WTF Happened to SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR?

  • Sarah Michelle Gellar was one of the biggest teen stars of the nineties. Fuelled by her star-making role as the lead on Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she won massive acclaim for her badass, emotional turn as the titular slayer. She parlayed her success into a burgeoning film career, starring in a pair of late nineties teen classics, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions. The latter was a controversial part that could have backfired but instead was a major hit that further propelled her to the top of the A-list.
    She started the 2000’s starring in the big-screen version of Scooby-Doo as Daphne, which was a big enough hit to spawn a sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Around this time, Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its run, and Gellar opted to stretch, taking a role in Richard Kelly’s much-maligned Southland Tales, which has since become a cult classic. Eventually, she would return to TV on the series Ringer, followed by a co-star role in The Crazy Ones, which would ultimately prove one of the last projects for co-star Robin Williams and seemed to be a troubled production.
    In recent years, Gellar, who seems to have one of Hollywood’s most successful marriages with former co-star Freddie Prinze Jr, has slowed down, opting to focus on voice acting (similar to her husband), voicing parts on Star Wars: Rebels, Robot Chicken, and the recent Masters of the Universe: Revelation. She’s been missing from TV and films for some time, with her focusing on family, only re-emerging to weigh in on troubling stories from the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer involving series mastermind Joss Whedon, which have reframed people’s view of what it must have been like working on that show for years. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we chart Gellar’s career and see where she is now while also hoping for a big comeback as Gellar truly is one of a kind.

    She seems to be working pretty much nonstop from her childhood into her adulthood. I remember watching a Freddie Prince Jr. interview that he didn't really have the passion for acting. For him it was just a way to make a living and support his mother. Since his actor father passed away when he was young, so he became actor to earn a living. He didn't want to do the rat race that seems to be the requirement for going up the food chain in Hollywood. Now both of them scale down their works and enjoy their family lives. Which is good for all of them.

    Her films were always enjoyable to me, being a huge horror fan, I adore IKWYDLS and Scream. The Grudge terrified my 10 year old self and Cruel Intensions goes without saying, she ate that role UP! That Ringer programme I also remember being decent and I still to this day defend her as you can’t save a soso script, if it wasn’t for her that show wouldn’t have got passed 3 episodes!
    She keeps a low-key life now and I love that for and Freddie and I find it so amazingly lovely that she is still best friends with Selma Blair, supporting her throughout all her hardships with MS.

I’ll never understand negativity over The Grudge- yes, the original Ju-on was superior, but The Grudge (and The Ring, since we’re here) were outstanding at using all the right techniques of the originals. I’ve been a horror movie fan for almost 40 years and The Grudge is easily in my top 5 scariest American horror movies. I’m glad she’s been able to keep her private life with her family private. Tom Cruise--- He was born, did a couple of good movies, joined a cult, believed his own press, go big headed, did many big movies that got worse and worse, got married -> divorced -- twice, cult still protected him. Only recently lost some of the big headedness for some ok movies with the occasional head swell. ( Do any of his kids have anything to do with him? )

    Buffy was awesome! I was born in 84, and it was the second show I ever remember being religious about having to watch each episode (Monster Madness on TNT was my first) and telling people, especially my older sister, not to talk about it until I could watch it! I remember rushing home after practice or a sports game and praying that there were no mess ups with the VCR recording the show!!

    I think her Buffy obligations really deterred her from being on track to A list jobs. She was offered a role on a Martin Scorsese flick with Leo DiCaprio, but had to turn it down due to filming conflicts with Buffy. That role went to Cameron Diaz. Had she taken that role it would have brought her to a new level of stardom and I feel like she would have gotten more Academy acknowledged roles. Buffy is kind of like a double edge sword for SMG; yes she achieved cult notoriety, but sacrificed a lot of mainstream bookings. In the end though she's happy with her hubby and kids and I follow her on insta and she's nothing but smiles and sunshine so maybe escaping the Hollywood ladder was a good thing 4 SMG.

  • @DragonsOfSnow
    @DragonsOfSnow Před rokem +2

    I thought I had heard she chose to take an acting break because she had kids and wanted to be there to raise them more than it being a lack of acting work. I actually appreciate that she's decided to stay private and puts her family first.
    My only immense disappointment with her was the ongoing talk for years (from her as well, not just fans) that she supposed to produce and star in a movie version of the Alice video game (the demented version of Alice in Wonderland). I think I heard she had even gone as far as buying the rights to the potential film or something like that but never did anything with it. That's the only thing I would have loved to have seen her actually follow through with. Otherwise, I wish her the best in whatever she decides to do in her life.
