SteelSeries Rival 700 Review (Great FPS mouse... almost)

  • 3360 optical sensor, great! Smaller design of the Rival 300, awesome! Good build quality, yay! 137g... damn!
Just a theory, but maybe SteelSeries is not targeting competitive players with this... they want the casual market which go for things like "zomg 16000 CPI!!!!!!!". Time will tell.
I'm curious to know if there's anyone out there that likes this kind of weight. 125g is usually the cut off. So let me know in the comments if you are fine with 137g!

You are literally the best product reviewer on the entire internet. It is because you don't just read out the tests of the companies that make them. You my man, you really test things u don't just take things for what is said. You put your experience, knowledge and personal preference to it. Not like youtubers that say: "the specs are blablabla and its a good product"
Keep up the good work man!

I've been using the rival 700 for about a week, I mainly play cs:go. The mouse feels great and tracks great. The OLED display is definitely gimmicky but the vibration motor is quite useful in game in many situations (for example: telling you that the round has started, or that you are low on ammo when you don't realise). The weight was a challenge at start coming from a razer deathadder 2013 but I got used to the weight and it doesn't bother me now. 9/10 would buy again..

    • @Antares-dw9iv
      @Antares-dw9iv Před 6 lety

I find the 700 more comfortable and it seems to have better clicks and a better scroll wheel. However the 600 is lighter and has a slightly more comfortable although possibly less durable surface coating. Unless the weight bothers you I'd personally go with the 700. But the shape is obviously subjective. If you have the chance I'd go to a store and take both mice into your hand and make my decision based on that. You're not gonna go wrong with either.
Although if price is an issue I'd take the 310 over both. Basically the same without all the gimmicks and maybe very slightly worse buttons and build quality but not to a point where it should matter.

First thing I thought when I saw this was "GREAT! A smaller Rival 300 with a 3360", and then it dawned on me...the display. It actually disappointed me as so many people are buying mice for their aesthetics, rather than functionality. Still might pick one up (even though it's pricey) and add it to my collection. Keen to try something with a 3360 that isn't a G303 or G502, as well as another base benchmark to compare the Scream One to. Putting out some great vids as always, keep up the awesome work!

I got this today. And as a 6"3 guy coming from a Rival 300.. The weight and Size where still noticeable. I didn't expect it to be AS heavy as it is. Still, in saying that, by no way is it unusable. Had a bit of sucess so far in Overwatch/CSGO. Will wait a while before deciding if it works.
Anyway as someone similar to yourself with alot of mice, i have 12, 13 now with this Rival 700.. 5 of which are Steelseries. Really like the clicks, the scroll wheel to me could do with being a bit higher, the new side button near the screen is mooshy, not a fan. I have the 2 extra cases and the Laser Sensor coming this week from US. Will comment back or perhaps tweet you to see how i find the Laser and the new Shells.
Overall i think the build quality is really good. The weight i am actually finding nice in some instances. Sounds stupid, but flying through documents/web browsing i feel like i am alot more accurate max/minimizing windows, opening files and so on. Gaming i am finding, CS:GO mostly, very consistant aiming so far with the 4-5 hours ive played. I play 2.5 sens @ 400cpi and i am finding i am being alot more controlled, maybe due to the weight, and am actually aiming alot more for the head, perhaps losing some of the 'flick' or quick turn ability im not sure.
I also really like the mouse, as a taller guy, and a builder of 10 years, i find the weight isn't as bad as i thought, but is noticeable and probably a transition period. After using it for 5 hours i got my Zowie EC1-A out and honestly the Zowie felt like i was holding a piece of paper. Still. I'm gonna stick with the 700 for a while. The screen is neat and all, have already turned it off though.
Love the video as always man! Best in depth mouse reviews on youtube, its nice to see a review that isn't like "OMG RGB LIGHTING LOOK HOW BRIGHT IT IS THIS MOUSE IS THE BEST CHROMA WOO" etc. Only negative i had was dismissing the features of the mouse when it literally came out a couple weeks ago. Already has a few games in Gamesense. So others will follow shortly.. So just hope people don't watch and think there wont ever be support. Im sure Steelseries will make gamesense comp for Overwatch and other new games soon.. I also think its a bit gimmicky anyway, and things like a health bar or headshot counter on your mouse are basically useless. But i guess its a feature.

