I grew up in LIC & me & my friends always went to Roosevelt Island! It’s definitely a hidden gem in NYC!!!
Is Roosevelt Island Haunted 👻 ?
Hey..walk around central park tru sidewalk....longgggg walkkkk hhahha love my City
my husband and I actually are looking into moving to the apartments you showed last lol we where surprised by it being a mental institution. so thanks for that lol (we will still be going 🤣😅) also thank you for this video because we questioned the same about what was available on the island for residents as we couldn't find anything on CZcams.

"When you walk by a Subway... it has that smell"
Very true, in more ways than one 😂
hahahahha
Jacob actully they all getting clean every nite from 1am to 5am...so they all very clean latetly... but watch a Video goin to Coney Island in the 1980s...scary
Can attest to this fact - even the Subways here in Dubai smell the same!
NYC is such a vibe and you show it off so well dude! Great video!
Thanks.
Yes John is amazing
Hi.
I grew up on RI, was one of the first families to move in during the mid 70s.
It has changed a lot.
I still visit my family there, and the views never disappoint.
It's almost 100% developed now, but as a seven year old boy in 1977 when it was all old abandoned buildings, with negligent 70s parents, it was heaven.
I have flown 20 times in my life , and 12 times I’ve flown to New York due to its cultural diversity, places to explore and foods to try, this year i have not travelled , I am so thankful for Jon for doing these videos , it makes me smile
The thing is I’ve been looking for a true NY guide .. this dude really serves that purpose
Oh the memories.... I used to visit Rosevelt Island back in the early 1980s. My friend's mom lived there on Main street. I ride the tram and would see Al Lewis riding it as well. He was the actor that played Grandpa on the show The Munsters. He owned a restaurant in the village. Oh the memories!!
I knew Al when I lived there. Interesting guy. TALL! He would wear this huge cowboy hat that made him top off at about seven feet.
How many 6' 6" 90 year olds do you know? 🙂
The walk from Queens to Roosevelt Island is a nice one too
I should try it!
There's also the entire south part of the island too! FDR Four Freedoms Park is great but it's not always open.
it's open daily except Tuesday....
The first time i went there around 4:30 the guy was closing the gate even though it's supposed close at 5pm, I was so annoyed.
Lots of great memories coming to Roosevelt Island as a kid - always used to go by the lighthouse
Lucky kid!
i lived in an airbnb on roosevelt island back in 2017. LOVED IT! taking the Roosevelt tram to and from manhattan every day is a dream. the view is different every day. and they have EVERYTHING there. the stores open till late and it's really safe to travel in and out of the island at night. i wish i spent more time there and walk around the island. didn't realize so many historical landmarks there. highly recommended.
Awesome
The last three times me and my partner visited NYC we stayed in ArnBnbs in Roosevelt Island. We loved it! Very calm place, no traffic, great views, good infrastructure, subway station and that lovely tram, all this next Manhattan.
Thanks for making the video. I have been living in NYC 40 years and have never been to Roosevelt Island🤷🏽♂️😉. After watching your video, I will go there. 🙏🏽👍🏽👏🏽
Awesome!
I live across the river in Astoria, Queens.
But Roosevelt Island still my favorite place to go for jog or just hang out. Such a peaceful laid back place in the middle of the City.
And the view of the Manhattan skyline, specially at night, still takes my breath away.
Miss NYC so much! Never been to Roosevelt Island and great to know this through your video. And great that everyone is practicing safety protocols too.
I love taking the tram over to Roosevelt Island. The views alone from the tram are worth the trip and the island has a very calm and picturesque vibe which is a nice escape from the madness of the city.
Hi Jon,
I absolutely love your videos. I am from Germany and have lived in New York for three month with my wife during an internship program last fall/winter. We used to watch your videos every single time we went on a trip or a little adventure. They were so helpful in educating us about New York, which quickly had become my favorite city in the world.
Particularly our trip to Roosevelt Island is one that I will always remember as a very calming and quiet experience, compared to all the hustle and bustle in let’s say Mid town, and I really think you captured that vibe.
Thank you so much for you amazing work!
Max
Thanks for telling everybody about NY’s greatest secret 😂
Me and the wife frequent Fuji East for dinner dates a lot (pre-covid obviously) but it’s definitely one of my zen spots...used to go there as a kid too to “escape”.
Great video...thanks.
Amazing tour! Thanks!
