My problem is I’ve been trying to pick up a cheap p90 revstar for ages but every time the avg price down Chris plays one and they go back ok again!

You’ve never sounded like Hendrix or SRV or Mayer even when playing a Strat but I get what you’re saying. It is easy to fall into doublestops and slides and big bends when you’re playing a Strat. Only a few actually find a recognizable voice on guitar. You are one of them. Thanks for the inspiration
@Anne O'Nymous I'm glad you got it all figured out. The truth is there's not much originality left in the Guitar World. Nowadays you're either a good player a bad player or a mediocre player. Nothing more nothing less. No one's going to reinvent the wheel anymore it's all been done. The greatest players in the world have already come and gone. And as far as this video goes I've identified at least 20 licks that aren't original.
@@BITESIZEJONES haha what?! There is so much more for people to discover in the guitar. It’s like Segovia use to talk about how the guitar contains all of the elements of an orchestra within it, you just have to draw it out. Yes there has been a lot of ground covered in guitars history but most of it has been fairly recent. Now we have more tools than ever both ideologically and literally.
It’s not about reinventing the wheel it’s about getting in the car and going somewhere interesting whilst taking an interesting route. We live in a time of astounding musical freedom and potential.

Nicely put! I love that we can grown and change in our playing. I'm in my late 60s with an advancing neurological condition that affects my hand coordination (along with walking difficulties etc). I've had to adapt playing style to meet the challenge and it's been really rewarding and fun to get new tools and learn different techniques. The joy of little accomplishments outweighs the disappointments. Guitar forever!

Rejoining with Cardinal Black was sort of a fresh start so using a different guitar as well makes a lot of sense. It’s nIce to see some love for Yamaha guitars as well since they’re a bit underrepresented.
That's a shame too because Yamaha make seriously good Instruments.

This is one of the reasons why I own many different guitars, from strats, telys, Les Paul's, acoustics, Etc. Each one not only sounds different, but inspires me to play differently, giving me a fresh perspective over the last six strings that I've been playing, and expands my pallet of musical genres and playing styles.
I’m becoming a bit if a Chris Buck fan boy, at 43, I’ve got plectrums older than he is!😄 His tone and touch is another level, I can’t watch a Friday Fretworks without grabbing a guitar to (try and) steal a riff or two!

I think your decision to pick up the Revstar is pure genius. A well thought out choice. However, when you play I don’t even pay attention to what type of guitar it is. You always sound like Chris Buck regardless of the guitar.

Dunno how many vids i've watched over the years (too many to count) but you have the ability to cut through the noise and express your own voice, which is clear, unique and, well, beautiful.
That strat intro was so sweet and hypnotic. In contrast your bit with the band was a bit harsher and sharper. To bad there can't be the sweeter sound in a mix. But, as always your playing is exceptional and communicative. Understand the journey and the attention that other guitars get as you discover new nuances. You'll get back to the strat again. Just now now 🙃

What I love about your playing is how you make the guitar sound like a voice. Your voice! Lots of my favorite players do this. Jimi, Stevie, John, Derrick. And they each have their own distinct way of giving the guitar their voice. Thanks for adding your voice to a beautiful collection!! 🙌
I don‘t think that there are many guitarists on the planet who need to be *less* afraid of being mistaken for a clone of someone than you! The way you pick and the articulation phrasing and dynamics are all just so unique. You should play any guitar you Ike to play - just as all the other guitarists did that you mentioned.
Personally felt the Strat sounded better and never once felt it was an imitation of anything else. As a recently-turned-40-year-old dude who has played since I was 13, it’s amazing to see this guy play in his own style, no matter what the guitar. The highest compliment, in my mind, is this guy is completely his own thing and damn near impossible to replicate. So awesome to see these young guys (Billy Strings is another) pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the instrument, strat or not. Just inspiring to watch!

It's funny, I have been playing since 1965. I don't think anyone would want to hear my wacky renderings, but I would know it was me in an instant. (bad fingering and all). We play to play and enjoy that part of our lives. It never seems to surprise me how creative one can be with a device I have worn the frets flat on.

As a guitar maker this makes me SO happy to hear! I totally understand where you're coming from and it's something that I've tried to convey through the guitars that I make.
Nothing against Strats, the people that play them, or those who make countless copies of them but without trying new things the musicians, music, and even the guitars themselves never evolve or improve.

I follow a lot of rock and blues artists, being into that for over 50 years and I am sad to say I have not heard much if anything of Chris Buck. Well because of that video you spoke of coming across my CZcams algorithm I have now. Liked and subscribed, I am happy to have found your channel.
Honestly I think it's a great decision. You are one of the greatest in the modern generation. It is even more refreshing to hear your brilliantly unique style in a not so common tone. Plus it will inspire people to play different guitars. I'm totally with you on this.

I've just discovered Chris Buck, late to one hell of a party. Tbh doesn't matter what guitar you're playing, but when you make Danish Pete look average, then you know you're onto something!
@dannyplaysguitar not at all, Danish is utterly brilliant. Just I think Chris is even better in this clip, on another level fir me. His phrasing, timing, melody is just incredible. He is a mix of Derek Trucks meets BB King.

