David: "Angel was all brooding in the beginning..."
Everyone else: "In the BEGINNING?!?" 🤣
Tara’s murder was devastating, Joyce’s death was heartbreaking, Anya’s death was unnecessary.
I agree!
Totally agreed! Anya's death seemed so misplaced.
Didn't even remember Tara until the recap...lol

James marsters English accent was so convincing I aways assumed he was English. Spike is clearly based on Billy Idol.
I think in the show once Spike had said Billy Idol stole his look.

I wouldn't have said "nothing clicked until she met Tara", because her and Oz had a great love story too. She was lucky because she found 2 great loves that brought out the best in her.
I agree with you. Willow and Oz was a huge love story. One of the most heartbreaking episodes was Willow falling apart when Oz left. I think it's rather disingenuous to sideline the Willow and Oz relationship in order to big up the gay one. Willow was clearly bi-sexual and that should be celebrated by both love stories to Oz and Tara.
I think it has a lot to do with bisexuality STILL being considered taboo. Even worse in those days.
I think Oz and Willow were my fav couple in the whole series. Here she was this kooky brainy but so clearly awesome girl who gets with this cool guitar playing awesome guy. I just loved their story. And really horribly felt it when he ditched her to find out more about his werewolfness. That eps where he and the other werewolf/rock girl are talking and they both kind of make fun of Willow for not knowing some drum reference. Still kills me to think about it. How he basically rejects her for not getting him; like he finally realized she's not cool enough for him. It was horrible but done so well.
@@stephenheart1916 I'm sure of it.
As a gay woman of course I loved Willow and Tara but Oz was the perfect man, the perfect boyfriend ❤💕!

I miss watching this with my husband after losing him to cancer last year. Our shared love of the show and characters is probably what really sealed the deal for me, and before we got married we would have date nights and Binge the Box sets. I agree, that monologue that Anya gave when Joyce died makes me cry every time! This show changed my life. I think it did that for a lot of us. Buffy never gave up, not ever. That is so inspiring. I was a Buffy/Spike gal. I adored Willow & Tara so much. They were true magick.
Can't watch the Joyce episode. Seen the entire series literally more times than I can count and that episode absolutely ruins me every time.
It's Buffy and Spike forever! I'll get attacked prolly for this but not a huge Angel fan!
@@sidneygreenglass106 I agree! Angel was too selfish for my taste.
@@sidneygreenglass106 Angel's pull to Buffy was more or less fate. It didn't feel emotional. Spike was always the stronger personality for me. Angel was a wet nappy. He was cursed, that's why he needed his soul. Spike, on the other hand, had things to prove. He wanted to be better and he would do anything to prove that he WAS, that he was worthy. Spike's arch is also heartbreaking but his character growth from William to Spike to a champion metaphorically slays.
Magic ... not magick.
Hard to pick a favorite character but Giles was absolutely up there for me. A shame Anthony wasn't apart of this

I'm out of touch of tv series for many many years now..but I loved Buffy Vampire Slayer. Do they still make series like that ?
I know no one will see this… but Joyce’s death helped me through my fathers death in 2005. It broke me, but having seen death handled in such respectful but real terms made things feel more bearable. How Sarah or the episode as a whole didn't get an Emmy for the body is messed up. The fact that she didn't get any Emmys for the show is robbery

I have the box set too! almost done with my annual rewatch of Buffy then starting my annual rewatch of Angel
As a little girl who grew up (born in 2000) and had a father who loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer and encouraged my growth and independence and Buffy-ness. I can't explain how important Buffy Summers (and characters similar to her like Veronica Mars and Lucy Pevensie, etc) was to my childhood and view of myself. I thought being more masculine and negating my femininity was the only way to seem bigger and more empowered until I witnessed them just being themselves and growing more comfortable in themselves. Now I'm at the age where Buffy was ending college and I feel like I could be Buffy. That I make my own destiny and no one has more control over me than I do.
