Hello hello hello! it's been a while since i made my last cheap eats video and in this one, I really wanted to focus on all the amazing tasty eats you can find in Sydney's Chinatown.
The last two years have been really difficult on the hospitality industry, and Chinatowns around the world has been hit especially hard. When I first moved to Sydney as a kid, there definitely weren't as many Chinese restaurant options as we have today - and Chinatown was a go to place for a lot of our family gatherings, whether it be yum cha, or a quick bite at a cha chaan teng, or family dinners at a Chinese restaurant with the big round tables and the the glass spinning thingy in the middle of the table.
I can't believe I've never made a video on Chinatown - so here's one to start. One video will never be enough to showcase Sydney's Chinatown so hopefully this is one of many! many places i featured in this video, i've been to many times. Hopefully this inspires you go go visit Chinatown next time you're in the city and is feeling a bit hungry.
Places i visited in this video:
1. Mother Chu's Taiwanese Gourmet
Address: 1/84-88 Dixon St, Sydney
2. Nanjing Dumplings
Address: 6 Little Hay St, Haymarket
3. Mr Chen Beef Noodle
Address: Prince Centre TG5 Quay Street Enter via, 8 Thomas St, Haymarket NSW 2000
4. Cho Dumpling King
Address: Shop TG6, 8 Quay St, Haymarket
5. Mrs Chan's Kitchen
635 George St, Haymarket
6. Xi'an Cuisine
4/90 Hay St, Haymarket
7. Emperor's Garden Restaurant
96-100 Hay St, Haymarket
10 TASTY CHEAP EATS under $10 AUD in SYDNEY CHINATOWN! Sydney Food Vlog 2021
Chinatown, every ABC BBC CBC and whatever other combination of letter's childhood memories for sure! Looks like you grew up with some great options, there was like one dim sum place, one baker and one grocer where I was. Yup, 3 stores was my Chinatown hahaha
haha well if i can get me some siu mai, a sausage bun and a malt vitasoy i'd be pretty stoked
*Apologies for the audio, I’m working on adding subtitles for the video!
What's the cheapest, most tasty thing you've had in Chinatown, regardless of the city???
Also! correction on the address of Mother Chu's Taiwanese Gourmet - it's shouldve been 1/84-88 Dixon St, Sydney
Crispy Pork with rice in Penang, Malaysia. Just under $2 AUD
Hey I didn’t think you’d realise your mic wasn’t on right at the beginning, lol 😂
Thought it was me. Sounds like you’ve got mic issues. It cuts out again after a minuet or so. Hope you get it fixed
I think it was satay in KL. Does that count? It was like a few cents a skewer
Street food in the Philippines. 20c/stick of charcoal grilled goodness. Tasty as.
I didn’t think the audio was so bad besides that great video 😀
Thank you for this Janice! and for your other videos about Sydney. Cant wait to be there next week
So sad that Sydney Chinatown took such a hit during lockdown. I hope people come back and support the little eateries! It is such a fave for our family. Thanks Janice for shining a light on this! 😍
Do you have any that you really enjoy? Would love some recommendations!
Love the places you choose Janice and your smile :) Keep uploading them vlogs. Take care and be safe.
Thank you! Take care
Another great video Janice! It's great to find out about all these Chinese dishes. I live near Melbourne's China Town and you're right they have had a tough time. Good to see them coming back to life. Keep up the good work Janice! :)
thank you! ahh i had some really delicious dumplings and soy chicken rice last time i was at Melb Chinatown.. good times !
Thanks! China Town is my favourite part of the city 🥰 I'll be staying down there in a few weeks and can't wait!
So satisfying watching your videos always! 🤩👍🏻👍🏻
thank you for watching!
Omg its been such a long time since I've been to sydney, cant wait to go back and try all these foods!!! ~
They are special location
Delicious tasty food that u had in Chinatown. The thai boat noodle looks yummy, good choice for winter, as well as the xi an bun, and meat bun..can't wait to see more of the chinatown food :)
Yes the boat noodles is great as a light lunch !
Happy to watch another upload :)
thank you!
Janice your skin is Flawless!! 🤩
Great video. Going to Sydney in August. Can't wait to check out these places. Thank you!
Everything look so good!!
Omg Emperor's Cream Puffs is such a throwback to childhood. Haven't been to Chinatown in ages, are the night markets still going on I wonder?
Yea they are! I was in the city on a Friday recently and saw they had stalls up
What a great idea to feature Chinatown in your video ☺️👍🏽 I’m so glad many of those places have managed to survive Covid. Spent a lot of my childhood going to Marigold, so was sad to hear they’re closing 🙁 Eddy and I used to go to Campbell’s cha chaan teng (HK style cafe), but they closed years ago 🙁 we LOVE the pork floss rice roll at Mother Chu’s! The boat noodle place is great too 👍🏽 Keep up the good work and stay safe. We always look forward to your videos ☺️
thank you guys! yeah we went to Marigold a lot for yumcha too :( where was campbell's cha chaan teng?
