Completely ridiculous! But that's what makes it so funny.
I've seen a film made by B-52 crews who were sitting on Alert. It showed 2nd LT through Lt.Colonel sitting on a bench. The Full Bird walks by and his papers from a folder he's holding fall out onto the floor. The Colonel looks down at them. Then looks at the Lt.Colonel sitting on the bench. He turns and looks at the Major. The Major turns and looks at the Captain. Who turns and looks at the 1st Lt. Who turns and looks at the 2nd Lt. He turns and looks and sees no one. Shakes his head, gets up and picks up the Colonel's papers off the floor.
It was called. The Chain of Command.

Using our towels to carry about 20 balls of ice each, I led them through the dark and we surrounded them.

Yeah, the shovel loads of cash that got put into the Shuttle Program was obscene. And Elon Musk has severely embarrassed NASA to show what you can do with a space program that has actual incentive to improve the way things are done.
      That said,
The Space Shuttle was outrageously spectacular for what it did, when it did it. And a strong argument can be made for justifying the cost, with it's main goal in its last decade of building the ISS, in that while the science that has come out of ISS can in no way justify the Billions of $, just the overhead example of nations working together in cooperation instead of being poised to blow up the planet has an intangible value that cannot be put into dollars and cents.
Others try to justify the cost of shuttle because of other missions like Hubble Deploy and Hubble Repair, but they ignore that it would have been MUCH cheaper to just launch replacements, like the NRO does, rather than going back up to fix it.
Your effort at Patrick must have been brutal.
The design decision to not give them any means of escape was unconscionable.
No one was ever held accountable for that.

Also all the flights I had to make SPACE A because where I was there was only one plane (civilian) in the morning and another outbound in the evening plus being put up in the BOQ, and an officers club card under my door one morning. The most important thing I learned was if I was TDY on ITO to a Naval Base, eat in the BOQ, if it was an AFB, find the NCO club to eat in, and if it was an Army Garrison, find the closest McDonald's.

When I was an F-15 Crew Chief at the USAF Fighter Weapons School at Nellis AFB in Vegas in the early 1980s, we would host a a half dozen F-14s for a week with each class we put through. We did our morning FOD Walk, and the Squids would walk behind us, elbow to elbow, practically nose to the ground picking up every last kernel of desert sand that we invariably missed. Then they would bring a gallon-sized Ziploc bag into our break room and rub our faces in it. Tomcat intakes are much lower to the ground than soaring Eagle intakes, so our jets didn't suck nearly as much. Watching the FOD Walk on this flick, then seeing the orange get fed to the Tomcat had me rolling.