The views are absolutely stunning from the cable car any time of the day.
I love this video. I will make it a must to go visit this island very soon. Thanks for your awesome job other this video.
I was raised in the Astoria housing projects which is also across the river from Roosevelt Island. The island was an awesome escape in the 80’s.
Thanks a lot for your videos, it's priceless in these days to visit NYC sitting on my french sofa !
Adding Roosevelt Island to the (growing) list of spots to check out when we are (finally) able to go to NYC again. Another great video, thank you!!!
Another amazing video! Thank you!
NYC-is-NYC, and nothing will ever change that, but, NYC is not just the places, but the people too. I am hopeful that after this Corona situation is over that there are as many people and places in NYC that will keep its character in place so that future generations can experience NYC in similar relationship to the previous ones.
That is impossible. I am 66 and already many of the types of people I'd see out and about are no longer around. There are local accents which have virtually vanished. That's just the way it is when waves of new people constantly displace the old, and many who grew up in NYC - whole families which used to be here - leave.
I love this video!! Such great views!
Love the history! It's beautiful there.. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. So beautiful
The walk in front of the river it is beautiful, I like it very much, I will definitely be there for my next and expected trip to the city of the skyscrapers ✈️
I love all your content, thank you as always!
The last time me and my wife were in NY 3 years ago, we went to Roosevelt Island. It was so peaceful and hardly anyone was going around. It was quite snowy and cold at the time though but it the views of Manhattan were outstanding.
I hope everyone is doing well 🙏
Great video. Thank you!
Thanks for the message of optimism 🇧🇷
I am so bummed that i never knew about this island when i visited in December! oh well....guess i gotta come back! Thanks Jon, i watched so many of your videos before visiting from Johannesburg South Africa, and your vids helped me a lot! Keep them coming!!
Boet, I first learned of this island in the movie, Dark Water with Jennifer Connolly. It's fascinated me ever since; I hope to visit New York and go there one day. Hi from Jozi.
Yes that subway smell!! I took the subway for the third time since March recently and I weirdly miss it!
Great to see the other end of the island, as it's so easy to go the "normal" way and miss out on a really good view.
We went to see Roosevelt's monument, a great view and not to be missed, but we'll worth walking to the other end too.
Keep well you both 👍
Thanks for making this video. I've said I want to go over to Roosevelt so many time. It's a must on my next trip.
I agree Subway totally has a very distinct smell.
That was a great tour. You answered 85% of my questions about what I want to see when I come. Much love from Texas!! Thx.
we really enjoyed when we visited it 2 years ago, it had so so different vibes from other parts of the city and we had a wonderful morning. also that day there was some kind of running race and it gave a pretty peculiar touch to the day
Been thinking about making the trip. Thanks so much for doing this vid.
i had the same idea on labor day, and man, it was the most peaceful place i've been in the city! Took the ferry coming from downtown, and it was perfect! if you haven't, walk the queens side of the island as well. it's quieter, and it's really interesting to see how the waterfront has developed (and hasn't developed) over there.
i've really loved doing little adventures in nyc during covid. always loved nyc, but appreciate it in a new way! i'm happy this video popped up as recommended.
Roosevelt Island looks beautiful! Definitely high on my list for when I visit NYC.
Thank you so much for your video, I did visited Roosevelt Island two years ago BUT know nothing about that, very appreciate all of your amazing video about NY city ‼️
Great video! Visited RI a year ago. We loved the Amish Market, bought some wonderful fruit there and ate it while watching the views, a really sweet break in our hectic schedule 😊
I’m impressed at how nice this island looks. Never considered visiting but I might include it on my future 2022 trip
What a cool spot! I’ve been to NYC so many times and never been. Adding to my list for next time!
Thank you for being so transparent about the city during these times. You’re still my favorite youtuber
I appreciate that
A place of tranquility in NYC, must visit
Loved this vlog! And yes, all Subway restaurants smell the same!
I miss New York City so much!!! Didn't even get to take the tram last time I was there! Thank you for the video! Feels like I was there with you!
We are visiting NYC next week.
made me decide to go to the island on my next trip to NYC- Thanks
Thanks for the updated video, Roosevelt Is was one place we didn't get to on our last trip, so we are looking forward to getting there next time.
For sure!