Respect for ur Dad who encouraged u to watch Buffy bcos I would do when I have children in the future 😆

This show and Angel were my parents, big brother, and best friend all in one. The lessons I learned, bonds to the characters, and the fact that it gave me solace in a time that I felt most alone when surrounded by others, well, it did nothing short of change my life. When I finally matriculated to highschool, not only was I better prepared, but I deeply enjoyed it. You see, I had a group of friends in the cast, allowing me to better understand others and have the confidence to be myself. At least as far as one can be in highschool. To the cast: thank you wholeheartedly.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my comment. Take care and God bless. ✝️
Yesss
seeing Anya's pain as she tries to process Joyce's death is so real. is she even acting? I had to explain death to a 4 year old recently and it was all of this. the dialogue was spot on, even 20+ odd years later. Emma did so good!
One of the all time best shows to ever grace the small screen!
I feel lucky to have been alive and growing up while Buffy was on the air.
As I look at society, I feel blessed to have lived in the best era's where FUN still existed without cancellations
First, I can't believe they didn't even mention the fact that Alyson Hannigan met her husband Alexis Denisof on the show. He played the other Watcher Wesley on Buffy and then Angel. He was in the group sitting on the left end. Second, I was on Team Angel until Spike came on. While I agree that Angel will always be Buffy's true love, Spike loved her more than Angel. Angel only loved Buffy when he had a soul. When the curse was lifted and he lost his soul, Angelus did not love Buffy. Spike loved Buffy even without a soul and fought really hard to get his soul back so he could be worthy of her. At least that is my humble opinion.
Love your take on this. Agreed!
I mean as much as people hate it and if SMG herself got death threats joss can’t really say it openly……. In this interview he literally said that in terms of something long term spike is the one Buffy would end up with and all the rest. Between him and Angel spike was already matured in a way Angel never was as individuals. Even SMG herself said spike understood a part of Buffy no one else did including Buffy herself. Spike loved all of her including the bad parts. That’s something Angel wouldn’t have been able to deal with especially with his own baggage dragging.
Completely agreed! And in the end, Spike was there to do whatever it took to help Buffy. ❤
@@vikkidonn yes and in the comics Buffy IS with Spike. Also Angel totally moved on in his own series, Buffy was so out of the picture by the end of it. If anyone, Cordelia was in. So anyone seeing both shows cant tell me they would root for Buffy and Angel. I love Angel so much, especially spinoff Angel, but they werent a good fit anymore. Spike was the mature version.
I totally agree with everything you said!
Gosh I loved this show. Being in high school while Buffy, Dawson's Creek, etc was on the WB was the best.
Buffy, Dawson's Creek, Popular (before Ryan Murphy was a household name), Roswell, Smallville, Everwood, the occasional 7th Heaven episode, and "Zoe...". Great times. Then, there were Friday night sitcoms like Sabrina's college years, "Raising Dad" with Saget, Ritter, and Larson, and Maybe It's Me.

Anya's monolog in "The Body" is so memorable.
I always thought that scene where vampire Willow caresses human Willow and she goes from being creeped out to confusion to arousal in less than a minute was an amazing performance by Alyson Hannigan. I felt this was a writer's way of clearing the path for the character finding true love with another female character.
That season the writers decided one of Buffy's friends was going to be gay in college. It's why Xander had the LArry interactions, was a 50/50 shot and if Amber Benson didn't have such good chemistry with Alyson, Xander would have been introduced to one of Riley's friends.
Weird comment especially since she was supposed to be a teen girl in highschool 😐

They captured so many human young adult moments in a fantasy show with monsters and heros. It still blows me away just how well orchestrated it all was and sometimes not even on purpose! As a young teen, watching Buffy and Angel it really connected to the excitement, but also fear, of first love. Being vulnerable with someone for the first time as a teenage girl, there's always fears of rejection or doing something wrong. When Angel lost his soul, they played right into those fears that a guy will flip a switch after being sexual with a girl and turn into a jerk. Angel was someone we knew would never do that, but being a supernatural show, anything can happen. We got to really see what that kind of broken trust looked like from a young girl's viewpoint and be a part of the feelings of confusion and shock at Angel's switch.