Getting ready to buy my 1st gaming mouse. Stuck between this and new Deathadder Elite.
Apparently mouse weight is a huge factor to people. When he mentioned the weight of this mouse being 137g and everyone in the comments was like "holy crap that's alot", I started to get really concerned.
So I went and looked up the weight of my current Logitech M705 mouse. It's freakin' 0.55lb!! (~250g!!). And that's without the two AA batteries it requires since it's wireless only. If you guys think the Rival 700 is a brick, then my mouse must be an anchor lol.
I've been using this guy for over 2 years (got it aug 2014) and I'm only upgrading now because it's doing the double/triple click thing. I got so concerned about this 137g mouse over nothing. Yea I'm definitely picking this up now.

    Worth noting:
    1) The tactile alerts are not useless - Not long after this review SS3 software was updated to allow you to set a tactile alert on a variable delay from ANY input in any application. So you're not limited to games supported by GameSense (next to none).
    2) The OLED isn't a gimmick either if you use to identify what profile you're using. I switch profiles while playing Overwatch, and I only need to glance at the OLED to ensure I've got the right one set for the hero I'm playing. Any game where you make a change that will adjust cooldowns and the OLED becomes useful.
    3) For those who do prefer heavy mice, can confirm this felt fantastic.

I haven't used this mouse specifically, but knowing the switches I would assume that jitter clicking would be quite easy for claw grips and hybrid claw grips. However, the weight might really slow you down in a MOBA, unless you have exceptional grip strength. In my experience, the heavier the mouse the harder it is to jitter while moving around.

I use the Corsair M95, which is 181 grams and love it. Of course I've been using it for years so my muscle memory is tuned to use it properly, but I still prefer heavier mice. I like a good solid base that I can't accidentally move and requires purposeful movements. Also, I have the Rival 700 has a review sample and I agree that the OLED is just a gimmick, but I don't agree about the haptic feedback. I see haptic feedback as the natural progression of mice and I hope to see it in every mouse some day. The game selection is small, yes, but it is a good starting point as a lot of people play those games and they are good for showing off what it can do. Haptic feedback needs to start somewhere, so this is a good start in my opinion. I would love to see the hatpic feedback provided by the HTC Vive controllers implemented into mice.

I have this mouse, i have used it for about 6 months now if im correct.
About the weight: 137 grams is heavy for a mouse indeed, but i grew to ignore it the more i played. I made a lot less flickshots with this 6 months ago than now, its just the thing that you get used to the weight.
My oled screen broke and its now just weight. gg.

I really wish they would either remake the Sensei with the 3310/3360 or a smaller Sensei. The Rival 100 was so close to being great.

Smaller, lighter rival 300 with 3360 would be a must buy. But the weight is ridiculous and a total deal breaker when what made me change from the 300 was the heavy weight and stiff cable.
Lets hope steelseries listens but there is still no sensei with a proper sensor. So lets not get our hopes up.

Heh, my concerns were the opposite - Was worried it'd be too light. Been using mice for FPS since pre-Quake, and find heavier mice more accurate for me.
Biggest downer for me is that the tactile alerts feature is entirely depending on SteelSeries providing support, and right now it's just for 3 games, none of which I'm interested in playing. There's going to need to be a common API that multiple manufacturers and developers use for this, or the feature won't gain any traction.

Got the mouse a week ago. Actually, i can agree that it is a bit overweight but i dont mind it, really. It is great for cs:go and it is precise. Since it has a bit more weight, it is easier to aim with it (atleast in my case) and vibration could be really usefull. For example, every time i headshot someone, it will vibrate and also it is vibrating when the round starts, in case you are out of game and need to switch over windows. Great mouse overall, a bit overpriced tho, but it is ok since it got most high end things.