It was on Sussex Street YEARS ago. Then they closed for a while and reopened on Hay St in Haymarket. It was on the first floor overlooking the light rail. Think they closed for good around 2015 🙁
This was such a great video👌 Janice & I love all the different places you went to .I love dumpling 🥟 The foods is yummy and cheap ..I love the emperor puffs I always get them too hehe ..Please do some more on China town ..❤️🥰..x
i definitely will do! thank you for watching :)
Your videos are so fun to watch and always makes me hungry!
Thank you Irene!
everything look so good! yum yum yum!
I love chinatown because I really enjoy eating Asian food, glad your making this video.
Omg!!! It's been so long since I went to Sydney. Adding all these to my bucket list 🥰 esp since borders are open now!
I can’t wait till January when I get there x
Great video Janice bought back many great memories of the special time I lived in Chinatown in the mid-late 90’s… so many great places so much great food. Living in Brisbane since 2015 and there’s nothing here like Asian food in Sydney. Craving great Chinese food for dinner right now and and your video pops up. Sadly nowhere near us with anything authentic of decent. Your video helps fill the void 🧡
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
are there many Asian grocery stores up in Brisbane?
Seeing the colour of that soup broth at Mrs Chan's you just know it's going to taste fantastic.
mmmmhm it was good
Great video Janice, I always think of China Town as a bit of a tourist trap but there is some good cheap eats.
There are definitely some great cheap eats
Great to be out of lockdown and back to dining in again!
Yes 100%!
夜晚睇好肚餓😩
Love your video! I was so sad when Mother Chu went into renovation for like ever. I haven’t been able to get a pork floss roll for like over a year and a half. Now the borders are open I’m going back to Sydney.
give them a visit next time youre in town!
Thank you for sharing your video 👍💙
I love chinatown for the healthy late night meals and visit as often as I can
where do you go for your late night meals?
Nice finds Janice 🤩
*Pauses video on menus to look for vegetarian options* cannot wait to get back to this part of the woods. I have flights back to Sydney in exactly 1 month (in 2 days) I would love to see you!
yesss! there are so many places you'd like Delia!!!!
true, 1 video is hard to show all the awesomeness of Chinatown. hahah emperors garden puffs slapz hard, love em.
yeah i wish i got the box of 15 instead of 7 lol
Hey Janice, been to Marigold's a few times, maybe you could do a video on it before it closes. It's been a Sydney Icon and certainly when one speaks of Chinatown Yum Cha, most would just associate that with Marigold's. Shame it's closing. Thank you for the Video. Excellent and will be trying some of the Restaurants out.
Very interesting video! Appreciate the info on cuisine in your country! Was this a food coma video?
it was 100% a food coma video haha. i had quite a bit of left overs for the next few days too
I’m 2 days late:( but I hope you’re doing amazing as always Janice:)💙
hope youre doing wel!
I was sort of expecting you to drop an f bomb out of frustration at the end of the video. I think the salt and pepper tofu would have to be my pick of the bunch! Keep up the great content Janice, regardless of sound issues...
ah the salt and pepper tofu was really good - they use a type of tofu that's super silky and smooth. i can eat it as a starter or mains w/ rice
thank you for watching Brendan!
When I lived in Sydney.. I loved eating in China town.. there was a food court up the top end I used to go and could eat under $10
Early squad !!
Hiiiiiii! 👋
💜💜💜👍👍👍 something sweet😂😂😂😂....we just coming into winter in the UK....can't wait to cook my winter Warmer's👍👍💜💜
I can listen to her on a podcast without seeing the video and still get hungry😂😂😂
Omg lol 😂
I should not watch your videos before I go sleep. Now I am craving for dumplings and I won't be able to fall asleep!
The most tasty thing I got was a beef soup in a small village in Taiwan but not sure it will qualify as a chinatown! Otherwise, I ate an incredible fish hot pot cook in oil with pig ears and noodles in a Szechuan style restaurent in Vancouver.
Spot on with finishing with Emperor's Puffs. Would love to see you do the rounds of Spice Alley up across the road from the University.
yess i think it's time for a video on Spice Alley
lol, the joy of living in a small community in the middle of Kansas... you're making me hungry and I can't enjoy those amazing looking foods. But I do have access to amazing Bulgogi and a variety of Kimchi's (cucumber my favorite). So, I'll make due with my Bulgogi restaurants and HuHot restaurants. :)
I'll now know where to buy lunch and dinner, next time I'm in Sydney. In Wellington New Zealand, the average person spends NZ$20 on lunch or dinner. Meals in the big cities of your countries are expensive. But there's always places which are cheap in your city.