On the contrary watching the show helped me finding what i really wanted in a man, what was truly good in this world despite all the evil, that even a Monster can feel love and emphaty, (thanks to Spike) and we aren't Just Black and White Monsters and Heroes, that we can be the villain in someone else story, (thanks to Faith) that we can be Heroes even without superpowers (thanks to xander, dawn, Anya and Giles) and even the Heroes are fragile, weak, and sometimes lone (thanks to Buffy). I really learn the true love in every shape thanks to Buffy and spike, tara and Willow, Anya and xander, and Buffy/dawn/Joyce family love. I thanks joss whedon for helping me throught my teen years and adulthood, he really helped me

And then we jump to the musical, and I remember all the lyrics, it's like watching it for the first time. It's also heartbreaking when she tells her friends that they ripped her out of heaven. Similar to 'Charmed', this show has been a joy to watch from beginning to end.
My daughter ( R.I.P. baby girl) loved this show so much , that she named our kitten Angel. It was perfect ,since he was dark, moody, and liked to bite.
How did she die?
@@michaelhawkins7389 the F dude ???? For real ??
@@alexsim8063 My father died the summer after I graduated highschool. I didn’t see some of my friends for a year or so and when I saw them again no one brought it up. I found out it was because they were afraid it would remind and hurt me. It’s not like I could ever forget that my father had been alive and wasn’t anymore, and it hurt me much more to hear no mention of him.
I can’t speak for Patricia but I think the question was ok.
@@beckynot losing a parent is very hard… but losing a kid is unnatural and unbearable… it’s not ok to ask such a thing to someone you don’t know online..it’s not a friend, it’s a CZcams stranger… you know what I mean ?
@@alexsim8063
I assure you, losing a parent at 17 is unbearable. I do think losing a child would be still worse, but I would rather my (theoretical) child’s time on the earth be acknowledged that not. Perhaps not her death, but certainly my loss. Especially if I introduce the subject. Perhaps “I’m so sorry for your loss”, would be a better way to acknowledge it.
I loved the show. I was sad it ended ... but it had to end. And now it has iconic status. I hope many more generations enjoy it as much as I did 😊
We do🤗
Well said I watched it with my son's before I hadn't daughter and then watched it with her as a teen..I'm looking forward to watch ING it with my grandkids one day
I rewatched it with my husband, and now we're rewatching it with our sons! 🥰❤️
I’ve put off watching this reunion for 5 years, damn. I just cried my eyes out because this show means so much to me. I remember, I was twelve and visiting my grandparents… I felt really out of place, so my grandmother sat me down on the couch and put on Buffy. Within three weeks I had completely binged the show and for the rest of that year, it would be my hyperfixation. Now I’m nineteen and my best friend and her little sister are slowly getting through the seasons and even a friend from therapy is starting to watch it. Whenever I fall into a bad place, I always put on a few of my favourite Buffy episodes to remind me that I’m strong and I can fight through it. Such a beautiful and empowering show.
Within three weeks? Your grandmother actually had the Buffy tapes or DVDs in her personal collection?
Just started to rewatch this series because I was too young to remember most of the earlier seasons. And can I just say, that the things they did, said and how they took care of the characters is simply unmatched in today's TV shows! I can even see the influence of Angel and Buffy's love story playing out in modern tV shows today
Buffy and Sarah Connor (Terminator) were my 2 strong female role models that helped me hang tough in engineering school. Despite pervasive mysogeny I graduated in 1987 with a BSEE and have had an exciting life. I still pull out the DVDs from time to time for encouragement. Thank you Buffy and Sarah!
1987? Did miss something, Buffy came out in 1997, did you mean 1997?
@@qs4177 I stand corrected.
Plus Ellen Ripley 😉
Max of Dark Angel
I have always been Team Spike. His chemistry with Buffy is electrifying!
It's because of him and Buffy, I started to watch Buffy. 😍
Felt forced to me
@@HazelEyes485I concur, very forced. If Angel didn’t have a spin-off, I think they would’ve brought him back to Buffy at the end.
😍
Buffy and spike are lit, their relationship was just ... 😍 also Buffy and angel they have this unique bond, but spike is,.... I loved their relationship!