I love that tram ride! I was always surprised when I told people about it and they'd never even knew it existed. Lemme tell ya, it's definitely a must-do when visiting NYC!
i was there last october the view from the cable car is crazy , and that so quit there , not feel like in a middle of manhattan
cant wait to back there
I've been to NYC twice but never even thought to visit Roosevelt Island. Thanks for sharing! Hopefully Texans will be welcomed back soon.
I love here over 20 years and the island has definitely gone through changes
Live here.
This is a nice one!
Pleasure to watch. Thanks.
You're welcome.
The eccentric Al Lewis (AKA Grandpa Munster) was famously a resident and popular community leader on Roosevelt Island until his death in 2006.
yes he lived in my building no smoking allowed but you can always smell his cigar and know he was near
Yess..subway smells good to me,!!..I would go to Roosevelt Island for sure,..lots of history there . .
Agree, Subway has a one of a kind aroma, the same on every continent.
I'm from South Africa, and I first heard about Roosevelt Island in the movie, Dark Water with Jennifer Connolly. This was my first exposure to this island and its residents, it has fascinated me ever since, and I hope to visit one day.
I love the tram ... great views
Yes I’ve been to Roosevelt island.
Wow! That’s amazing that there was such a long line for the team because when we shot our video highlighting our Roosevelt Island tram ride 2 1/2 months ago there was absolutely no line and very few people taking advantage of the beautiful views of NYC! Roosevelt Island is truly an oasis in the City!
Thanks my friends.. and our video together is kicking butt. So glad it got big numbers.
Here Be Barr that is so great to hear! We are glad that your viewers are enjoying our collaboration video and hope we can film another collab and highlight even more small businesses which are struggling to survive in NYC during Covid!
Great content, Jon. Will have to put it on my list of places to visit next time I'm in NYC :)
Thanks Richard
I forgot to thank you for the video, great as all your videos 🎖️
I missed you Jon, on Roosevelt Island this past Monday, Sept 7. My friend and i also walked from FDR 4 Freedoms Park to the Lighthouse. My friend and i agree that the views are very nice and it's a great place for families to live. Personally, i prefer living in Manhattan...where the only Main St of that borough is located on Roosevelt Island. ( RI is considered part of Manhattan). Thanks for this video and keep up your labor of love.
Great views of East side of Manhattan
Great video. I agree about the Subway. There is no other small like the very strange smell that comes out of a Subway.
As two Aussies now in lockdown in Australia, we loved our year living on Roosevelt Is back in 2004. Our 13th storey corner apartment had views of Manhattan, inc Chrysler building, Mayor residence, the local pool and soccer field plus to the north of Manhattan. We intended be back visiting this week but can’t leave Australia. Thanks for your update. It was wonderful.
One year later and Australia/New Zealand are still locked down! Zero covid is a myth, and you really need to dump your abusive respective governments and get on with life. I have lived on Roosevelt Island for almost 40 years. It's only gotten better IMO. And I never locked down, even in March/April 2020. I took my bike and went for coffee outdoors every weekend, and drove and shopped in the suburbs every weekend. No more lockdowns.
Loved Roosevelt Island, I visited a few years ago and it was super exciting!
Spasiba Dima
The F train also stops there too...
I had a friend who lived on the island..
We had lots of great parties there. Then stroll along
the waterfront.. We always called the Con Ed power plant.
The Battersea. The stacks reminded us of the album cover art
from Pink Floyd's "ANIMALS" album..😊😊👌
We went there in 2013 for the first time when I was over for my wedding and we had 2 weeks to wander around the City. I recommend it in any NYC Fourm to anyone looking something different to do or see in Manhattan. My other cool recommendation is Newport NJ with great views of Lower Manhattan.
Newport's pretty unknown to most (I think you mean Newport station/Jersey City).
@@HereBeBarr we stayed in Newport twice at the Hollan Hotel on Marin BLVD just at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel. We had to go through the Newport Mall to get to the Path Train. There's a lovely marina, lighthouse and a colour changing fountain. Or get off at Exchange Place and walk up the river to Newport.
@@heresdarren666 that's not Newport nj , that's jersey city
Newport is an area in Jersey City and is on the map as Newport.
Used to ride bikes out to Roosevelt Island from LIC. It’s a terrific place to bicycle with so much space and the magnificent views! One of my favorite places in NYC.
Yes, great bike spot. I passed some Citi Bike stations as well.
I love all of your videos. I am from Canada and have been craving to come to New-York to visit friends. I used to come down every summer for almost a week to Brooklyn Heights. I love visiting Manhattan. I am from Montreal but New York feels like a home to me.