Trying out a rival 700 and a roccat Kone Aimo at the moment. Torn between which to keep. Love the Rival’s clean looks and modular ability but I also like the aimo’s lighting and it’s a little wider at the front.. Think I might end up keeping the rival as I’m not convinced with the recessed light strips on the Aimo, I can see them filling with dust, sweat and other fluff. Then the side buttons and the cpi buttons feel like bargain basement switches. Think I’ve answered the question I was going to ask 🤡

I would really like if all mice had a left-handed version. For me, being a left-hander, it's really hard to pick the right mouse, sure, there are ambidextrous mice out there, but they have a few drawbacks. Currently I have a Asus ROG Sica, which didn't disappoint me in FPS, considering the fact that it's a pretty cheap mouse.
I just hope that (more) left-handed edition mice will appear, altough I don't see it happening anytime soon, unfortunately.

Out of curiosity, can you do a history of mice and their impact on Quake? I'm sure newer guys like myself would be interested in how the scene reacted from going from keyboard to ball mice and then being shocked with the Micosoft wmo.

I can't speak for everyone, but from memory ... in the early days, our ball mice seemed better. We reluctantly moved to the opticals later when they started to show some promise. Some of it may have been us trying to get used to the new tech, but it wasn't some "WOW THIS IS INCREDIBLE" moment. It was "this is new tech, still has bugs and issues, but it's the future for sure".

    • @brainnim9935

+Rocket Jump Ninja Interesting to think that ball mice had a time when they were preferred to laser/optical mice. I've only ever used ball mice when I was a small child and it felt pretty bad in comparison.

Hey dude, can I make a request? I've seen almost all your videos just for the sheer quality of your reviews. I've commented this before, but you make literally the best and less obnoxious mice review videos I've ever seen.
So, I have really large hands, they're a bit out of proportion to the rest of my size (I'm 6"1'). I also have a very hard time with grips - the only grip that doesn't make my entire arm sore is the palm grip.
Knowing that, I bought the Naos 7000 and we've had most fun throughout the 2 years we've been together. But it all ended when the scroll click stopped working. I really love that mouse and I'm thinking of buying a new one, but I fear the same will happen to the new one.
Would you make video showing and comparing mice that would suit best large handed people that palm grip? Maybe showing off their ergonomics and stuff. That would be the best ever.
    Best regards from Brazil.

I am 6ft 8 and have 23cm hands. after searching for a big mouse to fit my massive hand size I came across this mouse at my local store and have not loocked back since. amazing for aim in fps shooters due to the weight keeping your aim nice and smooth. all in all fantastic mouse, with the mouse back plates however the texture is awful. I recommend getting their backplate bundle.

what is the orange thing on thumb rest for? and what is the weight of the rival 300. I can't decide which of the 2 mice to get. I kinda like the idea of the vibrations just to confirm getting the kill in csgo, but I don't want a heavy mouse either.

Hey Rocket Jump Ninja. Just to confirm, got this mouse the other day for Christmas. Liking it a lot so far , is it actually fine that the right mouse button looks very very slightly lower than the left one and also feels not much but a tiny bit heavier. Not a huge problem, but like you said 'it's fairly common' So its nothing to worry about really right? Great review as well btw :)

    2 things.
    1) Great channel! Would love you reviewing a generic, Genius, or Logitech $5 mouse :D
    2) Guys on the comments section: without too much research I bought a Cougar 450m... found it way too large, uncomfortable, I keep pressing the right sidebuttons, the buttons are way too hard to press (too much pressure needed) and it's too picky on which surfaces it works. I tried 3 different mousepads and it works better on my bare desktop :|.
Any ideas on what mouse to look for? Smaller, easier to click, light, not weirdly shaped?
    Thanks!