Yeah 20 bucks for lunch or dinner is pretty standard here in Sydney too actually
More China town videos please ! This help people like me who don’t speak Chinese 😅 thank you !
i feel like you'r'e the best buddy to go eat with :)
Nice video mate 👍👏
thank you!
Hi Janice you must share how you can eat so much food in one day and yet you can still be so fit! I am jealous…
It must be nice looking at her all day
Great video
Thank you!
Gumshara next? Do a ramen review mukbang!!!! ;-)
ahh a part 2 to my first ramen video. where are your goto ramen places?
Translation for those wanting to buy “Chinese Vinegar is “Chinkiang Vinegar “ or also know as black Vinegar , available at all Asian Grocery like “Tong Li” but also now Coles and Woolworths
cheap eat i discovered yesterday: $5 for 5 @ 2peck Cabramatta. Considering kfc is doing 10 for 10 wings, 2 peck takes the crown.
Ooooo nice!
Also, I didn’t know kfc did 10 wicked wings for 10 bucks?!
Eastwood Eats video is a must cross the train line compare Chinese to Korean cheap eats, I can’t help but eat both there haha
Fingers crossed we'll open up again in the next year so you can come on over to Perth.
I think there's a lot of places here you'd dig.
My fingers are crossed ! What places in Perth would you recommend ?
@@JaniceFung well the holy trinity of good eating spots are Northbridge, Morley and East Victoria Park, but as with all cities there's so many hidden gems.
@@JaniceFung just thought of two specific things to do on a weekend (best day for the atmosphere, even though they're crowded)
Coventry Markets in Morley and Spensor Village food court in Thornlie.
Both feel like transplants from Asia.
Lovely Dear .. I miss Melbourne..
I am an Australian citizen here Xie Xie ni
Miss my dumping and chilli sauce... dumpling noodle veg chicken stock soup..
Chinese food in Aussie 😍
I live in Sydney but I hardly ever had Chinese food looking forward to it though in future
We are from the U.K love going to China Town in Sydney when we visit family in Australia. Thanks for sharing 👍 🎄 🎄
thank you for watching!
Thanks:)
The foods look amazing. Can you buy the Beijing meat pie in Sydney? I think its called Xian Bing
yeah i think so! i think we have some in Burwood and Eastwood
Wish someone would do this in China town Melbourne..I’d love to know the best places to go down here
i'll keep this in mind next time i visit Melbourne Sally!
Hi, we used to visit Chinatown regularly before covid, particularly the wonton noodle house down in the dixon house arcade, does anyone know what happened to it, and if it still exists anywhere? Tia
And here I thought that Singapore food is expensive. You proved me wrong 😂
🥲
good video beautiful sydney
thanks Joseph!
Janice, please go harris park and do a food tour. I was so intimidated to order just like a gwei lo would at yum cha. pls halp.
I’ve actually done one a year ago! But I’ll add to my list for a refreshed one soon!
👌👌👌
Authentic boat noodles, from what I understand, usually has either pork or beef blood. Is that what gave the boat noodles the colour?
We are going to Sydney soon. Can you tell me where I can buy huge .,the size of a hand crab claws. Cost not important,i just want to have some served to us.the Langham we are booked into already but we oy get a small crayfish each. Hoping you can help us find a nice resturant who serves them. Thanks
It broke my heart Dixon house Chinese closed down they had some of the best Asian food downstairs. The upstairs eateries just don’t compare.
I love mushrooms in my eggs and pork
I would be interested in chinatown places where i can bring my vegetarian friends along. Are there any in Sydney?
Bun King Campsie is the best for meat bun
You’re so cute🥺
Hey Janice, you need to fix up your audio at the beginning of the video.
Thanks for the feedback I’m working on getting subtitles added!
Is the ramen place in "Eating World" still open?
Gumshara?
@@JaniceFung I think so? I can't remember the name. Little Japanese ramen place in the corner with the best soup. I used to go there frequently when working nearby.
Hi Janice 👋🏻
hello!
ch dumpling king ison the list!
Loveeee cho dumpling king
This best in Chinatown since 2000.
Is Cantonese or Mandarin more widely spoken in Sydney?
Mother is big No, try few thing there dumpling or thing she recommends very dry and nice. Opposite store to mother chu is nicer. Boat noddle Thai restaurant yes very nice.
Did u really eat that much in a day?
Is it just me but music drowns out your audio
yeah the audio on this one is off, at times sounds like stereo sound coming through only one side...
what’s up with the audio?
Is anyone struggling to hear??
Cant even hear any of the voice overin the first 2.5 mins
Very bad audio
This is not the video to watch 2 hours into your 18 hour fast.....
Hi Janice, no offence, but I think you need a hair treatment
Do you know how hard it is to get a hair appointment after lockdown Derek
You look fine, Janice ☺️
Hey Derek, no offence, but I think you were dropped on your head as a baby and you still need treatment.
@@lordwhis1630 settle down mate would ya 🙄
Her hair is fluffy and looks good.
