Used to love getting the NME, it was required reading back in the late ‘70’s particularly. ❤

Absolutely, it was my weekly must-read from about '77 onwards.

I had a complete set of NME (and MM and Sounds) from 1976 to late 1979. Sold them all for a pittance in the 90's. I so miss them. They made for great reading. I did get myself a reader's card in 1998 at the British Library just to (not only though) flick through them again, which I did. Might have to get that card again! Great share, thanks.

I absolutely love this video and the concept of reviewing this super cool magazine.

I read the NME religiously from early '79 to September '81, when I went abroad, then again for most of '83 before leaving again. Read it cover to cover every week without fail, it introduced me to the Stooges, the Velvet Undeground, the Doors, etc etc etc...

Hi Richard! I so wish I'd kept all my old magazines. Q Mag, NME, etc...too many moves later and my wife had them at the curb many years ago.

Hi Mike. The old NME issues are a really great read and the photos are interesting as you do not see them anywhere else. I will do more skim through vids of NME's in the future.

I had a pile of these from around late 70's onwards, they sat around for so long that i used them to start my log burner, shame really as each time i grabbed a copy i would always spend quite a while flipping through it, mainly looking at the adverts for gigs coming up & the bizzare & amusing band names, thatcher on acid, brent ford & the nylons, attila the stockbroker etc etc

Thanks for watching. At least you had a final read before they became embers!
Band names from the punk/post-punk years were quite something - loved that 'The Three Johns' was two guys named John and a third guy named Phillip who had to change his everyday name to John to fit in!

I remember the lone groover cartoon strip and the adverts for T shirts you could buy mail order.

The mail order ads are great - could buy sweatshirts with 5-colour print for bands from AC:DC to ZZ Top for £6.99!
Thanks for watching. I will do more skim through vids of NME's in the future.

I was an avid reader of the NME, Melody Maker and Sounds. Living in the sticks, I hung on every word. In this single publication; Stray Cats, B52's, Yes, Diana Ross (grudgingly). Marc Bolan, with a worthy history of his accomplishments. Orange Juice (to acknowledged my subjective preference for bands) God Bless Edwin. XTC. Skids. Jethro Tull. Got into Heavy Horses but not so much. Gigs. I saw the Passions and enjoy playing that riff. Steve Harley, did not like the first Clockwork Orange vibe, Late punk. 13:25, to be in Liverpool. Echo and the Bunny men. They were also there.

BoughtThe NME from the week they gave away the Stones Exile flexi disc until mid 1983. Loved the crossword, managed to complete it almost every week.

I'm a Yank who was in Scotland for a year back in 1981. Was in heaven with all the pop music trends going on and was reading all weekly and monthly pop music magazines.
After about a month or so I realized how insane it all was. The Brit public intensely following fads, every new record was the start of something important that would be forgotten the following week and the publications fueling all this madness. The funniest part was the sectarianism, as trend followers would start their own new sect and call the others 'posers'.
The funniest one being when the Stray Cats broke out the then small following of Rockabilly to the world. Were the Brit rockers happy about this? NO! So they started their own sect of Rockabilly and said the Cats has sold them out lol.

My brother always bought NME during the 70s and 80s..I used to read it ( if I got the chance!)..I recall he had a scrapbook that he'd keep album and single reviews in..when I started buying records I found it invaluable.
    Thanks for showing Richard.

1980 was a great year with punk still happening, ska and heavy metal and the new post-punk bands. NME was essential weekly reading.

Great see who was playing where , venues that are no longer as are some of the bands , and the prices £3 to see the specials. I remember paying 5 to see the jam and thinking that was a fortune at the time .

Episode 3 and loving it, great stuff Richard. I can remember now finishing two paper rounds (sometimes three on a Sunday) for 50p and buying two music papers. I feel somewhat tortured still not having a copy of Kaleidoscope, just a curry with Leo Sayer : ( . I am glad it confirms that Indie was called Indie and nothing else! 05:12, I saw QTips live in 81 as support (with their famous singer). They were great. I had one of their singles which had 'Land of a thousand dances' on the B side, great version. Was Marc trying to look like Donovan or Dylan? Totally agree with you, its worth it for the photos alone. I always felt that 'Keep On Working' should have been covered by The Waterboys. Jerry Floyd, good idea for a support band, just stay at the Marquee 🤣. 'Very little to do with rock n roll' 'overdressed clown' Kiss 🤣🤣🤣.
If you are free I hope you might come on Iains stream this evening, the album year is 1980 this week, you could show this NME. cheers 👍

Cheers, Stevie. I imagine these days paperboys are on minimum wage rates so able to buy new vinyl every week. 'Sukha curry with Sayer' sounds appetising, it should have been the title of one of his L.P.'s!
      Episode 4 is forthcoming...

I was an avid reader (and buyer) until PUNK came along, then they reffered to me and others my age as "Boring old farts" so I stopped buying it.Happy memories of it's heyday tho.

Does NME still exist? What a time warp! London had such a great music scene back then! Plenty of Clubs and bands to see. Now I don’t know if it’s the same.
    Thanks!

      @Vinyl-Heaven-And-Hell2023  Před 5 měsíci +1

It still exists as an online UK based website. It has broadened coverage to include gaming and TV as well as films and music. The glory years of NME being essential reading and influential to the UK music scene have long since gone.

Both great and essential reading for US based music lovers. NME was highly influential for the UK music scene from the early '50's and particularly so in the '60's to '80's period.