They captured the 90's.
Watching this literally send me back in time every year i watch it.
It is weird to watch this knowing James Marsters, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Charisma Carpenter had bad experiences with Joss and are essentially holding it in during this interview.
I wonder if we could have versions of these shows where Whedon could be held accountable and they get to lay into him.
It looked like he was in the photo shoot, so he was probably in the very next room while they were doing this. I should read more about it as I dont know if he exists as a bogey man figure of trauma for them or just a toxic individual they just dont want to talk to.
I know, how can they even be around the show when their boss was mean to them once 20 years ago 😂
@@no_lives_left it was a bit more than once 20 years ago, it was a sustained campaign that made several of them miserable, you dont have to put up with it, so why should they?
@@dorianleakey Maybe you should read more than the clickbait titles. Because his alleged abuse and sexual misconduct basically amounts to not getting along with some actors and cheating on his wife. None of these are good reasons to purposely destroy someone’s stellar 30 year career! I’ve read all these articles and the worst thing that I can find Joss Whedon said was calling charisma Carpenter fat behind her back. We live in a world full of rich people that get away with sexual assault and rape but you guys want to destroy Joss Whedon‘s career?
@@no_lives_left This is the most ridiculously charitable interpretation possible, actively working hard to not understand, deeply dishonest.
Yet you feel like the smart reasonable one for being an authoritarian arse who think bosses should be allowed to be bastards to their employees.
None of them stuck for him, not a single one, yet you spin it while talking about clickbait titles.
Weak, weak and pathetic and authoritarian.
The difference between Angel and Spike where Buffy was concerned is Angel was high school, first love, growing up. Spike was grown, accepting her darkness, getting who she was.
Also spike won't be any different if they slept together
Yea but with her relationship with Angel, she learned how to mature especially after they broke up, she knew that she had to stop it, so did Angel. With Spike it started out very toxic, you can just tell that this was a very destructive relationship, Buffy was just trying to feel something and that was Spike. I do think that Spike was in love with her which was sweet and yea they did have chemistry, but I think the whole Spike/Buffy thing helped Spike more than Buffy, in terms of trying to find who he was. Buffy maybe did love him, but I don't think she could have loved him the way Spike wanted her to, I think maybe that's why he rejected her at the end. She did say she loved Angel more than she will ever love anything in this life.
What do you mean? Angel also accepted her and knew her better than spike? Plus Buffy/ Spikes relationship was very toxic...
@@gingershellkittens6620 because he didn't have a soul. when Angel didn't have a soul, he stalked and terrorised her, murdered her friends. I'd say that's pretty 'toxic'. If you're going to compare them at least be fair about it. After Spike had a soul, his relationship with Buffy was based on trust and mutual respect. Angel knew a teenager and then was gone most of the time; Spike knew Buffy as an adult, the worst and the best of her.
@@irrumnaaz Yes and Elena Gilbert say the same thing for Stefan Salvatore, that doesn't mean anything
I liked Angel at first, but I quickly got tired of his whole, "Why must the sad clown of unhappiness torment me so," stichk, but then I really got into Spike. Oh Goddess, did I ever have a thing for Spike. (drool)
i can relate to that. I was crazy about Angel and never really paid attention to Spike since I thought he was annoying...but then I gave him the chance and actually watched him grow as a character and felt that love he had for buffy..and oh my lord...im sorry Angel but I love Spike more now. xD
I felt that Angel and Buffy had real chemistry and things seemed natural and organic between them. Most of all, their love for each other was mutual. With Spike, I thought it was a one-sided, unrequited love on his part. Often women can be won over/worn down by that soul-rending, persistent, damn it all approach, but I just felt he forced it too much.
Spuffy fan through and through!!! Spike had so much depth and character whereas angel just felt so monotone IMO.
Spike literally went to the ends of the earth to get a soul!!! Angel was cursed with a soul...he didn't want it. Yes it was what made him who he was but it was a curse. Spike sought out a soul knowing how much suffering it may cause him.
