- Back to basics this week as I show you how I do an oil and filter change on my 2019 KTM 500 EXC-F.
I apologise for the audio which is not great due to the rain :-(

Having worked on my own bikes and worked for an automotive dealer I thought this video would be boring but I did enjoy watching and found it informative.
Picking up my brand new 500 today. Gonna ride for 2 hours and do the oil change. Thanks for the vid.
Thank you for making and sharing this video. Very helpful for me!
Just bought my first dirt bike (2020 KTM EXC-F 500) after owning a bunch of super sports (other bike is a Panigale V4 S) and this video was super helpful!!! Thank you for putting this up!
Ohana Ross-Roberts I love it! So much fun and a completely new set of skills to learn compared to street bikes. Really have had some great rides finding new places well off the beaten path. Still looking for an aftermarket exhaust though!
Great tip on using the torque wrench. Like it thanks
In almost every bike the oil level is checked when the bike is upright and not on side stand, otherwise it shows less in the window and you may overfill
you have helped me so much - i am just moving from sxf450 to this bad boy 🙂
Thanks Keith. Love your videos and common sense approach to your content. Keep up the awesome work.
I appreciate that!
Great video did my ktm 500 six days 2018 made it nice and easy for me as my first time not being lazy haha
Thanks for making the video! ...helped heaps
Appreciate you, Keith! All the best.
Thanks for making this video. Good info
Great videos. I just finished my first oil change and I had your video playing while I was doing it. I’m trying to do some of the work on my 2020 500 EXC. Next up. Check the valve clearance 😯
Easy-peasy! czcams.com/video/UX5TAMaeRmU/video.html
Great help your video thank you..
Very clear and understanding. 👍🇬🇧
Glad that you pointed out that the manual states 1.2lts but it never is half way up the sight glass if you do the oil change as you have shown, always worth adding that extra 100mm👍🏻
My sight glass is so scrached and pitted I can hardly see thru it....can't wait for that break 😒
Very good vid. Thank you.
KTM's are awesome bikes!!!
My experience is that if you fill the filter and then add *another* 1200 cc’s it hits about 5/8 up the sight glass. Thank you for mentioning the 3rd drain bolt that others forget.
I tried that method today and you are spot on. About 100ml went into the filter.
Hi Keith....how many km' s are you at this point and by the way I love your videos. Look forward to the next one 😁
Merci Keith 👍🏼
Have you ever tried the castrol power 1 racing 10w/50 oil in your 500?
Advice please!
I have a 2019 KTM 500 six days.
The nut on the diagonal drain plug (with the short screen) is stripped and seems tight as hell.
How can I loosen it ?
Does that screen filter service another oil circuit?
Any risk of leaving it and just changing oil via the other drain plugs?
Hi Keith, love the channel. Got a 2020 500 EXC-F, doing same rides you doing :) What is your recommendation for a reasonable maintenance interval? Should it be based in kms or hours? Thanks
I need a kick ass side stand for my ktm 500 exc for adventure riding i carry a lot of gear short legs so I need to stand on to get on bike I’m 110 kg as well 😮 witch on do you think
👌👍
is it 1.2 liters i should fill on the 2018 one too?
never use brake cleaner it will damage the O rings on your plugs. Brake cleaner eats plastic FYI
👍🏼👍🏼
full synthetic oil is not necessary?
Hey Keith, that little torque wrench that your using looks pretty slick. It looks like it may be small enough to ride with. I’ve been looking for a torque wrench small enough to carry on my bike for quite sometime. What brand is that wrench your using and how much does it weigh?
It's a Venzo 1/4" torque wrench. You'll find it under cycling equipment. About $60.
Thanks Keith, I’ll check it out 👍🏾
Good vid. I've got a 450 of same vintage. Any reason why you use Motul instead of Motorex?
Norbert Furlani cheaper because it doesn’t cost $140 AUD a bottle
Hi Keith! I didn't get that part when you're explaining how often do you change the oil? Was that every 2600 km? Thanks for answer in advance
Not sure what I said... but I tend to follow the 15 hours, give or take, depending on how it lines up with trips and what type of riding I'm doing. In my opinion oil is cheap, engines are not.
Keith Jobson , thank you for the answer
Pretty sure you should lean your bike up off the kickstand to measure the site glass so its level
G'day Alex, yes that's correct, and is how I do it. I was doing that in the video but didn't make it clear.
Now I’ve read about the longer screen needing to be in a particular orientation as far as rotation goes ... is that true?
Haven't heard that one!
What brand is that nice little torque wrench?👌
It's a Venzo.. I got it from a bicycle shop.
@@keithjob thank you
I thought the bike was supposed to be level (not on kick stand) to check level
What are those pegs you have on that beast?
Pivot Pegs Mk3, with extensions from CJDesigns
Do u have a link for that torque wrench
It's a Venzo.. I got it from a bicycle shop.
Venzo Bicycle Bike 1/4 Inch Driver - Torque Wrench Allen Key Tools Socket Set Kit 2-24Nm - Small Adjustable www.amazon.com/dp/B00811WQT8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_33ZH5KWPTFK89QSCXV1J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
How much does it pay your every oil change
Ballpark... About $30. Filter is about 10 and oil 20.
Cost
What foot pegs are those?
Pivot Pegz Mk3 with CJD extensions
Dude what the hell your overfilling it!
Can I use 10 w50 ? Anyone? Thanks.
That's exactly what the manual recommends, 10W50 fully synthetic.
Nice vid put some gloves bro
Nicely done but difficult to hear your commentary with the music playing over all the racket in the background.
Yeah sorry about that! The music was unnecessary and I should've waited until the rain stopped. Maybe one day I'll redo it.
And KTM engineers could not design the oil screen in a way that does not allow it to slide off sideways? Sheesh!