Love that shirt!!! 🧜🏼♀️
I did do it on my only trip to NYC last year. It's got great fall colors in Freedom park, you can see the Pepsi-Cola sign in Queens, tram ride is good and less populated than Manhattan ofcourse. I missed out the lighthouse, so thanks for showing that in your video.
I just had a BBQ behind the octagon on Wednesday! Love it out there :)
I go every year to New York for my birthday hopefully this year I can. But for now I enjoy your videos
I bet Roosevelt Island doesn't make many peoples' to-do lists when they visit but I agree that those views are 💯
Thanks. I saw you on Yellow Productions live show, he sent me yours as a sample. I'll be on his stream soon.
@@HereBeBarr Good stuff, Jon. The Yellow Productions live viewers kept requesting you as a guest so it will be a good show. Hopefully I'll be able to tune in live.
Great video. The East River itself is fun to watch because it flows in either direction depending on the tides. In fact, it's not a river at all but rather a tidal estuary. Also there used to be a trolley stop in the middle of the Queensboro bridge. Passengers would then take an elevator down to street level.
I just learned some new things
The Sun City of America 🇺🇸
Can't wait to get back to NYC... we had to cancel our vacation we had planned for July... my heart is longing...we will now check our the island on our next trip...
There was a movie named Nighthawks that had some memorable scenes that took place on the Roosevelt Island Tram. It came out in 81 I was a kid. After that I saw that movie I had to take a trip on the tram. I grew up on Ave A so it was not too far. I had a classmate who lived there and I went there for a birthday party Those older 70's buildings were really nice inside and there were lots of parks. Thanks for the Video Barr, brings back good memories.
Just watched the movie Nighthawks for the first time during the very beginning of quarantine, such a gem of a movie!
@@erigeeka I have not seen it in a long time. What medium did you watch it in? I really want to see it again.
@@whackamolechamp We watched it for free but can't remember which of the three it was through: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon.
@@erigeeka ok, thanks.
No way! I was there on Labor Day too - first visit to Roosevelt Island. Definitely want to go back!
It's been aaaages since I last visited Roosevelt Island.... Like since my first trip to NY 5 years ago lol. Often seen it out the window from The Local NYC Hostel in Long Island City
My first time in NYC went there, did not regret. Closest to being in the city without being in the city :D
I’m also surprised to see a bus in such a small island
I'm coming to visit NYC for the first time on the 29th. Planning to move there for a few months at the end of June to explore. So excited to visit!
you come just as indoor dining reopens
@@alexalxatallah will there be shows going on like comedy shows and things allowed to start to go on again? I would love to see some!
Emily Lauren sadly no
Make sure you quarantine. NYC is doing well with COVID. We don’t need an uptick.
nice thanks
OH MAN I MISS IT SO MUCH!!!
Been living here for 3 years and I can't see myself living anywhere outside R.I. in NYC. It's simply the best place to live/work/unwind and great for families!!
Yes I can imagine
New York is a city that I want to see soon.
Now that you have a Patreon acct do a live vlog so people can have a dialog or ask you questions on your city vlog experience. Looks like 11:00am is good for the world at large. If most of your eyes are in the US or Canada you might try early evening. You might try a few times. Tiffany Poon, who recently performed for Dream Stage here has been doing concerts during quarantine at 11 on Saturdays but she performs all over the world so has a big following in Asia and Europe. She is a Steinway Influencer. She did a vlog from Steinway’s vault which was interesting.
Funny enough, every time I go to Roosevelt Island I walk either on Main street or by the water on the Queens side, passing by the ex hospital. The walk by the river on the Manhattan side looks very enjoyable, but in 3-4 times I've been to the Island I've never walked it. I guess because my main interest has always been seeing how people live in an island so close to Manhattan and yet so isolated.
I liked this chill vlog Jon, a nice alternative to your more structured neighborhood guides.
Yes, this vlog is very different than my other ones. Ha, it's funny we had reverse experiences.
I went to nyc for the first time last week and went to Roosevelt island. Idk how but I started talking to an elderly lady and she asked why I was there I told her it was cause I watched “here be barr “ vid. We ended up watching a few videos of yours while waiting for the tram. Wonder if she’ll see this lol.
Gee thanks haha.
I lived in Nyc all my life. Still here now as I type this. I never do any of this 😭
Awesome vid!
Never too late to start.