The way Alexis smiles everytime Alyson is speaking just melts my heart ❤
Notice he was literally the ONLY ONE who was there and wasn't interviewed AT ALL. Poor guy...
I watch Buffy and Angel atleast once every year. Was so in love with these shows growing up. Could not wait to come home from school on the days Buffy aired.
This was and still is my all time favorite show. There will never be a show like this for me again, I have watched it from beginning to end many times.
I wish there was a Buffy reboot! This was my favorite show! And 20 yrs later, still is!
Nah ,they would do it no justice at all.
Leave it be, its perfect.
Or at least a movie
They would just ruin it. And it doesnt need a reboot. Maybe a sequel, but really they would ruin it.
and Angel
@@gazzaroony Meh, if it stunk, then just don't watch it...
But I want MOAR MOAR, lol
A handful of the shows like The Body, The Gentlemen, Once More With Feeling, are among the greatest television ever produced.
Facts
I HATE musicalS SO once more with feeling was horrible to me but add in I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR U and these are the best episodes ever!!!
I am currently watching the series for the third time, and I still think that it is a master piece.
This will always be one of my all time favorite shows. This was something my grandma and I watched together. It holds such a special place in my heart. Willow will always be one of my favorite characters because I see myself. And totally Team Spike in all aspects. The way he challenged her and made her push the boundaries is such an amazing thing.
I watched it with my grandmother too! Such good memories. We had a good natured argument going hit over a decade about Angel vs Spike. She was always team Spike 😁 I loved it. Watch the series again always makes me miss her more.
I was always a team angel 😇 because when I first watch it j was in tears 😭 when had to kill angel in season 2 she gave angel hope and a fur-there ❤when he said to Buffy I love 💕you I tried to but I can’t stop that put me in tears because I knew Buffy loved 🥰 him not spike. In the last season she told spike I love ❤️ you he said no you don’t but thank for saying it! Because It gave me hope that one day Buffy and angel would end up together
@@Dutchab Angel was her first love. It was young and innocent. When in season 2 she had to kill him yes it was tragic and even I cried, but we all know what happens. Spike though challenged Buffy. And Angel only loved her when he had a soul. For Spike even without a soul he loved her. He made her feel things Angel never made her feel. They were friends, and they fought side by side, and even lovers. Spike made her feel when she thought she didn't belong after coming back from the dead. That is why I love Spike. He went and got a soul for her. He fought for her. He was there for Dawn and he cared for Joyce. He was who Buffy needed.
@@07311986wow you'r totally rihtg I liked angel too, but the real man was spike but no one talks about that, he love her for real witouht a soul, angel was very mean with her without soul from that moment I get over him
Team Spike hell yeah count me in 😄 Spike sacrificed himself for Buffy, meanwhile Angel wasn’t there on the doomsday smh.
Looking back on this reunion, now knowing about Joss, we were lucky they were all willing to get back together and look past Joss, for their fans and friendship. Only person I wanted to see here was Faith/Eliza Dushku. Buffy was all I knew growing up and I've met a couple of the cast since then. Buffy will always mean a lot to me as it helped make me the person I am today.
Eh, i believe james marsters and charisma carpenters stories about him being an asshole. And its obviously true that he slept around on his wife
But i honestly feel that michelle trachtenberg purposefully told her story in a really vague way so people would imagine the worst and it probably wasnt nearly the kind of thing most people imagine based on the words she used
Whine and complain.....thank you for the big paycheck! If it was that bad someone would have done something about it. Oh it was soul crushing......cha ching to their bank accounts! Get over it!
@@mrbear1302 You must be fun at parties.
Good thing he wasn’t sitting with them lol he did his interview part alone it seems
They separated them. And if you pay attention. He was only in the photo shoot, but they didn’t show people chatting with him.
The interview of the cast been separate from Whedon, is now, so obviously, a necessary healthy boundary for those who experienced toxic behaviors from Joss.
Faith/Eliza not been there was disappointing.