I own a couple of Strats, my favorite one happens to be a hardtail. I also have 2 Les Paul’s, one with p90s and the other is a 57 reissue Custom 2 pickup. My playing has evolved over time and I’m more into jazz now, and my primary guitar is my PRS Hollowbody II. I’m fortunate enough to have options, and be able to pick the right tool for the job. Great video Chris, and I feel sorry for Greta Van Fleet, they were put in a box early on that they may not be able to get out of.

Chris, I totally agree with your point. I was a "Strat" man for 13+ years and when I went to a Les Paul my world just opened up to many different styles. It helped me mature my playing style.
You've got to follow what's calling to you, of course, but for whatever it's worth, I thought you had an **utterly** unique tone, feel, and approach on the Strat. That's actually what attracted me to your playing: I don't even especially like Strats, but you pulled sounds out of that guitar that I've never heard from a Stratocaster and didn't know they could produce. Everything else is just noise, of course, when the Angel knocks on your front door and shows you exactly where to go - but I, for one, feel that you're among the very top echelon of players who can lead the Strat *out* of its typecast blind alleys and get it singing in a striking new way.

I have to say that having followed you for a few years now I never thought your playing reminded me of anyone on a strat or any other guitar. You are in the enviable position of sounding like you, even if you can hear your influences in your strat playing, most people don't.

Ironically, that outro part was the coolest piece I've heard Chris play - and it was played on a strat... Perhaps because it was rougher, more hard rock oriented than most of his other work. Whatever it was, I think it sounded amazing. And frankly, the last thought coming to my mind would be, "I wish this was played on smth other than a strat".
I've never thought of you as just a strat player Chris. Your style is unlike any other guitarist I've ever seen so I don't feel the strat has held you back!

What's so interesting, Chris, is that the development of the Buck is clear even without the clips of you playing. The confidence and polish with which you now articulate your views to camera is so cohesive and persuasive and, to use an old-fashioned word, wise.
As for the sometimes discomforting fact of having videos exisiting in perpetuity, all I can say that is that it's been a real joy to me to bear witness to part of development of a fantastic and original musician .
Finally, I'm sure that I will feel a shiver or two when you do get that Highway One back in front of the camera. Nostalgia? I dunno!

great episode, chris! more than one subject touched on, here, subjects near and dear to my heart and in my real life. kudos to you! you rock, and you rock.
I ordered my new 1969 LH Strat in May and finally got it in Oct. ( Went to Woodstock that Summer) It was my one and only and I gigged with it for several years. Starting as a surf music player in the early 60's and being a huge fan of Jimi, it was the only choice for me. Not to mention that I couldn't afford a Gibson LP and probably couldn't even get a left hand model at that time.
I've loved that guitar with all my heart and always felt that I should be able to play it all on my one guitar. Thank the gods I found Epi. LP's and others to see what I'd been missing.
Now, at 70, I only play a few Hendrick's songs (but many from Jeff Beck) and don't want to be affiliated with SRV or John Mayer.
My personal image and style is better represented by a 335, LP, or a Jazzmaster. Things change!! Great video! Thanks

Like others here, I love your playing. What I have noticed is that you do indeed have your own sound. You not only mastered the legacy idioms, but I have noticed you are in fact creating your own... 'licks' that I find myself messing with at times unconsciously... you're in my head sometimes, and it's cool :)

The intro is from your fuzz demo a while back. Probably my favorite intro you’ve done so far.
I don’t think it would matter what Chris plays….he would make a table tennis bat sound great….
Brilliant comments as always & totally spot on. Your sound is identifiable from style, feel and technique. I look at a pioneer like Adrian Belew, started on that battered Strat, but really found his own voice on his custom Parker Fly. It’s exciting to hear you break out the Yamaha and make a new path - yours.

Really resonates. I’m nowhere near your league but the strat was my first, my primary for 20 years, and the instrument most of my heroes play. It’s been good to “shop around” in the past few years and a source of a lot of change/musical growth. Thanks for speaking so eloquently about it.

Glad to see you use the Grolsch bottle seal hack on your strap buttons too like us mere mortals. You’d sound like you on a plank of would with strings nailed to it. Hey Chris, i just watched your solo from the youtube video entitled "Possibly the most beautiful guitar solo I've ever heard". Is there any chance you could do a tutorial to help a flailing guitarist pick up a few of the great licks and phrasing you laid down in that solo? Totally mesmerizing. I've been a big fan of yours ever since i first heard you a few months ago! Thanks for all your great guitar playing and your sharing nature to help others learn guitar!!
I understand exactly what you are saying but…. No one sounds like you. And you only sound like you. I can say that I try and sound like you though 😉. You truly are a breath of fresh air in the guitar world. John Mayer, Andy Timmons, and Chris Buck are at the top of my list.
I agree with another comment also that if I play a Yamaha bow that im trying to sound like Chris Buck.
I get what you say but then that applies to us mere mortals who are forever five steps behind our heroes. My humble opinion is that you're such a talent that you have carved your own niche on the Strat as on Write Another Day where they are Chris Buck recognisable solos not Strat solos.
But whatever enthuses you and moves your playing forward is good no matter what.

I can’t see Fender’s little dot inlays very well on a dark stage, and I do need to peek at the neck when I play. I prefer big fat Gibson fret markers, Jackson shark fins etc….
