Always loved the look and sound of the ES. Also that was among my favorite playing of yours. Especially loved the second playing part from 5:30 on.
I have an epiphone 335 pro I picked up a few years ago. Simply an amazing machine.
Epic solo !!
So I packed up my gear for the weekend last night, including the 5 guitars I’m taking to the gigs this weekend. I decided to give my 335 a weekend off (which it NEVER gets!), and to take a Gretsch instead…and then this video! Now I’ve gotta rethink my decision! I had this same problem with your Melody Maker video and my ‘63 Melody Maker! Your playing is fantastic, and very persuasive! So maybe it’ll be the Gretsch and the 335 (and Strat, and 2 Pauls…) and I’ll give the Firebird the weekend off….decisions decisions! Great video, great playing as always! Cheers ✌🏼
The hell with the guitars...that's some damn fine playing.
"dabbled in thoracic surgery instead"! Good heavens! What a great line! I might have to borrow that sometime. As always, another wonderful video Chris!
Hi Chris, I loved the jam at the 5:27 mark, the rhythm and flow that you have when you play is out of this world, I’d love to hear your opinion on budget models such as epiphones inspired by Gibson range and also the Manson meta series guitars, I’m looking forward to next weeks Friday fretworks already 🤘🏻
Found you last weekend. See you on the tour - Rising was a great set
Chris Buck might be my favorite modern guitarist.
Great video as usual!
and as usual: awesome playing!
My personal favourite guitars are my Epiphone Casino and my Squire Strat. They feel excellent by my taste and both work for everything I want to make. I mean I've made stuff from Stoner Metal to Black Metal to Beatlesesque stuff, and pretty much everything I've made on those 2 guitars. I honestly have no real complaints about either of them.
Brilliant playing Mr. Buck! Not that I play guitar but I am an avid guitar listening connoisseur and I do love a good 335.
I know you get a ton of comments from people who complement you’re playing. This is another one. I really enjoy listening to you play, it was a really interesting video as well!
Definitely a fantastic guitar, as is the 355, because of the extended headstock. Super versatile guitar design and sound. Your proficiency and soul come through regardless of the axe!
Can’t agree more! The es-3x5 range of guitars is the GOAT. Both in sound and looks.
Yeah what a player👍 just got a 2014 Memphis ES-335. I’ve got lots of nice electrics but I found this actually blows them away, even my CS 59 LP 2022. It had the pick ups changed out to Sheptone Blue Sky PAFs. Had done, wound, unpotted. They sound sooo much better than the originals. Nice wider neck it’s like it was made for my hand.
Excellent as always Chris. My beloved 335 (50th Anniversary Custom Shop) has a special place for me. The now sadly deceased Jeff Pumfrett of World Guitars in Gloucestershire sold it to me after a long conversation with him. It had always been one of my bucket list guitars and I finally found one I’d fallen in love with. A collector had been in to see it and was interested but Jeff admitted he’d prefer to let me have it because he knew how I felt and it wouldn’t just be sat in its case but played and loved. So it became mine. He was a real gent and much missed I’m sure.
That solo starting at 9:44 is amazing! So smooth and in the pocket and I honestly cannot figure out how he developed his fingerstyle technique. Buck is one of my favorite players on CZcams.
I got an epiphone es 335 2 months ago as my first own guitar and its a beauty, play and look gorgeous
I love my EJ thinline Strat. I've been using it live for 3 years and it's still the best sounding guitar I've played. I like the uniqueness of it too - it's definitely an eye catcher
Amazing and very enjoyable playing Chris. I picked up the scaled down ES-339 simply because it was soooo comfortable. Great video!
me too, i love my 339, they get a lot of criticism it seems, undeserved i think. i'm thin so i look like a mic stand holding a guitar, smaller is better.
Thanks chris you are a truly a great guitarist
Thanks very much Chris you made it sound glorious, i don't know if there is a best guitar you can make a case for them all based on what you think is important. But for argument sake if it's the Tele it's incredible to think that no one has done better than those 50's logs 😊
A brilliant argument Chris! It certainly is iconic.
Damn that got me :) Thanks Chris for the marker :)
Hi Chris,
I own a Framus Atlantic 6, which is quite similar to a 335. It was my first guitar and I only learned that it is a Swiss knife, when I bought other guitars, Stratocaster like and SG like. My Framus does not perfectly match to them, but it is VERY close. So this is still my best choice if I want to cover different songs and bands, although it looks a bit worn and torn.
You are a great guitar player!
I fell in love with the Gibson es 335
after hearing the song Blue guitar by the moody blues , way way back ,
Shows my age , but it’s great example of a great 335 sound .
Excellent video and super playing chris
I have a 335, a les Paul, and a tele and the 335 is the one I grab most often. I love the tele twang, but the Gibson scale length is easier to play in my view, and compared with the Les Paul, it's roughly the same weight and a very similar tone, but again easier to play because the fretboard is so accessible right the way up the neck. So it's become my default choice. Quality of Gibson finish not as good as my PRS or my Ibanez JSM, but it has mojo and that great tone.
One of my favorite guitar players I grow up with and seen in concert in 73, played a Gibson ES335 and that was the great Peter Banks. Peter of Yes, then later Flash and Alex Lifeson of Rush were the only ones that knew how to use a lot of effects tastefully in my opinion.
335's are groovy (yes, I'm old) and I've owned three. I now play an Eastman T-185-all solid woods, an ebony board and 25'' scale. Yes, that .25" makes a difference. Also, the center block is big enough to only support the bridge, so it's lighter.
Literally laughed out loud when you compared working on a 335 to thoracic surgery. When I swapped the pickups and loom on my old Epi 335, I actually got hold of some surgical equipment to help and it was STILL a nightmare!!
Sounds incredible, Chris. I ordered a demo model from Sweetwater yesterday (Vintage Burst) in fulfillment of a lifetime dream. A nice $800 off of the list price because it's a demo.
I love semi ollow body guitars more then anything else. My first semi hollow that I bought was the Epiphone Riviera p93 and believe it or not it's still one of my most versatile guitars. One of these days I'll get a 335. Great video buddy.
Have to agree that I love a great 335 or 335 style. My latest venture and first purchase of the type was Carlton's new signature model from Sire and I have to say, the tone and feel is quite astounding. Cheers!
I've put my Aria Pro Il TA30 Made in Korea up for sale and have taken it down so many times. After watching this video, I think I will keep it and change the pick ups in the future. It has burstbuckers in there at the moment. Your playing sounds amazing.
