I had a historic wooden scrub plane from my inherited set of woodworking tools that needed a makeover.
The handle needed to be glued to the body again and the body itself needed some sanding and a finish from kettle boiled linseed oil. I sharpened the blade on diamond and water stones and I present multiple methods to do so. Rust removal was done with a drill and a copper brush bit.

Thank you much Sir.🎉
These are beautiful planes. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for letting me know :)
For scrub planes they don't really need to be sharp since they are the least precise tool. I take mine to the stone wheel and its sharp for hours
I get your point but it's also good to have your axe sharp even though it's not a precise tool in the hand of most people.
hi, em, so basically I went up to youtube to see how to restore my old woodworking planes also passed down the family, and it happened to be that you have the exactly same ones. yay. im planning to restore them soooon so these videos will help me a lot. Sadly I have wormhoses in them :( gotta fill them with epoxy resin or sm. and the iron blades are like 100 time worst than your ones, mine straight ass has these bumps everywhere and is literally red :D I will loooove cleaning those... I will be looking forword to see your bench plane restoration video in near future coz I have one too xD
Good luck with your planes. I hope you will enjoy them and the restoration process.
I sharpened mine the same way. Got it "scary sharp", easily removing arm hair. But using it on wood is really difficult. The mouth is wide, but the plane just generally does tear out, no shavings. Help? (Yes, I adjusted the depth both high and low, trying different settings)
Dear LitoGeorge - you sold that plane today didnt you? You gave away a gift to a young man who is enthusiastic about wood working. Thats great. How did you sort the plane out? Oh yes, you adjusted the frog nicely. Flattened the frog, flattened the irons back, adjusted it all. And then it worked great didnt it? Congratulations past me. I hope you enjoy building the next woodie scrub plane. Go well.
Nice work.
Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate it.
The “horn” in front of these planes,
Is that strictly a German thing ?
I like it a lot and wonder why English and American planes didn’t incorporate it.
I am not sure how strictly German it really is but Japanese planes lack it as well.
Thanks for the videos. I have a very old but very good axe that someone has pounded with a sledgehammer so that the Poll has mushroomed, also the "edge" is more like a topography of the alps. Suggestions??
I would cut away the mushroomed parts with an angle grinder or dremel tool like you can see in my axe restauration and wedge maintenance videos.
If your edge is really that bad you need to reshape it. You can use a good file but I would prefer a belt sander like you can see in my video about sharpening curved draw knives.
Why flatten it, it's a scrub plane? Why remove all that lovely patina for that matter. Epoxy?! Just sharpen it - not excessively and only by hand - and use the darn thing ;)
Just because I like it this way ;)
Grinding the steel with stones and one 3000 grid for a scrub pane??? Is this a joke?
It's absolutely over the top but I like my planes this way.