I still remember the excitement of getting a new buffy video box set for Christmas when I was a teen and I’m now in my 30’s. I genuinely can’t pick a fave season overall but season 5 and the glory/dawn storyline was amazing. I love the older episodes too with different evils each episode. Just a masterpiece and my favourite series of all time🥰
I think season 5/6 are my favorite
Joyce's death has me in tears every time I watch it. Anya's reaction was so emotional because she was trying to express feelings that she hasn't felt in her years of being a vengeance demon and she just could not understand what was happening.
Her naivety was so genuine.
This played every Tuesday night when I was growing up, I'm 33 now but wow the impression it made on me. Sarah is iconic, Charisma is an absolutely fantastic person. David Boreanaz went on to do Angel before Bones and he is just phenomenal. So many great things came out and from this show. It's amazing, definitely a go to when I have nothing to watch.
I had the BIGGEST crush on Spike for years
Thank you so much for making this documentary reunion!
This show will always hold a special place in my ❤. I learned so many things about life from these actors.
I started watching it last year. And finished it back in early March. Buffy is such an amazing show. It made me nostalgic for an era I wasn't even born into.
The one show that my teenage children and mom and dad, all sat down to watch together! We had family night on Tuesdays!
I am currently watching Buffy and Angel at the same time. It’s everything I could ever ask for and it makes me happy.
OMG not seen this show for 20 years, and when they did the scene with moms death i still bloody cried.
I met Amber Benson and she was incredibly awesome. She was one of my favorite stars who was even better in real life. She was so great.
Why wasn't Eliza in this? Why would they not mention Faith?!! She was a huge part in shaping who Buffy became
I agree, i always felt like the actress had a fall out of something? They invited some obscure love i barely remember
Blame Josh!
Agree! She was a huge part of the show. Glad you commented that cuz I thought the same thing although I watched the several times
I wish they'd have included Faith in this! I really hope they do a reboot, I'd be in 200%, I loved this show and I'm watching the reruns now! ❤️
Faith was AMAZING
Would you be 5 by 5 about that ?! ;-)
@@6Jillybeans Sure would, B!
I hope she's not here because she was not available. Not because she wasn't invited.
I know I can't believe she wasn't in this! She represents a lot the struggles you have as teenagers, and that's pretty. Much what this reunion focuses on. Love the show but really bummed no faith
Not sure if this was intended but I’ve always seen Angel’s turn into Angelous as a representation of a guy getting what he wants from a girl and showing his true colors after. Which is just a heart wrenching concept. This show was too deep sometimes lol
It was intended to be a pretty explicit metaphor (I think I;ve watched the director commentary more times than I have the normal episodes at this point.).
That was the intended metaphor, yes. Vampires were intended to be seen as predators and struggles that you defeat and overcome. It's why Joss hated people loving Spike, who was supposed to be killed off, because loving the vampire was exactly what you shouldn't be doing. But it stuck, and (whether Joss likes it or not) the show was ultimately better for it.
Loved this series, watched it multiple times, was lucky enough to meet James Marsters at the Calgary Comicon a few years back, not only is he just as gorgeous but he was so kind, pretty shy and just so nice. Stunning in, stunning out. I met John Barrowman (Captain Jack Doctor Who) at the same time as a joint photo op, could not have been a better day for me. They were total gentleman and so kind to the fans, even the pushy event organizers were put in their places if they tried to rush us through. 100% star quality. Much respect for them both.
wow, Charisma still looks fantastic
This was so very much needed…. I love every bit of this reunion
This makes me wanna rewatch the show. It also reminded me of the utter OBSESSION I had for David Boreanaz back then and honestly, it still tracks.
Thank you People for this Cast Reunion, I remember being just a girl when I started watching this series which I consider the first supernatural-teen series I binge, since then my love for the vampire and dark concept, this brought me so many memories, and I do agree with the cast, one of my fav episodes was the one they all loss their voice, that scream at the end from Buffy was epic, of course there were many more that still live in my memories.
Definitely one of my fave tv series when i was a teen. I love Buffy just made me happy seeing this reunion.🖤❤️
One of the GOATs. I feel in the past few years it’s been a bit forgotten about. This show needs to be on every streaming platform in existence.
It was so nice seeing them together again , I loved watching this show growing up.
